vaughnegut··on I Lost Faith in Kagi
Honestly what he says makes sense in his "rebuttal", except for the part where he continues emailing after being told to stop.

I actually stumbled across the AI stuff being turned off by default yesterday when I got curious and was poking around the feature request forum. It was explicitly because a lot of people hate it for moral/ethical reasons. A lot of the comments in the replies are specifically about the AI stuff in spite of it being disabled by default.

Most of this seems fine for a startup?

vaughnegut··on Show HN: Glossarie – a new, immersive way to learn a language
This leads to a not found page, was the app taken down?
vaughnegut··on Show HN: Glossarie – a new, immersive way to learn a language
Looks great! I'd like to try it but the play store link has this error:

> We're sorry, the requested URL was not found on this server.

vaughnegut··on Weather forecasts have become more accurate
Where can one learn to read radar, sounds fun and useful!
vaughnegut··on Go run
iirc a lot of deno is inspired by the good parts of go, so that's not an accident
vaughnegut··on Go run
That's why you have a go.mod file that specifies the dependencies for you. Just run go mod tidy and it generates/updates it for you. You get these reproducible builds for free this way.
vaughnegut··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
It's not too confusing, I think it's mostly that they're in the process of changing the naming.

- Bard: Retiring this name - Gemini: model name (honestly less confusing than just calling it "GPT") - Gemini Advanced: More capable gemini model - Gemini Ultra: Most capable gemini model - Gemini 1.0: They version their models together, gemini has hit 1.0 ad is (supposedly) ready for prime time

vaughnegut··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
This is also the first time Bard is available in Canada from what I can see.
vaughnegut··on Korea to welcome 'digital nomads' with new visa starting Jan. 1
Having lived there around ten years ago, it's pretty exotic if you're north American, it's cheaper for food and drink, and English proficiency was pretty common.
vaughnegut··on Paged Out Issue #3
Super happy to see this, I'd given up hope and had been checking in around once a year until this year. It's such a fun format for a magazine.
vaughnegut··on The NYPD is using drones 3 times more than it did last year
I remember hearing about this exact tech being used by the Americans to surveil Iraqis and trace suicide bombings (typically with a loitering blimp), described in breathless dystopian tones. I'm not sure why I'm surprised it's used by civilian agencies to watch American citizens. It's a kind of death of privacy in which you're constantly being watched and you can be watched even backwards through time.
vaughnegut··on Cloudflare API, dashboard, tunnels down
This has become my knee jerk reaction to these kinds of outages. It's always interesting when the more indepth engineering-focused post-mortem comes out
vaughnegut··on Ask HN: Distributed Systems Course Suggestions
I went down the same rabbit hole not too long ago. My top two: 1. Distributed Systems for Fun and Profit [0]: Introduction to all the core concepts and (about as importantly) has a reading list you can use to learn more at the end of each chapter.

2. MIT 6.5840 [1]: The MIT distributed systems class has links to all readings, lectures, and even assignments (openly available git repos you can clone). I worked my way through most of it and it was excellent. Read the paper, watch the video lecture (students in the videos asked good questions I would have wanted to ask), and do the assignments. It was far more approachable than I anticipated but very rigorous.

Both are excellent. I did the first one and then most of the second and learned a lot. In either case, reading papers was really illuminating (especially when paired with the context form tje lecture or the book).

vaughnegut··on NotebookLM: An AI Notebook
This is exactly what it does, no? The product explicitly is about taking your notes that you write and being able to discuss those notes with the AI. It's in all of the screenshots and the description.
vaughnegut··on Show HN: Hacker News user experience enhancement browser extension
Any word on when Firefox would be ready? I love the split panes
vaughnegut··on Show HN: Open sourcing Harmonic, my Android Hacker News client
First of all, I love the app (I'm writing this comment on it write now)!

I'd always wondered, is the UI inspired by Relay for Reddit? The sliding between, colour-coded comment chains you tap to collapse, I absolutely love it and it's the only other place I've seen it. I wish more apps used this style, it's so intuitive, pretty, and pleasant to use

vaughnegut··on Ask HN: What's your favorite GPT powered tool?
Yeah Phind is the only AI service I use on a daily basis. Plus, free access to GPT-4 in answers is a bonus. They really nailed the experience
vaughnegut··on PaLM 2 Technical Report [pdf]
You can use gpt-4 for free (toggle "Use best model"), and it'll search the internet and state sources on https://phind.com

No idea when they'll start charging, but it's replaced a lot of my googling at work

vaughnegut··on Unity to lay off 8% of its workforce
They also have a services product line for gameserver hosting (Apex Legends uses it), voice/text chat (Riot Games uses it), and a few other things.

vaughnegut··on Pentagon leaks linked to young gun enthusiast who worked at military base
I thought bellingcat actually had a pretty decent track record, and they typically dump all their findings and their methods. They don't even have a "Controversy" section on wikipedia, which is a half-decent litmus test.
vaughnegut··on Unity Software Lays Off More Workers as Tech Job Cuts Grow
Looking at the article, seems to be mostly live entertainment division (think "watch a sproting event from any angle") and redundant jobs after the IronSource merger (ads).

Really sad to see, hopefully some of them find new roles internally.

vaughnegut··on Ask HN: In-depth sites for various industries' news?
I actually went down this rabbit hole yesterday and found a consensus around the Wall Street Journal's Logistics Report [1] and Supply Chain Dive [2].

vaughnegut··on Running Stable Diffusion on Your GPU with Less Than 10Gb of VRAM
On my 3070 I get that error unless I set my batch size to 1. My typical setup is to do six batches of one and it works fine (although I minimize the number of visible things on my screen while it's running). This reliably produces one image every 7-8 seconds.
vaughnegut··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
While true, it doesn't really disprove what the poster above is saying, since they lived in Beijing, the place that China's timezone is roughly centered on.
vaughnegut··on Rare real colour photos of WWII
If anyone is interested, this flickr account consists of digitized colour slides (so pretty high quality) from WWII and the Korean War:

vaughnegut··on Ask HN: What are you favourite books/podcasts/media on the history of computing?
I read this last year and it was excellent. I'd recommend it to anyone who has never it before and has an interest.
vaughnegut··on The secret Uganda deal that has brought NSO to the brink of collapse
Would that imply that it would function as well for Canadian phone numbers, since they share a country code?
vaughnegut··on Canada taps into strategic reserves to deal with shortage of maple syrup
Canada produces something like 70-80% of the world's maple syrup, and as the article says Quebec alone produces around 70% of the world's maple syrup. I imagine our flag combined with that most maple syrup people are consuming definitely give the impression people here are incredibly into maple syrup.
vaughnegut··on Web page that crashes the Chrome renderer
Anyone know why it causes a crash?

I cleaned up the javascript a bit by adding whitespace and more meaningful variable names:

vaughnegut··on Stranded sailor allowed to leave abandoned ship after four years
Anyone know how the issue was resolved? The article doesn't actually say what changed about his situation to allow him to leave.
