vdnkh··on Liz Truss resigns as UK prime minister
> I know it is fairly popular on HN to say that any party that is coded ring-wing is terrible

No it's not, HN is definitely biased conservative.

vdnkh··on Twitch finally takes action against gambling
Twitch is explicitly not a free speech platform: https://dotesports.com/streaming/news/twitch-isnt-a-free-spe...

"Twitch prioritizes minimizing harm to our users over freedom of expression, and we will limit some expression with the goal of preventing, protecting users from, and moderating hateful behavior and harassment."

This may come as a surprise to the average HN viewer, but not every tech company strives for a libertarian ethos

vdnkh··on Twilio to lay off 11% of workforce
This, and HN in aggregate is pretty right wing, so anything "woke" is bound to trigger a lot of people. I suppose there's always been a libertarian bend here in line tech workers in general, but ever since Trump (and especially Trump's loss), topics vaguely supporting progressive ideas are home to tons of comments airing right-wing grievances.
vdnkh··on Twitter shareholders vote in favor of Elon Musk's $44B takeover deal
Sorry Elon, no refunds
vdnkh··on Ask HN: What happened to vanilla HTML/CSS/JS development?
ITT: non-web developers whining about JavaScript (a favorite pasttime of HN)
vdnkh··on AirPods Pro Service Program for Sound Issues
I completed a 500 mile hike wearing AirPod pros and they're still kicking
vdnkh··on Apple Event Live Blog: iPhone 14, Apple Watch, AirPods Pro, and More Expected
Let's get the usual HN comments out of the way:

* Android has had this for N years

* My {cheap phone} is indistinguishable from the new iPhone

* ${X}?

* Walled garden

* iPhones wouldn't be popular without the iMessage lock-in

* Throttling was literally 1984

HN Libertarians: The Marketplace of Ideas is essential to discourse

HN Libertarians when the free market acts: No, not like that!

vdnkh··on Supreme Court limits EPA’s power to cut emissions
Lol
vdnkh··on Supreme Court limits EPA’s power to cut emissions
Over the past few years I've noticed that HN has swung very far to the right. Any politically-adjacent topic tends to feature more than a few upvoted right-wing grievance posts. I still like HN for the articles but it's honestly insufferable to read the comments.

On this particular topic, it's infuriating to see the average HN bozo think of the constitution as a set of unit tests for justices to run through.

vdnkh··on Supreme Court limits EPA’s power to cut emissions
You're ignoring the fact that there are several philosophies behind constitutional interpretation, and that the dominant philosophy which you list here ("sole job is to interpret laws through the lens of the Constitution"), also called Originalism, is a recent creation by Scalia.
vdnkh··on FDA to order Juul e-cigarettes off U.S. market
> The second hand smoke you’d encounter on a sidewalk is completely harmless. A

Fine, I don't want to smell it because I find the smell gross. Same concept.

vdnkh··on FDA to order Juul e-cigarettes off U.S. market
I never want to breathe in cigarette smoke on the sidewalk because of the damage to my health. Why does the individual freedom to do whatever you want overrule my individual freedom not to be affected by the externalities of your choices? The fundamental flaw in your argument is that you focus almost exclusively on individual right to the detriment of public good.
vdnkh··on Sunsetting Atom
> One could imagine a world where strong standards have been established w

And yet this didn't happen and Electron did. The "free market" of FOSS development settled on Electron as the winner for cross-platform development.

