veganarchocap··on Late Capitalism and the Ends of Sleep
So the market is an 'invisible hand' but any other form of centralised planning, that you yourself can't name or suggest isn't?
veganarchocap··on Late Capitalism and the Ends of Sleep
How can Capitalism have 'ran its course'? It was never on course. Even in the most economically 'free' parts of the world... interest rates are still set by a central government, people are still taxed, imports and exports are still subject to tariffs, and markets are regulated and swung in favour of the central state. All of which are distinctly anti-capitalist. There are no Capitalist nations, not truly.
veganarchocap··on Late Capitalism and the Ends of Sleep
The fact that you're referring to 'capitalism' in context of the present day, indicates to me that you have misunderstood Capitalism, with all due respect.

There is no 'damning and well-supported' case against Capitalism, if there is then I'm yet to find it (and believe me I've been looking). There is however a damning well-supported case against what many wrongly refer to as Capitalism i.e Corporatism.

There is absolutely no 'mysticism' to the market, it's very quantifiable. Theory of subjective value, marginal utility, subjectivism, individualism etc. The likes of Menger, Rothbard, Mises, Hayek, Spooner and co have written hundreds of thousands of pages detailing every last aspect of human/value interaction. But the core tenets are pretty simple. Certainly no mysticism or ambiguity.

veganarchocap··on Late Capitalism and the Ends of Sleep
Well for a start, by definition we don't have Capitalism, so any article referring to 'current day Capitalism' has missed what Capitalism in its true essence is about. The simple act of free trade, property rights and self-ownership is what Capitalism is. What people refer to now as Capitalism, is in fact Corporatism, which of course has its own set of deeply serious problems.

The trouble with everyone bashing 'Capitalism' now is that people draw a false parallel between 'Capitalism' and 'Corporatism' and run a mile in the opposite direction and adopt quite predictable Marxist views.

If we're going to get into Marxism, this was a man who never had a real job... he mooched off of his factory owning friends (so a complete hypocrite) and took advantage of a maid working in his families service and brought about a child of whom he never cared for. He isn't a good role model, and couldn't even live by his own views.

veganarchocap··on Ask HN: What do you do when your entire being opposes the task at hand?
Amazing answer, that last paragraph about feeling bad about yourself is exactly how I've felt. I've been working in agencies where you've been producing other peoples ideas and dreams but haven't been working towards anything I truly care about or believe in.

When I worked in-house, I was massively productive, agencies I've just fizzled out and now feel that boredom and malaise. I've been offered an amazing in-house opportunity that I've been ignoring for a while now, I think this has spurred me to a decision. Thanks again!

veganarchocap··on Ask HN: What do you do when your entire being opposes the task at hand?
Currently fighting that same problem, I'm more of a programmer, but I'm being placed on really, really fiddly UI 'features'.

I've made about 10 cups of tea, gone to the toilet about 6 times, read every tweet tweeted in the past 24 hours. Started three arguments, considered quitting and storming out... it's horrible and I'm glad you posted this because I've been going through exactly the same thing.

Where's Derby County's stats?! Just kidding this looks great!
veganarchocap··on Ketamine 'exciting' depression therapy
I'm glad you think so! I was making a light-hearted observation and I'm actually 100% in favour of legalising and exploring the potentials of some of these substances for people with severe mental health problems. Mental health problems affect my family deeply and don't think any stone should be left unturned. It's just a shame everyone seemed to jump at me assuming I was criticising it somehow!
veganarchocap··on Ketamine 'exciting' depression therapy
You're an idiot, I wasn't making a moronic criticism, I happen to be 100% anti-drug prohibition, but yet again on Hacker News, I've been massively down-voted and insulted for making a joke.
veganarchocap··on Ketamine 'exciting' depression therapy
Well, on a drug where you've forgotten the difference between up and down and are now convinced you're able to walk through solid objects, I'm pretty sure you'd forget about being depressed...

I can absolutely second this, I read his smoking book and quit immediately after I put it down, laughing all the way... it really is the winning formula for addiction!
veganarchocap··on You are a Marxist – but don't worry
Yeah I was kinda trolling to be fair!
veganarchocap··on You are a Marxist – but don't worry
No I'm not, I was making a joke. Though no, I don't agree with Marxism.
veganarchocap··on Project Cybersyn (1971)
Millions wasted on expensive systems and software to manage and negate the damage caused by an inherently inefficient method of running an economy. One size does not fit all, no matter how much state software you create to make it so.

If you combine this level of technology at a micro level, combined with the incomparable efficiency of the market, THAT is when you start to see incredible things starting to happen.

From small businesses monitoring their sales and orders in real-time, sharing their data with their marketing agency via api's. To construction companies using internet of things to monitor structural wear to alert them of replacements needed. It's at this market oriented macro-level that you will see the greatest advantages.

Creating and making the technology to power that is most important. And that's where we come in!

I felt slightly sick when I read that title.

I didn't feel that comfortable about having a bookmark called 'Squirt' in my bookmark bar, so I've renamed it. I was hoping someone would release this though since I saw the app version.

God damn that's addictive, final score: 3040 about an hour wasted at work :P Great concept though, love it.

Having been someone who hasn't really had the money, time or interest to invest in bitcoins, this submission doesn't make a great deal of sense to me; despite one particular angry sweary guy shouting at everyone claiming it 'should be obvious'. But I'm not angry that I don't understand it, or am not interested in it, we're spoilt for choice with great content on hacker news, so this doesn't mean much to me personally, who cares? I'll read something else, or maybe it might inspire me to give a little more time to look in to BitCoin. I can see that already that's a large amount of money being processed, that in an of itself sparks some sense of curiosity.

veganarchocap··on LSD, Reconsidered for Therapy
They should reconsider MDMA for therapy as well, there was no good reason to ban it, and it was working well for people with post traumatic stress syndrome, people with terminal illnesses etc.

veganarchocap··on Ask HN: What Linux distro do you use for work, and why?
Elementary OS, just because it's Debian/Ubuntu based so it's nice and easy to use, but it's also fairly light-weight. I think because it's quite a nice looking distro as well, it just makes work a bit more of a pleasure. I feel sorry for the others still using Windows 7!

veganarchocap··on Let banks fail: Iceland’s plan looks to be working
Iceland were spot on in letting the market decide the fate of the banks. Here in the UK we claim banks have too much power and point the finger at 'Capitalism'. But Brown bailed out our banks with tax money which artificially empowered and allowed for risks.
veganarchocap··on A US judge rules Samsung 'infringed' Apple's auto-complete text patent
More mindless industry stifling courtesy of Apple. They're going around suing everyone because they know they're in decline, because they're running out of their own good ideas.

Like a dying star, they're violently trying to implode everything around it.
