veber-alex··on Rv, a new kind of Ruby management tool
MS uses Go for tsc because they are basically doing a line by line rewrite of tsc from typescript to Go.

It's impossible to do this kind of rewrite from a GC language to a non GC one, especially Rust where the object soup of typescript will probably cause the borrow checker to explode.

I think that if MS or someone else decided to write a typescript type checker from scratch there is a high chance Rust will be chosen.

veber-alex··on Zig's Lovely Syntax
So basically, Zig doesn't have lambdas, but because you still need lambdas, you need to reinvent the wheel each time you need it?

Why don't they just add lambdas?

veber-alex··on Partially Matching Zig Enums
Lol, what are you even trying to say here?

Is Zig such an amazing language that while using it you won't ever need reference-counted pointers?

veber-alex··on Partially Matching Zig Enums
I don't understand. Isn't this only useful if the value you match on is known at compile time?
veber-alex··on A deep dive into Rust and C memory interoperability
The reason you are not seeing crashes when allocating with Rust and freeing with C (or vice versa) is that by default Rust also uses the libc allocator.

veber-alex··on Vet is a safety net for the curl | bash pattern
rustup is available on plenty of distros now, and it's on homebrew in macOS.

The Rust docs should really offer installation methods other than curl | sh. Not from a security standpoint (I think that's nonsense) but I just don't like polluting my system with random stuff that is not managed by a package manager.

Edit: Yes, there is an "other installation methods" link, but the text makes it sound like it is only applicable for Windows.

veber-alex··on Using the Matrix Cores of AMD RDNA 4 architecture GPUs
I thought you can just get all the stuff you need in a docker container for both AMD and NVIDIA.

What does the OS even matter?

veber-alex··on Fstrings.wtf
I hate Rust's solution because it's not a solution at all.

Interpolation only works in a small subset of cases, which makes you constantly having to think whether it can or can't be used in the current situation and requires endless churn when refactoring code.

At the very minimum, they need to allow it to work with field access.

On the other hand, in python, while examples like this site exist and are funny/weird/quirky in practice nobody cares, and they just enjoy using fstrings.

veber-alex··on Linux Reaches 5% Desktop Market Share in USA
They didn't.
veber-alex··on Huawei releases an open weight model trained on Huawei Ascend GPUs
Calling TSMC "implementation details" is delusional.

If the only thing you needed to make cutting edge chips were some machines from ASML every country in the world would be making their own chips right now.

veber-alex··on Advanced Python Features
That's a mypy issue.

Pyright correctly deduces the type as int.

In any case it's a bad example as function signatures should always be typed.

veber-alex··on Getting forked by Microsoft
It's not the first time I see something like this.

The flake8 (MIT license) maintainer is upset that ruff is copying his lints, for example.

I find the whole thing bizarre.

veber-alex··on ChatGPT Search
I have been using Perplexity with the AI engine set to Claude 3.5 Sonnet for a month now, mostly for programming related questions, and it has been amazing. I mostly stopped using google.
veber-alex··on Nova by Panic: Native Mac code editor
> Nova is arguably one of the sexiest apps on the Mac right now – it looks gorgeous and it's far more "Mac-assed" than any of Apple's software, for starters.

Really? Looking at the screenshots from the front page it looks like a custom GUI framework and doesn't even look like a native macOS app, even the folder icons in the file tree are wrong. The only way I can tell it's a macOS app is by the traffic lights on the top left.

veber-alex··on Why is F# code robust and reliable?
Go's design is laser focused on fast compile times at the expense of everything else.
veber-alex··on Why is F# code robust and reliable?
I don't understand how this is called an advantage.

Dealing with cycles in Python is a total pain full of cryptic error messages, while in Rust cycles are fine as all top level items "come to exist" at the same time so they can depend on each other without any issues, and it makes refactoring a breeze.

Sounds like a compiler limitation touted as a feature.

veber-alex··on A high-performance, zero-overhead, extensible Python compiler using LLVM
What's up with their benchmarks[1], it just shows benchmark names and I don't see any numbers or graphs. Tried Safari and Chrome.

veber-alex··on Rustpad is an efficient and minimal open-source collaborative text editor
I am having a hard time seeing how this can be useful outside of remote code interviews.

Am I supposed to paste the code from IDE while collaborating?

I think this needs a vscode plugin, so I can share my code directly from vscode while other users just need a browser.

veber-alex··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
How does source code backs Google privacy claims?

AOSP so different than even Google own pixel phones it's code is basically irrelevant.

veber-alex··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
I shared your mentality.

I didn't get a case when I bought my 15 pro.

For two weeks I was without a case, dropped the phone two or three times.

Screen got scratched in 3 places and the paint chipped from around the bazel.

Went into a store and got a case.

veber-alex··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
So don't enable it.

ChatGPT is optional.

veber-alex··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
Everything is in the cloud now.

128GB is plenty for me.

veber-alex··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
The 16 Pro has a bigger display.

Each model now has a different display size.

You can choose between 6.1", 6.3", 6.7" and 6.9"

veber-alex··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
I am disappointed.

The 16 Pro is larger and heavier than the 15 pro which is already heavy.

I have small hands, I want a smaller and lighter phone.

Not going to buy the 16 because of lack of ProMotion.

veber-alex··on QUIC is not quick enough over fast internet
Have you looked into NVIDIA VMA?

https://docs.nvidia.com/networking/display/vmav9860/introduc...

veber-alex··on IPMI
Yep.

I had to write code to mount an iso image to a server, set the server to boot from it once and reboot the server to start the install.

I had to do it for 4 vendors. Dell, Lenovo, Fujitsu and Supermicro.

4 different vendors, 4 different Redfish APIs.

And what's annoying is that Redfish always looks similar so it fools you into thinking all the vendors do things the same way but no, suddenly some endpoint just doesn't exist in this vendors implementation and you have to scour the docs for this vendors unique magic uri.
