and what, 12" wide? 24"? that's still very difficult to target

vdqtp3··on Ryanair flight landed at Manchester airport with six minutes of fuel left
On the contrary - commercial aviation does aim for perfection.
vdqtp3··on Ryanair flight landed at Manchester airport with six minutes of fuel left
A cross controlled stall can result in a spin (which is probably what you mean by flip upside down). The rudder changes aren't inadvertent, they're intentionally opposite the aileron input - the goal is essentially to fly somewhat sideways, so the fuselage induces drag.

In general forward slips are safe, but yes you have to make sure you keep the nose down/speed up. There's little in aviation that isn't dangerous if you aren't careful.

In the US, we don't typically call Mayday/PanPan (despite it being both allowable and more correct). Pilots literally say "N777DS declaring an emergency. Engine out/Low fuel/Birdstrike". The effect is that all emergencies are Mayday.
vdqtp3··on Silver trades to $50 an ounce
Yes, the prices of all things vary according to the market supply and demand. That's very different from the government creating 25% inflation in 5 years.
vdqtp3··on Silver trades to $50 an ounce
It's more "real" because it has value that doesn't decrease arbitrarily when the people in power decide to print a couple trillion to deal with the latest hot topic.
vdqtp3··on Gmail will no longer support checking emails from third-party accounts via POP
Which is hilarious considering they can't seem to stop obvious spam from hitting my inbox
vdqtp3··on How can I influence others without manipulating them?
Rape is wrong. It doesn't matter what your evidence or positions or logic are, you will not sway me on that point. I suspect that sort of thing is what GP meant.

vdqtp3··on Building the most accurate DIY CNC lathe in the world [video]
> Milling machines are also just lathes

Mills are more limited than lathe - they don't have leadscrews, which are a necessity in the "build yourself" phase. You cannot make arbitrary threads with a milling machine. Thread milling gives some capability in this arena, but that's a CNC process.

vdqtp3··on China is eating the world
> An invading army has no such qualms.

> They won't try to arrest you, they'll simply blow up your house.

The point is, they'd have to blow up so many houses it's not viable.

vdqtp3··on I forced every engineer to take sales calls and they rewrote our platform
At my last job I worked in professional services, and after reporting multiple issues over and over and over through the normal process I finally wormed my way into a friendship with engineering and product leadership. A conversation with someone they trust was THE ONLY WAY to get them to take seriously a Jira report from the field saying "this is annoying/broken at every customer. Yes there is a workaround, but can we get it fixed?"

Product at every company I've worked for only ever cared about prioritizing shiny new features or bugs that have people screaming at them.

vdqtp3··on AWS CEO says using AI to replace junior staff is 'Dumbest thing I've ever heard'
Maneuvering speed is Va which is about max deflection on a single control surface, I think you're thinking of Vno if you're referring to turbulence
vdqtp3··on AWS CEO says using AI to replace junior staff is 'Dumbest thing I've ever heard'
> the safe manoeuverable speed increases with weight

The reason this is true is because at a higher weight, you'll stall at max deflection before you can put enough stress on the airframe to be a problem. That is to say, at a given speed a heavier airplane will fall out of the air [hyperbole, it will merely stall - significantly reduced lift] before it can rip the wings/elevator off [hyperbole - damage the airframe]. That makes it questionable whether heavier is safer - just changes the failure mode.

vdqtp3··on Emailing a one-time code is worse than passwords
Can you say "There will be no attestation in the consumer synced passkey ecosystem. Period."? That seems to be the concern, not what exists today.
vdqtp3··on Wired Called Our AirGradient Monitor 'Not Recommended' over a Broken Display
Why do you believe that collecting data, collating it into useful information and making conclusions from that information is "zero energy"? Yes, testing bicycles will require more calories and exertion, but that doesn't mean that testing computers, sensors, or other technological devices is a zero energy effort.
vdqtp3··on Microsoft tops $4T in valuation: Great news for MSFT, not so great for workers
ESPP is discounted from quarter end price (I vaguely recall it being either last q or following q, whichever is lower but that seems like too good to be true). So constantly increasing share price does have an effect, both short term and long.

vdqtp3··on Data brokers are selling flight information to CBP and ICE
> If you exclude people who are in states where it's legal/decriminalized

There is no state where cannabis derivatives are federally legal.

vdqtp3··on Data brokers are selling flight information to CBP and ICE
At this point in human history, is it relevant to the individual whether someone is a criminal? What matters is whether they've injured someone else.

To use the US as an example (I doubt other countries are much better) it's estimated that every adult in the US commits multiple Federal felonies per day[1], Federal law is replete with ridiculous laws[2] and the number of federal laws is uncountable by Congressional Research Service staff. Does it matter at that point?

vdqtp3··on Why random selection is necessary to create stable meritocratic institutions
Our elected reps neither write nor even read the laws that are passed. Laws are written by lobbyists and aides, if we're lucky with direction from the representatives.
vdqtp3··on FICO to incorporate buy-now-pay-later loans into credit scores
I picked two examples of everyday activities that should have been obvious to everyone that they were safe.

Mere weeks later public health authorities encouraged this sort of behavior (going to the beach or the park with ample space between individuals). It seemed a relevant example of "pointless and counterproductive policies around lockdowns"

vdqtp3··on FICO to incorporate buy-now-pay-later loans into credit scores
In Southern California, surfers were arrested for surfing on an empty beach. Parks were closed. This was hailed as a safety measure. I suspect these sorts of policies are what GP was talking about, rather than vaccines or masking.

vdqtp3··on Waymo rides cost more than Uber or Lyft and people are paying anyway
> prevent space sharing between the ~2-3 social groups where intermingling means friction and fear.

The issue is not space sharing between social groups. I'm happy to share space with people of any ethnicity, skin color, sexual orientation, political leanings, dress code, economic status, educational level or "social cohorts". The issue is civil, polite people being forced to share space with rude, entitled, violent individuals.

vdqtp3··on Waymo rides cost more than Uber or Lyft and people are paying anyway
> Maybe if you lived in a bigger city the taxis were good

I lived in a suburb of San Diego around 2012, and I switched to Uber after I missed two flights for work because taxi's just wouldn't show up on time. I don't love the rideshare services but taxis were simply so bad that anything was better.

vdqtp3··on Self-hosting your own media considered harmful according to YouTube
There are literally dozens of stories of people being jailed in the UK for tweets that are not threats or inciting violence, they're just "grossly offensive". I agree, they are almost all grossly offensive - but if you only allow speech you find acceptable, that's not free speech.
vdqtp3··on My AI skeptic friends are all nuts
And they're typically the ones cheering the loudest for LLM centric coding. It's hard to believe in something people you don't respect are saying is the best thing they've ever seen.
