variety8675··on Realistic RCE Exploit Chain in OpenBao and Vault
> As too many vulnerabilities have been unilaterally disclosed by HashiCorp–including last year’s RCE–the OpenBao maintainers declined to continue proactively disclosing and coordinating vulnerabilities with HashiCorp, despite initially doing this.

You'd never guess Red Hat and HashiCorp are owned by the same company

variety8675··on Bananas That Don't Go Brown to Hit Supermarkets Thanks to DNA Editing
Biotech is trying to take banana bread away from us
variety8675··on OpenAI to Halt Training of Some Models
Seems more likely they've hit a wall with improvements and need to justify why it's slowing down to investors
variety8675··on AI Has Cracked the Most Diabolical Problems in Math. Why Can't It Solve Chess?
Why would they invest resources into chess? There are no impressive marketing announcements to be had when chess engines are already superhuman on a cell phone
variety8675··on George Hotz’s opinion on AI coding
> that isn't software development, it looks a lot more like a slightly more flexible WordPress.

I've had this same thought when I see all these vibe coded apps that look exactly the same

variety8675··on OpenAI (2015)
> We believe the goal and the structure are right

Aged like milk lol

variety8675··on What do you do now as a software engineer?
IMO the value of engineering has always been understanding the problem and designing a way to solve it. If you think about the average day of a non-entry level engineer, the vast majority of it has never been hands on keyboard typing code.
variety8675··on GPT-6 Sol might acutally be GPT-6 Terra
This ignores the fact that the new model is slightly better than what it replaces
variety8675··on LLM Ass Bench
The idea that they're going to benchmaxx this in the future amuses me
variety8675··on Claude Opus 5.5
I hope this actually fixes the terrible writing style of Opus 5
variety8675··on Show HN: Vigil - Keeps your Mac awake while your coding agents work
How is this better than the built in caffeinate cli? https://ss64.com/mac/caffeinate.html
variety8675··on Ask HN: Is AI use not allowed in projects which is shared here to show?
I think it becomes not slop when it is useful or unique. The projects that just lazily reimplement something that has been done 10 times before are generally the least impressive
variety8675··on Ask HN: Is AI use not allowed in projects which is shared here to show?
Why would I spend my time reviewing something that the “author” didn’t even spend time to create? I think there is a huge difference between AI assisted and AI slop
variety8675··on The first mRNA flu shot is now available. Here's who can get it

variety8675··on Stocks had a great Monday, but something alarming occurred not seen since 1999
Anyone that can predict this will not be sharing it for free online
variety8675··on Ask HN: Do You Use Siri?
It is just as useless as before, just slower
variety8675··on Turn off and restrict access to Apple Intelligence features on Mac
Hopefully someone will make a script or small app to disable all of this in one click
variety8675··on Amazon blocks Meta's Muse AI shopping agent
This is why we need antitrust laws
variety8675··on I stopped drinking the AI Kool-Aid
I mean honestly yes, if given the choice not to interact with an AI system for something I will. Simple example, the Comcast AI slop bot stonewalls you online, but you can walk into a retail location and have a human resolve the issue in 30 seconds
variety8675··on I stopped drinking the AI Kool-Aid
Using AI agents to email each other is just a reflection of "If you're not going to bother to write it, I'm not going to read it"
variety8675··on Ask HN: What is one plausible path to 'AI extinction'?
Every time a new technology appears a group says it will end us all - https://www.newyorker.com/culture/infinite-scroll/the-age-ol...
variety8675··on If You Knew God Exists, Wouldn't You Become a Priest?
If a lab achieves super intelligence they have absolutely no incentive to let anyone outside of their walls use it. They could simply take all of the economic value it can create directly for themselves. I think of it as similar to when YouTubers get big enough to make their own companies rather then advertising for someone else
variety8675··on Can you tell which images are AI-generated?
Great point, in the privacy disclosure they confirm they're collecting the training data.

> Reality Check records visits, round starts and finishes, image views, answers, response times....records are stored in Cloudflare D1

variety8675··on Can you tell which images are AI-generated?
I realized this is only somewhat difficult because of the 10s timer. Most people probably don’t spend more than 10s looking at a picture on social media, excellent project.
variety8675··on Open Weights Are Good. Open Source Is Better
I suspect part of the reluctance to release Open Source models is the fact that they’d have to disclose what data was used to train it
variety8675··on Saving another 100TB of RAM
It’s nice to see Cloudflare is letting humans write the blog posts again after all the fallout from their LLM slop blogs
variety8675··on iCloud+ Now Includes Apple TV and Apple Arcade
Sadly this doesn’t include the US
variety8675··on I Connected My Withings Body+ to Home Assistant with an ESP32
The interesting thing here is the opportunity to make a sdk for interfacing with the Withings hardware offline. This is the first public example I’ve seen of someone attempting that
variety8675··on The moral panic over data centres is foolish
The actual public outage is driven by fear of what happens to the economy if all work is automated
