valianteffort··on Google to buy Wiz for $32B
100% the case
valianteffort··on Agency > Intelligence
I'm sure this thought has crossed most peoples mind at some point. There are a lot of people out there just cruising as life happens to them.

And perhaps intelligence is more of an indicator of agency.

valianteffort··on Unwanted advances: Apple's Memories, AirDrop pose problems for vulnerable women
I don't know what's more insulting, writing this article that treats women as though they lack any agency over their actions, or reading it.
valianteffort··on Trump received $273.2M in donations from tech executives and VCs
The SV vibe shift post Trump assassination attempt was clear. The technocracy is in.
valianteffort··on Tesla appears to be building a teleoperations team for its robotaxi service
What is the point of making pretensious snob comments like this?

You are out of touch, less young people have their licenses than ever before. Car ownership, maintenance, and insurance are expensive. There is a huge market for people who would rather hail a robotaxi than buy a car. Companies like uber and lyft wouldn't be generating billions in revenue if that weren't the case.

valianteffort··on USFS decision to halt prescribed burns in California is history repeating
Why should CA budget to prevent forest fires when the federal government will just subsidize their natural disaster recovery?
valianteffort··on Elon Musk spent roughly $10B on AI training hardware in 2024
What a completely idiotic parallel to try and draw.
valianteffort··on The Broken Promise of USB-C: We'll Never Get a Universal Cable
>No, they all do it for cost reasons

You think this (incorrectly) because you're being either willfully ignorant or just naive. Apple have more insight on their devices and consumers than you could possibly imagine.

Apple know that practically no one connects their iPhone to a computer through the entire lifetime of the phone (less than 1%). So there is no reason they should include a USB3/4 cable when the only thing people do is charge their phone with it. It's added cost, and waste.

Likewise, the ports on their laptops often go unused. They collect anonymized data on how often people plug something in to any port on their device. They know what people are doing, and what is worth spending money on. There is a reason they got rid of their extra I/O to begin with.

valianteffort··on Elon Musk spent roughly $10B on AI training hardware in 2024
Our country (the US) was not designed for public transportation. Renting a car is fine if you never want to leave your suburb. Many people where I am at commute 100mi to the bay for work.

I think Elon's bet on driverless vehicles is stupid. It just won't work outside cities. Car culture in America isn't going anywhere.

valianteffort··on Ford to Halt F-150 Lightning Production as EV Demand Wanes
Where did I say growth? I said it was phenomenal. Funny how you just misinterpreted my comment to make your vapid retort.
valianteffort··on Ford to Halt F-150 Lightning Production as EV Demand Wanes
Tesla just had a phenomenal quarter so no, this is just the mediocre overpriced EV's being sold at a loss by legacy auto.
valianteffort··on What Musk Wants from American Politics
So Trump is now forever responsible for everything people he had previously employed say moving forward? That is the position you are taking?

If you're looking for things to judge a man by, let it be his own actions. Project 2025 is the Harris campaign grasping at straws in lieu of having any meaningful policy proposals. An attempt to sidestep the realities of the Biden admins reckless spending, most of which she voted on.

valianteffort··on What Musk Wants from American Politics
The forward is written by Kevin D. Roberts:

https://static.project2025.org/2025_MandateForLeadership_FUL...

I would hope in light of this new evidence, you would reconsider trusting whatever source told you that lie. But lets be honest you're going to look at this and dismiss it.

valianteffort··on What Musk Wants from American Politics
Stopped reading at "Project 2025". Anyone who actually thinks Trump is associated with that is clearly too stupid to make any meaningful point. It does not matter how much they try to pin it on him.

People who fall for propaganda this blatant genuinely concern me. Truly useful idiots.

valianteffort··on Apple may stop producing Vision Pro by the end of 2024
No they're just overspec'd and overpriced. If their goal was to ultimately release a consumer level device, they shouldn't have gone overboard with tech that has limited room for cost cutting.

It's typical of Apple's hubris, to throw in all these features they think people will want, meanwhile if the headset had no cameras and was just a display strapped to your head for $1000, it likely would have sold a lot better. But they didn't want a VR device for whatever reason.

