Find me as Vega Deftwing on most sites
OwO
I also love https://lyra.horse/arrupted/ I've made some pretty cool pieces with it in the past, so it was really cool to see a domain I recognize on the front page today!
It's as if we have the cure for cancer, but we only give it to people that are willing to watch 1 hour of ads every day. Like, yeah, the technology is great, but that social implication is terrifying.
To me, a book strictly about the wonder - ignoring these realities - feels.. vapid? dishonest? I don't want a word quite so loaded, but I'm struggling to find a better one.
This does hit home for me though. I'm currently working on a re-write of my pages on this subject on my website [0], where the current public version there really is overly complain-y and really misses the mark. The new version I'm working on explicitly alternates between negatives and positives, with sections that alternate between dark with light text and light with dark text to indicate the shift in tone and as much as I think that's beneficial for a reader, it's even more so for me as the author, to recognize when I'm writing too much in the "dark" section.
At the same time, I don't want to fall into the fallacy of moderation. If one side says climate change isn't real and one side does, it's not as if truth is somewhere in the middle. It's real. It's bad. Same for anything about computers. If I say right to repair, the DMCA, enshitification, etc. etc. are huge problems and pretend we're doing enough to fix them, that's just as dishonest.
Writing this has convinced me to pick up OP's book and read it, if for no other reason than to be inspired by the meta, the framing that I'm talking about - though I'm sure it'll be a good read in its own right. (Even if my prior, top-level comment about being unsure of the meat still holds)
The TL;DR: Arch gets harder year over year as the number of ways to setup/options for each piece of your system grows. Hell, even picking a bootloader among 10 options is confusing. A guide that just at least says "This is common for X, this for Y, the others are interesting and may be worth trying. If you don't want to investigate now, use X" Is DESPRATELY needed.
I tried to have that on my site, and a pretty high level arch forum admin came buy and told me to delete my website and made a PR just deleting the page. It was honestly one of the most rude and hateful interactions I've ever had online.
It does mostly matter for noise though, yeah.
Also, active guitars largely get around these problems, as do low-impedance pickups.
I find it weird that people chase all these different pickups and sounds instead of just getting a modern, active, flat-response pickup (See Cycfi's Nu & Spectra series) and EQing and compressing to the response they want.
Some moron at Microsoft decided that if your password is serving its purpose and people aren't able to get in but that there are a bunch of attempts that you should need to reset your password. Because of this, I have to reset my password. Every. Time. I. Want. To. Play.
But that means multiple 2FA codes to both my non-mirosoft account email and to my phone. All in all, it usually takes about 7 or 8 minutes each time I want to play, which is an ABSURD amount of friction for an account I don't want to be using to play the game anyway, given when I bought it it was a Mojang account without all the associated, creepy TOS changes.
Don't be afraid to look around for ways to play without a legitimate account if you've paid. If that's the better experience, it is what it is.
Not taking VC funding, having slow organic growth, making a good product, and having pride in your work?
Like, maybe I'm missing something, but why does the end goal always have to be VC funding and acquisition? Is it too much to ask to stay independent and just make something you take pride in and enjoy the craft over many years of a successful, but not self-canibalizing, business?
I dunno man, I just keep seeing every smaller business's end goal to be acquired or turn into a money pumping SASS and it's just depressing. Lets make good things, enjoy delivering a product that people like, and spread good. Keep you and, if you have employees, making a good living and be happy?
I, personally, find that actually more understandable (as someone that isn't in the group) than I do, say, most religions and their belief in a higher power. That's not to in an attempt to offend or belittle either group (or the overlap, religious Therians), just a view from my particular perspective where it's really no more strange than anything else people do. If it makes them happy, lets them connect with others, etc. who am I to judge?
There are, of course, outliers that literally believe themselves to be shapeshifters or whatever, but, okay? As long as its not impacting their day-to-day too much, many of them are still probably mentally more healthy than a lot of other people.
He got pissed off at me for questioning his authority, I told the class "Uh, guys, why don't we all wait until [GTA's name] and I talk this out to proceeded, unless ya'll want to be replacing fuses in the multimeters" that REALLY pissed him off.
He was yelling. He told me I needed to talk to him in the hallway. I informed him that if I was wrong, this would be a great lesson for the class, and that, no, I will not being going somewhere to be yelled at in private, anything he had to say could be said there. That really did it. He yelled more. I was laughing at his tantrum. He took me up to the lab lead (not the prof overseeing the class - not 100% sure of how this person fit into the the hierarchy), intending to get me kicked out of the class for disrespect. He goes on to this guy about how I'm the worst, and I just stand there, smiling.