vdnkh··on Video Live Streaming: Notes on RTMP, HLS, and WebRTC
Twitch latency in low-latency mode is ~2s (you can check for yourself in the settings cog menu -> advanced -> video stats) because of "prefetch segments", which are delivered via HTTP 1.1 streaming body responses. The client requests this segment and long polls while frames are delivered as they're being encoded. It's simpler and cheaper than WebRTC or Apple's low-latency HLS parts, and scales to hundreds of thousands of viewers. The downside is that it's not part of the HLS specification so support for it needs to be bespoke, but it is a proven technology that wasn't covered here (and to my knowledge, the most widely used low latency HTTP solution by # of users). Twitch has been using this for years.
vdnkh··on State is hard: why SPAs will persist
The HN hivemind hates JavaScript, mostly because they believe that complexity on the web is a problem self-inflicted by eager "framework devs" continuously chasing the "new shiny", which in their mind invalidates any legitimate engineering credibility or progress.
vdnkh··on Ask HN: What to do about ‘Good at programming Bad at Leetcode’
> Silicon Valley and its satellites seem to disproportionately favor code interviews compared to the rest of the US market, for some ungodly reason.

I work at a well known SV tech company with about 3k ppl and we got over 50,000 job applications last year. Code interviews suck, but they're a scalable way to assess skill with minimal bias.

vdnkh··on Scarcity Truthers
We have a left, it's just overshadowed and punished by the Democrat centrist majority, and the right wing political majority. Plenty of politicians in the progressive caucus have been pushing for reform for years, but the sad reality of our political system is that it's incredibly difficult for them to pass legislation. But that's not to say we don't have a left.

Furthermore, the US left leads on progressive social values compared to Europe, such as immigration and social justice. The average European sentiment on race and immigration, such as their attitude towards Romani/"Gypsies" and Muslims is definitely considered right-wing in America.

vdnkh··on Twitter CEO fires two top executives, freezes hiring
"Without RSS Twitter will never succeed"
vdnkh··on NY Senate Bill S5474 proposing a universal single payer health plan for NYers
> This would drive down costs to the point even the poor can get some decent medical treatment

Or we could just offer free healthcare without relying on unfettered capitalism to "work".

>unnecessary work

With capitalism as the driving force, anything unprofitable becomes unnecessary. Probably goes without saying, but focusing on profitability likely won't drive the best healthcare outcomes.

vdnkh··on NY Senate Bill S5474 proposing a universal single payer health plan for NYers
> Personally, I’d like to see some states ban healthcare outright. Others have full coverage and everything in between. Then wait 10 years and we can see the results. I strongly suspect there would be states willing to do this.

This is the most HN comment I've ever seen

vdnkh··on Homes in 97% of U.S. cities are overvalued, Moody's says
Trump's tax cuts certainly didn't help either. Or let's just blame it on "handouts" again.
vdnkh··on Obama argues unregulated social media is a threat to democracy
Case in point
vdnkh··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
Look around, HN has swung very right in the past two years. The comments in any thread related to hot button issues turn into right-wing grievance fests (such as this one).
vdnkh··on We analyzed 100K technical interviews to see where the best performers work
Why do you think the best engineers are hard to work with?
vdnkh··on Altruism under stress: cortisol negatively predicts charitable giving
This is a hilarious/sad generalization of a country of ~330 million people masquerading as an investigation into stress. I get the impression that you started with the point you wanted to make - "never trust an American" - and then stumbled backwards from there into a very rigorous exploration of the the cause and effect of stress.
vdnkh··on Ask HN: How likely are we to see a financial crash this year?
Job losses? Unemployment has been consistently decreasing: https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm

Edit: american jobs

vdnkh··on A Bitcoin Mine at a Natural Gas Well in Texas
Bitcoin is not crucial to build more sustainable societies.
vdnkh··on Version 100 in Chrome and Firefox
Getting a browser vendor to fix something takes a lot of effort, and doesn't immediately alleviate any impact on users. "if (browser.name === 'safari' && browser.version < 14)" does.
vdnkh··on Version 100 in Chrome and Firefox
This is probably due to DRM which is poorly supported by Linux (lazy devs will probably just exile Linux completely). But I do remember some linux-only decoder issues in the past. Decoder and codec support is just poorly signaled overall, even if an API says it supports it, it may not support a specific profile or even support it well.

Some of our video test grid machines are Ubuntu, so from our end Twitch video should work pretty well on Linux :-)
