vadym909··on Uber CEO says its service will probably shut down temporarily in California
Great- I think this will bring forth the root cause of the problem which is employer tied benefits and employer tied taxes. Right now there are entire business models based on avoiding taxes and benefits.

You can have protections like min wage, sick leave, etc and still make it really simple os that evvery individual pays the entire tax (employer and employee payroll taxes) for every dollar they earn. It can be scaled based on annual amounts just like they are now. It'll be transparent and everyone will pay it.

vadym909··on Mozilla lays off 250 employees while it refocuses on commercial products
"But we know we also need to go beyond the browser to give people new products and technologies that both excite them and represent their interests"

I was a loyal Firefox user and can't even remember why I switched to Chrome. Sometimes shit happens. Kohler can be all ecited about making the next great toilet bowl. Just don't expect me to get excited every morning to go take a poop on that bowl. It's an impossibly high standard!

vadym909··on Airbnb Plans to File Confidentially for IPO in August
I didn't know this was a thing until my friend said he stayed in a guest room of a small country's embassy in SF that the host probably never had permission to rent out.
vadym909··on Twilio Acquires Electric Imp
Its an American cultural norm- which often seems 'fake' or 'posing' to Europeans, S.Americans or Asians who are little more reserved and stingy expressing such levels of sentiment.

It was a shock to me when I started interviewing for jobs- and an American friend told me, its very important in the US, when interviewing to say "I'm really excited (more than you really are) about the opportunity to work at XYZ." The truth could be you hate the company or are ambivalent- but if you don't say you are absolutely excited- the assumption is you are not interested and therefore will be passed over for someone who is 'truly excited'.

vadym909··on Chicago will now require food delivery apps to disclose itemized cost breakdown
Just not fair /s

More important as Uber tries to monopolize the space by buying GrubHub. These delivery companies are going to encourage fly-by-night/cloud kitchen operators to increase their margins and reduce prices on the already hurting restaurants. Wish a not-for-profit platform for delivery existed that didn't squeeze the maker or the delivery driver.

vadym909··on Elon Musk reopening Tesla factory despite Alameda County order
I'd love to hear black or brown people adopt this as their motto.
vadym909··on Elon Musk reopening Tesla factory despite Alameda County order
I would have no problem with Elon deciding to launch himself with a rocket, but I'm worried about workers who don't have an option and are doing it because they have to. The only thing I can think of to offset this risk is that Elon commits to pay $1M or a lifelong salary to the dependents of any worker that does catch the Covid-19 due to working during these times and dies (or infects their at-home relative who die) and lifelong health insurance should tey fall sick and be unable to work.
vadym909··on Why is the stock market rallying when the economy is so bad?
This makes a lot of sense but then shouldn't this apply to stocks like Netflix or Peloton. That once the people get back to work and gyms, these companies will struggle to grow as fast and in a way face permanent damage till the next pandemic?
vadym909··on Why is the stock market rallying when the economy is so bad?
Ofcourse a small portion will always be ambitious, enterprising and expect to join the 10%. But we are all convinced (and I assumed this too) that the stock gains are good because it helps average Americans increase their 401k, but the stock ownership ratio is so skewed to affect the majority. If the stock market crashed, it wouldn't really afffect most American's net worth which is so interesting? I'm sure companies will shut down and there's be trickle down job losses but that can happen in stock boom times too (like now). A quick Google search showed where this number comes from https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/08/business/economy/stocks-e...
vadym909··on Why is the stock market rallying when the economy is so bad?
I'm surprised the average Americans (the 90%) don't get that they are providing insurance to the 86% wealth of the top 10%, but get almost none of the gains.
vadym909··on California sues Uber and Lyft, claiming workers are misclassified
Whats the difference between dependent contractor and W2? What do they get and what do they don't?
vadym909··on Amazon.com Announces First Quarter Results
This may be cynical, but I think this was a PR focused earning to offer better optics.

