vages··on Uproar in France over award-winning author accused of using AI
Depends on how you define «they», but the public discourse in Norway the past two weeks have been defined by the Norwegian news outlet Manifest Media publishing a series of articles about AI “meat proxying”, starting whith an analysis of commentators employed by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK). The one found guilty was a white woman, and among the four non-guilty was one non-white man: https://www.manifestmedia.no/artikler/slik-testet-vi-nrk-for... A follow-up article targetting (white male) professor Asle Toje found that he had probably used AI to write a much-discussed opinion piece: https://www.manifestmedia.no/artikler/pangram-tojes-omstridt...

Race has not been a part of the public conversation. Not sure if it would have been that way if the guilty person was non-white (but I'm slightly optimistic, given that the first person found guilty was a woman and gender was not part of the discussion).

vages··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
Tips are taxed in Norway: https://snl.no/tips#:~:text=Tips%20er%20skattepliktig%20for%... Only a single digit percentage of customers pay with cash, so evasion is impractical.

It should also be said that restaurant staff in Norway make a much better living than in the US, both relative to other Norwegian workers and their US counterparts.

I'm also Scandinavian (Norwegian), and I never tip when going out.

I can't think of any long-term outcome of a tipping culture that is efficient for the workers and employers, even if the amount the customer tipped was correlated with quality (the research I've read shows it's got more to do with looks). It is simply more efficient that both parties know what they are agreeing to up front when (1) the worker still has to go to work for 3 months when they resign and (2) the employer has to pay them (and their replacement) full wages during training.

Could you elaborate? I just looked at the screenshots on https://www.apple.com/os/macos/, but did not see anything too different from the previous version.

What’s your source for this?

In terms of artistic quality, perhaps. In terms of expected future royalties, I think Queen would be an order of magnitude more valuable than most artists.

vages··on Migrating to the EU
Most of the articles I read about this is about showing that going all-European is possible at all. If that feels like it’s an us vs. them thing, I’m not sure how I could change your mind.
vages··on Show HN: s@: decentralized social networking over static sites
There’s room for both pragmatic and idealistic solutions in most cases. Sometimes the rules of the game change on short notice, and being in the right place at the right time makes all the difference.

While I see your point, I think AI may be banned in those universes for the same reason that time-travelling devices tend to be written out of sci-fi and fantasy: Stories are better without them. (If one counts the ever unfolding history of the world as a story, my counter-point actually validates your original point. Touché.)

Thanks for the Norwegian perspective.

I agree that the locking down is truly stupid. For what it’s worth, the reasoning for locking down mobile apps is allegedly that mobile users are a less technologically competent demographic than desktop users. I do not think so myself, given the difficulty in trying Graphene vs. Desktop Linux.

I really like how you have done things. Didn’t mind the waiting time.

Thank you for making my day a little brighter.

vages··on Two kinds of AI users are emerging
Which local AI do you use? I am local-curious, but don’t know which models to try, as people mention them by model name much less than their cloud counterparts.
vages··on Outsourcing thinking
I think that this summary is oversimplifying: The rest of the blog post elaborates on how the author and Masley has a completely different interpretation of that bullet point list. The rest of the text is not only examples; it provides elaborations of what thought processes led him to his conclusions. I found the nuancing of the two opposing interpretations, not the conclusion, the most enjoyable part of the post.

(This comment could also be shortened to “that’s oversimplifying”. I think my longer version is both more convincing and enjoyable.)

vages··on Developing a food-safe finish for my wooden spoons
Perhaps I’m naive, but buying from an IKEA (in Norway) or another big store feels less risky than buying something handmade.

Several people are involved in making every product at IKEA. At least one of them must be an expert in compliance. They can expect scrutiny and product recalls, fines and bad sales if they’re found out.

The one person making the hand-made spoon does not necessarily know all the environmental regulations that should be followed.

Anecdotally, I find early mover advantage to be overrated (ask anyone who bought Betamax or HD-DVD players). It is significantly cheaper – on average – to exploit what you already know and learn from the mistakes of other, earlier movers.