At the same time you could blame discretionary spending being at some of the lowest levels in a decade.

valianteffort··on Using Euro coins as weights (2004)
The 1 JPY coin and (all?) USD bills are 1 gram exactly
valianteffort··on Tesla Robotaxi
There are countless videos on youtube of people recording their experience with FSD's open beta. It is probably 90% of the way there, if not more. Anyone who thinks Tesla won't get there first is peak delusional. Hate on Elon as much as you want, but Tesla are top-tier engineering.

Real funny seeing a bunch of web devs on HN talk shit about Tesla's engineers too lmao

valianteffort··on AAA Gaming on Asahi Linux
I played through the entirety of Elden Ring and its DLC on my macbook pro through GPTK which is a pretty modern and demanding game. Don't think that would be possible on asahi.
valianteffort··on Musk's Super Pac Offers $47 to Those Who Help It Find Trump Voters
Canvasing has been around forever. You've never had someone outside a grocery store ask you whether you're registered to vote?

Trump's 2016/2020 campaigns did less of these older methods of finding votes as, believe it or not, they were a fairly grassroots movement driven largely by the internet and rallies

valianteffort··on Google Listed as Sponsor, Host of Israeli Military Tech Conference
Probably a useful reminder to some that you don't hate google enough.

Degoogle your life everyone.

valianteffort··on UK public washing their clothes too often, says major laundry brand
We have ample land for landfills in the US, it is not cost effective to ship it to the third world.

The ganges is filled with bodies and trash unrelated to anything we are doing here in the US.

valianteffort··on I designed a Dieter Rams-inspired iPhone dock
I think prusa have been resting on their laurels and fallen very far behind. Bambu sort of raised the bar with their printers and the price points they are offered at. They took much of the tinkering out of the equation that filtered most people from producing quality prints.

If you're working with more exotic or engineering materials, it can still require a bit of work to dial in. But the most common like PLA, ABS, PETG will print without issue.

valianteffort··on Is Tor still safe to use?
Meanwhile you have ignored all other potential attack vectors. Fingerprinting (remarkable how little entropy it takes to identify an individual), zero-days that escape Tor's sandbox, etc. Why does Tor browser even ship with javascript enabled? Why aren't major fingerprinting features disabled a la carte?

The point is if you cannot assure anonymity with 100% certainty, you are simply setting people up.

valianteffort··on UK public washing their clothes too often, says major laundry brand
Every day we see some new article about how much of a complete piece of shit westerners are and if they just sacrifice this one luxury we will save the sea turtles.

I don't want to hear a thing until the largest polluters are reprimanded by world government first (india, SEA, africa). I have never thrown a piece of trash onto the ground let alone into a body of water to end up in a turtles stomach.

valianteffort··on Is Tor still safe to use?
Federal agencies operate enough exit nodes to make Tor use risky at best. I have no idea if they have since implemented some feature to prevent this but if not I would stay far away from Tor if you're planning to do illegal things. There's also the risk of trusting service operators to secure any PII you expose on marketplaces.

Not that I think the Fed's would blow their cover to hunt down people buying drugs but still seems stupid to trust.

valianteffort··on CATL launches ultra-high-energy-density EV bus battery that lasts ~1M miles
The energy density shown in the hero of the article makes it more likely LiFePO4.
valianteffort··on The Grand Tour has run out of road at last–is that why Clarkson&co look so happy
The writer seems to have a hard-on for Clarkson which sort of defines his whole opinion about the program.

I miss when writers made their bias less obvious.

valianteffort··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
Rakuten, temu, aliexpress, etc. are probably gaining concerning market share for amazon.

I cancelled prime years ago because if it's some mass produced chinese white label products you can get the same thing on ebay for cheaper let alone the aforementioned 3 for dirt cheap provided you don't care to wait a couple weeks.

Everyone is hawking the same slop, and although amazon can get it to me in a day, that's often not worth the premium.

valianteffort··on Dropped Cheetos Could Have Triggered Ecosystem Chaos in Largest US Cave Chamber
The scientific community is rife with pretentious know-it-all types. The type that draw conclusions before something is conclusive. Better not to take them seriously.

They recently built a cafe deep inside carlsbad caverns. If food was an issue, that seems a dumb idea.