I think they absolutely had to say something to placate the rising tide of voices against their monopoly and for their contribution to so many retailers' downfall- even without COVID. This will earn them some brownie points as in "Oh- AMZN's sales went up but at least they were not gouging- they invested all their profit in improving their service and employee benefits"

vadym909··on BR Shetty: The rise and fall of a billionaire
Seems like Muddy Waters Research has been dong this successfully for a while. Seems like Ehealth is their latest target, interesting model.

Is there a similar model for common investors to benefit from such research instead of just hedge fund (big) investors alone.

vadym909··on Amazon asks workers sheltering at home to return or request leave
Ah ok- I stand corrected - the medical is pretty reasonable. The 401k match takes 3 years to vest.
vadym909··on A Third Solution
An inadvertant Masterclass on how to convince a non-technical audience to invest in a tech startup. - Take a huge and important problem - Show the current challenges/lack of solutions - Propose a 'radical' alternative - Lend credence to the competency of the team - 'How world can be saved' - Imply the resultant victory
vadym909··on Amazon asks workers sheltering at home to return or request leave
I'd be really surprised if these were real- '401(k), health, vision, and dental benefits'. Anyone can offer 401k without matching, medical without contributing to the premium.
vadym909··on Oil plunges below zero for first time with May contract ending
Would this slow down the move to electric cars? If gas is so cheap, it takes away one of the major advantages.
vadym909··on AngelList lays off a number of staff and cuts executive salaries
yup- just like Trump predicted- a Miracle!
vadym909··on Fed reinstates multi-trillion dollar bailout program for Wall Street
Why would it disappear. It would be auctioned off to the lowest bidder- maybe the debtor itself.
vadym909··on Casper lowers IPO price range, implying valuation of just over $500M
I think it points to how the public markets are getting better or were always good at spotting when a mattress maker claiming to be Tech/Mattress as a Service doesn't justify the multiples. So the trend of high priced rounds meeting IPO reality continues.
vadym909··on Lime shuts in 12 markets, lays off around 100
anda great entryway for a budding insurance startup to get customers
vadym909··on JobFunnel, a job website search aggregator
Unfortunately, a job search aggregator assumes that companies religiously post new jobs. The reality is when a company wants to hire it 'may' post a job to cover it butt in case of an EEO complaint. Mostly they have internal candidates, internally referred candidates, retained recruiters, applicants from career website who all rank above an external job site. My guess is a very low percentage of jobs actually get filled by job aggegator sites. imho The number of applicants from these sites is just too much, far less qualified and trusted compared to other sources.
vadym909··on Interpol issues 'red notice' for Carlos Ghosn's arrest
Fascinating- I'd go watch the movie. Rags to Riches Hero becoming too successful- targeted by Big Foreign Govt on cooked up charges escaping persecution and going home to safety.
vadym909··on California’s Assembly Bill 5 came for me today
Consider yourself collateral damage- just like full-time employees were when companies decided to hire ICs and not pay them benefits.

The real problem unfortunately lies in the fact that the Govt decided the best way to provide people benefits was through the employer.

vadym909··on California's new gig economy law could put freelancers out of business
That is the point of the law. If you want to work exclusively for one company, you are not a freelancer- you are an employee and the company owes employer taxes for you. They don't get off and you don't get to ask for relief for them using the "they will terminate my contract". If that is allowed, every industry will find a way to start using freelancers instead of employees. Which is fine if you so desire, but then you have to re-jig how taxes like social security, unemployment insurance and workers comp are collected and worker protections like min wages and overtime are enforced. Else you are just allowing for a few tax dodgers from benefiting at the expense of everyone else.
vadym909··on How to pack a Norwegian sandwich, the world’s most boring lunch
Many folks eat just 2 meals a day- a big heavy breakfast and a day's end dinner and it works fine for them. Lunch is just a silly ritual- if you get it - take it by all means but don't assume those who don't take it are suffering!
vadym909··on Nearly half of white Harvard students are athletes/children of alumni/donors
Its not all desert. Half of Lake Tahoe area is Nevada and pretty nice mountains and water.
vadym909··on Gatsby raises $15M Series A for its modern web development platform
busted!
vadym909··on Kik, once valued at $1B, is to be closed
Poor Fred Wilson. He tried hard to hawk this one, including a crypto hail mary but evidently there's still some sanity in the private markets!