Finally, lab lead guy has gotten tired of the second hand yelling, and asks for my side - He wasn't oblivious to the fact that I'm sitting there fiddling with my 12AX7 necklace while leaning on my longboard I burnt with high voltage. I oozed the hardware hacker ethos very visibly - and I respond simply "He told the class to measure impedance, with an ohmmeter, while the circuit was live"
It was at that moment I learned it was this lab lead's role to repair equipment (or at least replace fuses) when things like this happen.
Watching that GTA have to tell the class "I was wrong" after he was yelling at me in front of everyone had to be the best.

Fast forward a year, and I got to deal with even more mind numbing stupidity: https://opguides.info/posts/whydidipay/#8---senior-spring-20
I want, desperately, to be the best steward in providing kindness and assistance to anyone and everyone I can within my means while also living the most fulfilling life I can and sharing my knowledge with others.
If anyone asks me if I'm religious, this is the answer. I've always thought of religion - for the rational, at least - to be a sort of known double-think. A known suspension of belief as a tool. When I need that tool, I think of the egg.
Whenever I think about how cruel someone is being to others, I take some solace in imagining that at some point, they too, will experience their own cruelty. Not in a "they deserve punishment way" but in a "they will understand, someday" way.
This isn't the difference between a cucumber and a grape. It's the difference between a grape, for which you sell most of your time to earn, and the ones who own the means by which those grapes are produced, who have been given better circumstances to own those vinyards by their parents and their parents parents, and their parents parents parents, in which each generation has done atrocious acts to remain in possession of the vineyard and where each vineyard worker is squeezed into getting fewer and fewer grapes (or grapes which are simply worth less, due to an overall higher number of grapes) where the vineyard owners have influenced the policy makers that should be ensuring the power of the vinyard owners isn't so absolute and abusive such that they can keep moving the window to keep paying even less grapes.
Meanwhile, some people are told that, because the vinyard owner doesn't like their identity, they should get no grapes at all.
---
But lets drop the absolutely ridiculous metaphors. It's not grapes. It's not animals. It's money, and power, and lives, and freedom. It's conflicting freedoms, as some wish to be free to impede the freedoms of others.
Let me quote someone else here,
For example Did you know that Amazon workers frequently earn so little that they rely on government top-ups and overtime just to tread water above the poverty line While their CEO Jeff Bezos has so much ducking money that if you count it by one number every second, everyday, without sleep, it would take you over thirty years just to count up to the amount of money he has? Oh no, wait a second, I misread that He actually has one hundred and eighty-five times that amount He has more money than the human mind is capable of imagining More than anyone could ever spend in multiple lifetimes And that's just the money we know about Because remember in 2015 It was headline news across the world A global conspiracy by the financial elite to hide trillions of dollars in unreachable, illegal bank accounts in Panama And what happened there? Oh yeah The journalist who broke the story was assassinated in broad daylight with a ducking car bomb And the story just disappeared
This entire article misses the mark to the point of malice. I find it hard to engage in civil manner with something so belittling of the situation that we all are living though. This posted the day after peaceful protesters in Syria fighting corruption were blasted with sonic weapons. During a take over of the US government by the richest man in the world facing no accountability as he upends the lives of countless government workers just doing their job.
Yeah, I want my damn grapes. I want my fair share of grapes. I want my fair amount of influence in society to ensure I and my fellow people get enough grapes that they can live happy and healthy lives.

EDIT: I should also point out the actual article OP has two startups that use AI. So, as far as understanding and respecting the value of other peoples work goes, I think that says a lot :)
Thomas, I'm not trying to be harsh, but also consider what the point of putting unfinished content into the world is in this way and without being able to edit it as a cohesive document. When I work on my website, I often publish half finished pages, but that's because I welcome contributions. Depending on the article, I do wait until it's done to publish though.
I do think the subject is interesting though, I just would like to see it discussed in full, not a part one that's so brief.
This trains people that do a lot of piracy to be used to turning off their antivirus to let something through, which is fine until it's not. It's like drugs, if we know a subset of the population will do them no matter what, we should make it safe for them to the extent we can. False positives, causing people to ignore actual positives, creates a market for these things.
In my discord groups, telegram chats, etc. they're all focused: Bet it on making music, writing embedded firmware, etc. Things I am interested in. Furthermore, because they're more restricted, I don't have to deal with people that I don't like: If you're an ass, you'll be shown the door. The platform isn't kicking you off in full, you're just not welcome to my particular party.
This does have downsides. It lowers discoverability, for one. I'm not introduced to as many new ideas or hobies I might be into. It means I don't see local events or local used items for sale unless those groups are explicitly local versions of those sub-interests - and for many hobbies, groups like that don't exist.
