vanilla··on Show HN: Diagram as code tool with draggable customizations
ilograph [0] has these features. I think it should be possible with SVG only. The main use-case would be for documentation sites.

vanilla··on Show HN: Diagram as code tool with draggable customizations
This looks like a very promising project, I have been looking for exactly this.

One feature I would love to see a declarative diagramming solution would support is a hover pop-up with more information or nested diagrams.

vanilla··on Starcloud
space debris, radiation and no maintenance. The buzzwords sure sound cool, but make absolutely no sense.
vanilla··on AI Data Centers May Consume More Electricity Than Entire Cities
Crypto currencies consume more than entire countries. AI has at least good uses compared to that. I have yet to come across a single good use-case. It will never offset the damage that is has done and is currently still doing. But I am still looking. Web3 is going great... maybe it is time to reduce the energy consumption that is only doing harm.
vanilla··on Dokku – Free Heroku Alternative
We have been using it for our internal dev and test environment.

I was very disappointed that it did not have tcp/udp proxy support. Fortunately the plug-in system allowed us to extend this functionality in a day.

Dokku is very nice for this use-case. No need to have a complicated kubernetes setup.

vanilla··on United States military and prostitution in South Korea
Below [1] is an interview with a "Comfort Woman". The story is much more gruesome than the Wikipedia entry suggests.

vanilla··on I tried creating a web browser, and Google blocked me
Here is a good talk on that topic[1].

Widevine does not come bundled with Firefox & Chrome. Each installation has to download the Widevine binary. You would be able to use the binary to implement DRM support, like Kodi did.

vanilla··on Don't tell people to turn off Windows Update
If you are in remote africa, with a sattelite uplink, windows updates/traffic should be configurable.

vanilla··on Show HN: BreakLock – A hybrid of Mastermind and the Android pattern lock
I think trying to exclude nodes is more efficient than trying to find the correct ones.

After you excluded all "bad" nodes, you need to find the order. finding the order with the help of "bad" nodes was also faster for me

I went from 56 to a lucky 5 tries.

vanilla··on Postal: Open source mail delivery platform, alternative to Mailgun or Sendgrid
This seems to be the software behind appmail.io[1], a service just like mailgun and sendgrid.

vanilla··on A Simple Makefile for Medium-Sized C/C++ Projects
This is not simple. I haven't made my own Makefiles, because when I see them, they are complex and not easy to understand.

That's why I chose CMake for my projects. If this is simple, I chose the right build tool.

This build file of a large project is easier to understand than the "Simple Makefile"

vanilla··on Hacking with LaTeX
combining that with a docker container breakout would be interesting

vanilla··on Unix is not an acceptable Unix
I can't follow the comparison.

Linux is just a Kernel, most distros use the coreutils package which is developed/maintained by GNU [1].

So any comparison is not between Linux and Unix, rather the GNU part in GNU/Linux

vanilla··on Node OS
npm gives you dependency hell in a medium sized project, with a node_modules folder 10 times larger than the project.

This on a OS level ... interesting

vanilla··on Standard Markdown Is Now Common Markdown
when you listen to him the linked podcast, you will understand why they went ahead after 2 weeks of no contact. He has an established tendency to do that.

Even in the podcast he mentions an (serious and lucrative) offer for his @markdown twitter account, instead of answering he actively chooses not to.

He mentions the ongoing discussion on HIS mailing list which he read has a opinion about, but chooses not to respond.

vanilla··on Show HN: GitHub-based DNS Hosting
it might not cause problems, but is not very concise

adding syntax to support new features always causes problems (python .. ^cough^)

vanilla··on Show HN: GitHub-based DNS Hosting
Using 6 as a prefix for ipv6 might be a bad idea.

The DNS Specification (RFC2181[1]) states:

>The DNS itself places only one restriction on the particular labels that can be used to identify resource records. That one restriction relates to the length of the label and the full name. The length of any one label is limited to between 1 and 63 octets. A full domain name is limited to 255 octets (including the separators). The zero length full name is defined as representing the root of the DNS tree, and is typically written and displayed as ".". Those restrictions aside, __any binary string whatever can be used as the label of any resource record.__

>Implementations of the DNS protocols must not place any restrictions on the labels that can be used. In particular, DNS servers must not refuse to serve a zone because it contains labels that might not be acceptable to some DNS client programs.

As an example these are all valid domains

   6.4424.cn, 6www.4424.cn, 6662.cn
But Separating the prefix and domain with a space would already fix the issue.

vanilla··on Microsoft Open Sources C# Compiler
I fell that they are doing it because of a growing threat from Linux as a Windows alternative.

With Valve pushing their Debian fork and more gaming support for Linux in the last time, Microsoft wan't to appeal to the Open Source community the reduce the "bashing" which ... which could actually loose some force behind it. Not that it could actually benefit Linux with better Mono support etc.

vanilla··on Hack: a new programming language for HHVM
just gone though the slides of a Hack Talk (https://raw.github.com/strangeloop/StrangeLoop2013/master/sl...)

> • [ X ] The name of your language makes it impossible to find on Google”

appending "-lang" certainly gives you better results but still does not find you a lot of un-tagged good blog posts

vanilla··on Hack: a new programming language for HHVM
Naming a language hack ... very poor choice. Searching for Go, C, C++ is already bad, now you can add hack to the list.
