varkson··on Report: Chinese phone comes preloaded with spyware
Well, I just don't know. I don't have the same phone this but it's made me wonder.
varkson··on Nokia 'paid millions to software blackmailers six years ago'
The difference is that OpenSSL updating was the responsibility of the admins maintaining the server, not general public. The general public did have to act, but it wasn't something technical like updating firmware on a phone is.

Back in the day, I had an S60 phone but no way to even connect it to a computer to get the firmware.

varkson··on Microsoft Paying Bloggers to Write about Internet Explorer
Meh, so many companies do this, it's not new or evil.
varkson··on Report: Chinese phone comes preloaded with spyware
I'm currently using an offbrand Chinese Android phone, so this news has made me very very nervous.
varkson··on Firefox 30.0
Sorry to here you hate homosexuals.
varkson··on Firefox 30.0
You should probably build your OS and all your software from scratch, cause it seems you have a problem with using software that doesn't meet your arbitrary guidelines.
varkson··on Why did it take so long for Windows to support multi-monitor taskbars?
MS is still a business. Why should they care about the vocal minorities?
varkson··on Why did it take so long for Windows to support multi-monitor taskbars?
Dexpot is very good for that, feels basically native if you set it up right.
varkson··on Fitness Crazed
I'm not 40 or anything, but I know personally I love fitness. It's great to feel like you've accomplished something and the feeling is great after a stressful day at work. It doesn't have to be about the opposite sex if you don't want it to be.

It's something you can't understand unless you try it.

varkson··on Autodesk announces new 3D printer and open platform
Lightroom is Adobe, not Autodesk.

That said though, there's a reason these products exist and there are people who need them.

varkson··on AdBlock Plus’s effect on Firefox’s memory usage
IE contains a general purpose blocker. You just download an ad list from the Add Ons site and it does it all in browser.
varkson··on Oracle continue to circumvent EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL()
Can someone explain the point of having EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL() and EXPORT_SYMBOL()? Is it trying to protect the user from accidentally violating the GPL?

More importantly, why is there no high resolution clock available from EXPORT_SYMBOL()? Is it deliberately gimped, or is there issues with getting such a piece of software into the kernel whilst not being GPL'd?

varkson··on The next version of DuckDuckGo
That's more the fault of the site itself for not using title tags properly, but, yeah I do agree that a full URL option would be ideal.
varkson··on Wikipedia redesign
You say that but your average user isn't going to make sure they keep their browser window to some arbitrary amount. People just tend to makes it fullscreen, myself included.
varkson··on Wikipedia redesign
No way, HN is shockingly bad. It's the only site where I feel like an extra stylesheet is necessary. Text is too small and hard to read.
varkson··on Microsoft OneDrive for Business modifies files as it syncs
I'm pretty sure this user is referencing the link checking bot news that came out mid last year. Basically, a Skype bot HEADs links placed in messages. It's hard to say why, maybe it checks for 404ed links.
varkson··on Microsoft OneDrive for Business modifies files as it syncs
>Bing was censoring stuff from China globally

That's not a privacy infringement, that just sounds like production code went up to the wrong server.

varkson··on Why We Do All-Hands Support at Olark
Personally I enjoy it and consider it the best thing to happen to my career. Couldn't do it all day every day but doing support on the side is rather enjoyable IMO.
varkson··on Why We Do All-Hands Support at Olark
I feel the opposite. I'm a dev who is also support. I don't generally get the 'please reset my password' kind of requests, as we don't get them very often, but help users with our system and work on fixing bugs they report.

I find you get a different perspective on what customers find easy and hard and this helps me develop my projects in a way that our customers will understand.

varkson··on Dozens of teenagers are now tweeting bomb jokes to American Airlines
I want to think this is some sort of protest over the treatment of the girl, but I actually think it's just some more kids wanting their 15 minutes of fame.

I hope the girl doesn't get in a lot of trouble. All they needed to do was to get someone to talk to her and tell her it was a really dumb idea.

varkson··on Meyrin: CERN Terminal Font
I ran this as my main terminal font for quite a while. As long as you set it to the exact size it's designed for, it's actually very readable.
varkson··on The Operating System That Can Protect You Even if You Get Hacked
It's just a very boring video, I watched it to make sure.
varkson··on Earth to Mozilla: Come back home
I can understand that. I'm a webdev by trade, mainly maintenance so that's more or less what I do day in day out.
varkson··on Earth to Mozilla: Come back home
That's why I stopped using NoScript long ago. Things should just work, and NoScript doesn't let things just work. It'd be good if it had a list or something, but I have no clue what it would actually block/allow, since that's specific to the user's purpose.
varkson··on Earth to Mozilla: Come back home
Who reads a car manual?

If you want to continue that, you could consider the manual to be about:config. No one is stopping you from reading the manual or going to about:config, but it's not required.

varkson··on What Heartbleed Can Teach The OSS Community About Marketing
I seriously wished they had something like:

Step 1: Run this command. If it returns "Your vulnerable!" go to step 2.

And so on, with actionable steps that people could quickly understand and circulate.

varkson··on Critical Vulnerability: AWS Credential Disclosure
How would someone manage to get commented out PHP in the HTML? Has the behaviour changed? The only way I can think of doing it would be to replace the PHP open and close with HTML comments. I can't imagine anyone doing that.
varkson··on The Fallacy of Android-First
Many Android fans have a persecution complex. See Reddit's Android subreddit for more. I can't stand the place, even when I used Android phones.
varkson··on Google Now for Chrome
The one time where it really blew my mind is when it told me about updates to blogs I visit. I'd visit a blog on my desktop, then when I was checking my phone, it let me know there was an update. It was cool but at the same time a bit bothersome that Google was recording my sites.