Weather any of this is good or bad is up to the individual. I think it leans positive, which is why people seem to be preferring it. If anything, I think it's more social as the ANTI-social behavior that made the platforms of yesteryear die off is less prevelant.
TL;DR: No.
I looked into it hook one up to my rack and ultimately decided that even with the high price of euro modules it's still not really sensible/useful for what it includes. There's a lot of more useful modules you can try the same vibe with for euro though.
For analog logic, Maths from Make Noise is the obvious. ANA from Mystic Circuits is pretty neat too.
For digital logic (Combining both types of logic is very fun IMHO) O_c (or uO_c) running hemisphers has a mode to construct complex logic gate changes in the module, which can be fun.
Also, consider that a LPF is effectively an integrator and a HPF a differentiator and you already have 90% of it already, probably.
That said, I suspect they're regressing, like how they removed ultrasonic sensors which are a dime a dozen to only rely on computer vision. That's just plain stupid, IMHO.
For the money, I think you can do much better than a Tesla in many regards, but I'm not about to shame you for reading marketing and believing it either, especially if it was pre the current Musk hell and the general knowledge that he's essentially a fraudster given the perpetual 1 year away for autopilot and what not.
""the IG plans to liaise with regulatory bodies to improve compliance targets""
Regulatory bodies absolutely do not care about W3C. Hell, they barely care about the IETF, IEEE, ICANN, etc.
I'm all for pushing for sustainability, but look at the other interest groups. For example, privacy. Cloudflare just published an article talking about post-quantum crypto [1] where they talk about how wild a percent of traffic would be just cert exchange (and, currently already is). There will always be competing interests, so a body that only exists to checks notes talk about ""sustainability"" on the web feels moot.
They explicitly say hardware is out of scope. Cool. So software. The only way to help sustainability is to use less or make it more efficient. Less never happens, and efficiency isn't a concern above ad revenue for literally anyone.
Honestly, I'm inclined to see this as actively harmful more than anything. Putting out statements about sustainability just dilutes the waters on web issues they might have real pull in, like standards for user privacy that DO help with sustainability. For example, making it easier to choose what content gets delivered cough DNS blackhole adblock cough means less data being transfered.
I still wish this group the best and hope that they can discuss actions of other groups (Such as the Media and Entertainment Interest Group) in context of their choice of standards impact on processing power requirements.
Honestly, reading the manifesto [2] just makes me more angry. It doesn't say anything. Go read some solar-punk manifestos by people on the Indie Web or in Solarpunk culture. Those at least say something. This is just marketing fluff for the sponsors at the bottom of the page.

On the internet as a whole, I do mostly lurk, but I have my own website where I try to post meaningful, useful content. To me, that's enough to have paid my dues. If you never, ever post anything. Yeah, paying is fair, but so long as you contribute back, you've paid, IMHO.
This gets tricky only because the web isn't small anymore. Youtube, for hosting, should probably get a cut, yeah. But the majority? no. The ability to monetize something someone else made and wants to distribute for free? Also no. They, IMHO, abused their way to near monopoly on video distribution, so they shouldn't have that right.
Similarly, I won't pay for content when I'm creating my own and distributing it for free (Actually, to some cost to me) and without ads.
Saying "Well, then only consume other's free content" is a fair rebuttal, but there's a larger social/societal problem that incentives making paid content or using platforms like YouTube which will monetize content made by anyone even if the creator never sees a Penny: The dominance of those platforms has stifled innovation to the point of depriving them of a real choice. (Again, opinion. Don't sue me Google <3)
By using adblock, I'm willfully, intentionally hurting that perverse incentive system.
It's a similar vibe to the idea that piracy may be moral, if it disenticives overbearing DRM. I pay for things when the DRM is non-existant or non-invasive. I've chosen not to when it is. I've let companines know on their forums before that I'd love to buy their product, if only they didn't use iLok, or Denuvo, etc. I usually don't pirate though, I just find an alternative, even if I think they have the better product and would otherwise be willing to pay.
Here, here's someone I'm commissioning now, a basic sketch is $10 https://www.shiroganestudios.com/work/commissions
Given the project is FOSS, they'd probably be fine with that price still.
I could go through a list of literally hundreds of artists where $20 is within budget. The quality of simple logo like is needed here is about on part with what many would do for a telegram sticker, which are often about $5/piece.
Hundreds of dollars is totally reasonable if commercial. This isn't.
I also don't want to commission something for another project. They should get creative control in the process, else it just feels weird.
