veggieburrito··on Hobbyists who collect barf bags
Great article to come across on a friday afternoon, the first paragraph is a great hook and had me laughing too.

Was waiting at a drive through coffee recently with the dog in the front seat. She needed to vomit right as I was about to pull up to the window. Just happened to find a small paper bag from lunch, or something, and was able to get everything cleanly in the bag! A dog snout fits more cleanly into a bag than human I think, but have never needed to use one myself.

veggieburrito··on Vice website is shutting down
Honest, technical, humorous; Good comment!
veggieburrito··on Aim, fire, scan: the 80/20 of executing on big projects
Am in between house rentals at the moment and the general concept of “commitment agreements” is one that’s been on my mind. Particularly the desire to pay 6 or X months up front for a place - maybe it exists in the commercial space but haven’t seen it for general residential agreements.

Some cool points made in this article thanks for sharing. It’s a bit broad and formulaic to be directly actionable in my opinion but that can be seen as good/bad depending on the reader

veggieburrito··on In 2023 Organic Maps got its first million users
Weird and random to see the hotspring marked on the map. Have been there many times but it was all word of mouth
veggieburrito··on San Francisco’s rent prices have never returned to pre-2020 levels
The Bay Area is large and the Greater Bay is massive if you take into account people commute in from Sac, Santa Rosa, and Santa Cruz to name a few.
veggieburrito··on TikTok Brings War Home to Your Child
It can be something relevant to seek out but wouldn't use the word desirable at all. It may improve judgement but hopefully serves better to improve humility and gratitude.
veggieburrito··on The pork industry’s forced cannibalism
It’d be interesting to read more about the psychology of “when people decide to stop eating meat”. Conversely, I’ve talked with individuals who were raised culturally vegetarian who started eating meat as an adult.

Interesting topics all around.

veggieburrito··on Big Tech as the New Big Tobacco
Yeah the non specificity irks me as a lifelong builder and engineer. I mean, welding and the cotton gin are tech if you want to frame it that way.
veggieburrito··on Momofuku Ando invented instant ramen (2016)
Contrary to the sibling comment I think it’s the salt. There was also the guy who ate the ramen in styrofoam bowl for years and had a lump of styrofoam in his stomach.

Personally I just buy dry ramen noodles and make my own sauce or use curry, give a bit more control over salt etc

veggieburrito··on Vantem constructs modular, factory-built homes using ceramics
This is cool but I don’t really like how their material is under a trade secret. I’m sure it’s good under their testing but there are tangible differences between things like lumber/metal/composite grades. What would it mean for something like code compliance/liability etc
veggieburrito··on Backend of Meta Threads is built with Python 3.10
More guarantees like how? Genuinely curious. I’ve been working with Nest.js lately and it’s good but rails is still more plug and play in my opinion.
veggieburrito··on Carmakers don’t need ‘EV divisions,’ the whole company should go electric now
I agree the used vehicle market is robust but the rest of your comment communicates extreme negativity. Will leave it at that.
veggieburrito··on Carmakers don’t need ‘EV divisions,’ the whole company should go electric now
This is such an understated point, especially on HN! EVs can be great for certain use cases and individuals but, as as renter, do not fit my situation at all.
veggieburrito··on Ask HN: Engineers where do you find jobs?
In theory: apply online or through recruiter connection

In practice: referrals from people I know

veggieburrito··on The interesting engineering behind your Car Window [video]
This was super cool thanks for the post. It's interesting how the pulley system is the improved method while this is the 'old' system for a lot of residential windows - but does work very smoothly. Have had a rope snap before with the window up before and shatter the pane.
veggieburrito··on California strikes deal with engine makers on zero-emissions trucking by 2036
For sure companies and people will take the path of least resistance; companies will always prioritize the bottom-line. It seems most consumers are tipped toward EVs because of the incentives and things like carpool lane waivers.

EVs are a tremendous improvement in regards to emissions but in my opinion a step backwards in terms of functionality (hear me out on this one!). ICE are one of the greatest inventions of our species and the energy density of liquid fuels is so much greater than in a battery - with this comes field portability and long-term usage of trucks/heavy-equipment etc. Certainly EVs have other advantages such as torque bands, fewer moving parts, etc.

In short I agree with your points

veggieburrito··on Backend of Meta Threads is built with Python 3.10
Respectfully disagree about not starting new Ruby projects now - can we still be friends? It works and is easy to get started for simple stuff, same with PHP for some folks or Django etc.
veggieburrito··on Grumpy Locals Are Sabotaging Cruise and Waymo Robotaxis with Traffic Cones
does seattle even still offer bike rentals for this? for some reason feel like i only see scooters around... in the middle of the sidewalk or in some bush
veggieburrito··on OceanGate CEO Told Videographer to Sleep on the Titan Sub After the Battery Died
Don’t have a source handy but have read the tethering is possible but required more specialized and expensive ships. When the tethers /are/ used I found it interesting the whole reel is welded onto the ship’s deck
veggieburrito··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
My personal website isn’t something I’m proud of from a design or code perspective and most others are usually much better. But if it ain’t broke…

Currently working on uploading and mixing/mastering other guitar ditties

https://www.lifeonthereg.com

Edit: always finding bugs when viewing it too haha oh well

veggieburrito··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
It’s polished and works well on mobile. The graphics are cool, we’re they made by you?

I think the most sustainable writing schedule is whenever you feel like it!

veggieburrito··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2023)
Interesting point, was not familiar with the Org mentioned above. But am tangentially familiar with HHMI and Janelia research campus. Time to go read up on Howard Hughes
veggieburrito··on A Dutch Village Where Everyone Has Dementia (2014)
Interesting to hear someone articulate this dynamic. I do not believe my father has dementia but there are similarities in regards to “repeat of the same conversations”.

Wish you and your family well.

veggieburrito··on How Long EV Batteries Last
This is such a surface level article it's barely informative but did not know the Nissan Leaf is air cooled - not quite sure what that means though compared to other vehicles.

The "miles" the battery lasts makes sense to me but I'm curious about "time" the battery lasts while dormant etc.

veggieburrito··on The Many Lives of the Medieval Wound Man (2016)
This is super interesting for the historical medical context and portrayal of anatomy. It's certainly more than a bit gruesome - the "neoclassical nude" is interesting as well - particularly the extreme musculature but modest size of reproductive organ. The depiction of scale is par for the course but made me think of "pectoral size" in body builders throughout the years. Modern body builders focus on the chest but maybe 100 years ago less so - I've read these were just aesthetics of the times. Was moving a piece of furniture a couple months ago and got an awkward wood sliver that I ended up leaving in since it was near impossible to remove - couldn't imagine needing to deal with broken shaft arrows jeez... how far we've come as a species for better or worse
veggieburrito··on Ask HN: Learning the technology/tool/stack that you don't like
Isn’t ga4 going to be the dominant tracking method used in the future? Not sure about a depreciation schedule or timeline - guess what I’m getting at is it’s easiest to learn a tool if it’s the only option or if one is desperate. Or if they’re being paid to do so
veggieburrito··on Ask HN: Will HN survive Reddit imploding?
Agreed. Seems folks on HN lose track of their biases - like all people.
veggieburrito··on Ask HN: Do you think the future of social media looks like Discord/Reddit?
Thanks for mentioning, hadn’t really pinpointed it but this has been my impression as well. “Like and subscribe”
veggieburrito··on Traders Do Less Crime at Home
