variant··on Southwest cancels 5,400 flights in less than 48 hours
But, if customers really valued this predictability, wouldn't a US airline offer it and take all the business?

It's not important enough to consumers, which is why the EU has to regulate it. And I'd be very interested to see how much more predictable they really are for the extra cost...

variant··on Southwest cancels 5,400 flights in less than 48 hours
Regulation imposes those costs and more on real humans and rarely heads off fuckups.

Market forces can correct here. Vote with your wallet.

variant··on Southwest cancels 5,400 flights in less than 48 hours
FAA has an important role, but market forces won't tolerate an airline that experiences crashes, even rare ones. Airlines are highly incented to be safe, both by regulation and by the market itself.

How badly did SWA's past high profile failures affect them? I'd say not so very much. Yes, some short term damage, but we're talking about an industry where no one stands out from a quality perspective. Everyone is seen as some degree of bad, much like big ISP's. People are used to rotating between airlines and, while those affected this round may shift away, others will get frustrated with their preferred carrier and rotate to Southwest.

I think reputation impacts in this industry from anything other than crashes don't hold much staying power.

I'm actually quite tempted to buy the SWA dip...

Doesn't do a digest (at least not that I'm aware of), but rss2email[1] does a good job of aggregating feed updates into your email inbox.

variant··on MS Teams Linux client is being retired. To be replaced by a progressive web app
Please, for the love of all that is pure, just make Teams a native Windows app instead of this Chromium/Electron crap that feels out of place on any platform, not to mention being dog slow.

And please leave Outlook alone. Don't even think about turning it into a junky cross platform web-ish app.

variant··on Let’s Not Have a Beer
Yes, definitely!

Caveat - I have no issue with someone drinking alcohol, coffee or whatever, but caffeine certainly has many drug-like addictive aspects to it.

My addiction is vending machine candy. I might put it on par with coffee. :)

variant··on Let’s Not Have a Beer
I somewhat relate to this. I don't drink and never really have, but do find it tends to be the center of many conversations and of after-hours work-related events, be it vendors or what have you.

It's never really posed a huge problem for me to tag along and drink something non-alcoholic though, and it gives me (an introvert) and excuse to skip out on some more drinking-centric social events (where people are just going to get hammered) that I'd prefer to avoid.

People love alcohol and I don't expect this aspect of culture to shift anytime soon nor would I push for it to. If I miss out on some social climbing outcome, so be it.

variant··on Nutanix Objects violates MinIO’s open source license
MinIO is leveraging their switch to the AGPL license as a vehicle to extract immense seven figure plus licensing agreements from "big" companies who relied on non-AGPL versions of the code in the past.

I don't know if that makes MinIO bad, better or good but it's all about money.

variant··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
Yep. We would do well to more often remind ourselves that employment is an exercise in voluntary association.

These folks were unhappy with their working conditions. They're now free to find employ somewhere else that suits them better while others who want to be at SpaceX will replace them.

Markets are great!

variant··on VC Meltdown
Too much money chasing too few goods.

- Low interest rates for years made money cheap (drives debt and stock market)

- Stimulus during 2020 & 2021 has thrown an immense amount of cash into the economy

variant··on VC Meltdown
Bogleheads is a forum of primarily disciplined investors interested in becoming wealthy over the long term via steady contributions to a risk diversified portfolio. It's a pretty knowledgeable community with a lot of high earners in medical & technology fields.

These are investors who are diligently adding to their $VTI position not dabbling in high-risk venture capital backed companies.

Easy to predict doom, though. If you do it enough, you'll eventually be right.

These are strange times. Interest rates rising, inflation crazy but economy and job market is pretty hot.

As a Bogleheader myself, I'll keep plunking money into my ETF's at discounted prices and believe it'll pay off long term. :)

variant··on Apple Is Union-Busting in NYC, Labor Group Alleges
This issue always confuses me. Unions are neither always good nor always bad. Advocacy and discussion is part of the process.

More power to Apple if it wants to attempt to convince its workers that forming a union will not be in their best interest. More power to the workers if they want to listen to voices on the other side.

Carry on.

variant··on Decision looms for controversial Poseidon desalination plant
Tons of the water is used for fish too.

Agriculture does seem kind of important...

variant··on Elon Musk appointed to twitters board of directors
I'm not an expert, but this article may be relevant:

https://securitiesregulationmonitor.com/Lists/Posts/Post.asp...

He may ultimately file an amendment. Seems like 13G doesn't preclude some discussions w/ the board but less certain what happens once you're appointed to the board.

variant··on Ask HN: Is Apple down?
Yeah. Was wondering if they'd enabled it and backed off when it didn't work.
variant··on Ask HN: Is Apple down?
I think something with DNSSEC:

variant··on Ask HN: Is Apple down?
Some reports that there were DNSSEC validation issues w/ proxy.safebrowsing.apple which CNAMEs to aaplimg.com.
variant··on Driverless cars won’t be good for the environment if they lead to more auto use
It doesn't matter. The only thing that might help the environment is if we ceased the vast majority of travel and went back to walking.
variant··on Reclaiming the lost art of Linux server administration
Not quite the angle the author was getting at, but have noticed at $dayjob that staff who are able to do some incredibly complex automation against Linux-based stacks, containers, etc. - get quite lost when something low level isn't working right. Gaps in understanding of OS level troubleshooting and concepts gets them stuck.

You're wise to keep staff around who understand the low level stuff, in addition to the shiny new abstraction based tools.

variant··on Whistleblower to Congress: Facebook products harm kids and democracy
Honestly not sure that we learned too much 'new' from this:

- People don't like it when others say (or provide a platform for) things they disagree with.

- Teenagers are angsty and emotionally/physically insecure.

But surely the above is something an unelected bureaucrat can fix if we only give them enough money.

variant··on Facebook going down meant more than just a social network being unavailable
There are myriad options for communications. Being "regulated" won't make any of them more or less reliable (though probably will insulate them even further from competition).
