v7p1Qbt1im··on Trump wins presidency for second time
That‘s the fault of capitalism. Which the right supports even harder than the democratic party (which also completely supports it).
v7p1Qbt1im··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
I think people don't actively notice most of these things. But they sure as hell notice when you take them away after. A good example of this is ProMotion. People don't notice high refresh rate when they first get a Pro. but they do notice when you use it for a few weeks and then go back to 60hz. Same for a lot of other things.
v7p1Qbt1im··on Microsoft stock drops over 6% after results fall short in AI disappointment
They use both. Especially for their cloud customers. They offer Cloud GPU as well as Cloud TPU as a service on Google Cloud.
v7p1Qbt1im··on Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames
I‘ll take it. Even offline backups would be an improvement.

For people worried about having not consented to other peoples backup. They could implement ephemeral-only chats, or backup-excluded chats where both parties have to agree to changes.

v7p1Qbt1im··on Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames
Nice. Now please finally give us iOS cloud backups before i break or loose my phone and years of conversations get evaporated.
v7p1Qbt1im··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
Or auto-reject.
v7p1Qbt1im··on Passkeys are now enabled by default for Google users
> Passkeys are not cross-vendor transferable!

They are when using a third party password manager like 1password or dashlane. At least in they are device agnostic. Haven‘t yet tried to export a passkey to another manager.

v7p1Qbt1im··on Apple exec Eddy Cue set to testify in Google trial about $19B search deal
> people will just change it back to Google in the settings

No they wouldn‘t. A lot of testing and (probably?) research has shown that a massive amount of regular normie users will never change any defaults of any kind. Many would probably not even notice what search engine they‘re using. Defaults are incredibly powerful. They would easily accept a marginally worse product.

v7p1Qbt1im··on Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
Would be cool once they would allow geforce now. Plug in phone to display, connect mouse/keyboard and play AAA games at 4K60+.
v7p1Qbt1im··on USENET rises again?
For some of us usenet never died. Use cases might have changed though. Iykyk.
v7p1Qbt1im··on Apple TV prompt requires another Apple device
A media player like nvidia shield or apple tv is just a lot more performant and gets updated for ages. TV firmware mostly gets abandoned when the next generation releases. The interface gets laggy and slow very quickly.

Also, some people have Plex/Kodi setups with a NAS. Not fun to try to play UHD Bluray remuxes on a TV directly.

v7p1Qbt1im··on Stadia died because no one trusts Google
It‘s really a pity. Unfortunately the gaming market is so difficult to penetrate. It took MS decades and endless amounts of money. And it’s really shitty for cloud gaming prospects. Likely MS will take it all over the long term and there will be a lack of competition in the space.

Stadia was so far ahead technically. They just needed to invest 15 years and 100 billion in studios and a sub model. Gaming and cloud will be the future. And now they lost one them. I get that it’s really difficult to justify loss leaders for that long but you kind a have to in this case.

It’s funny that Google became so risk averse over the years while MS is just taking massive gambles and spending like they don’t have a care in the world. And MS seems to be doing the right things for them somehow.

v7p1Qbt1im··on Manhattan rents cross $5k threshold for first time
Exactly. Wealthy residents should at some point realize that culture and entertainment venues/options are (often) created by lower income residents. If that disappears you get soulless places which are dramatically less fun to live in. Not to mention the service industry workers, who also need to come from somewhere.
v7p1Qbt1im··on Alphabet Announces Fourth Quarter and Fiscal Year 2021 Results
On iOS you can use adguard or blokada and integrate it into Safari.
v7p1Qbt1im··on Colors in movies and TV: What happened to them?
I never had this feeling. Especially in the first one. You basically have the Balin‘s tomb scene and Amon Hen at the end. It never felt drawn out to me.
v7p1Qbt1im··on Colors in movies and TV: What happened to them?
I also watched an unhealthy amount of behind-the-scenes for lotr.

Peter Jackson mentioned that there is a thing called „Battle fatigue“. Battles should focus on the the main characters and their journey through a battle. Otherwise battle scenes could get boring or repetitive really quickly.

Also it‘s cheaper, as someone else said.

v7p1Qbt1im··on Why Apple’s iMessage is winning: teens dread the green text bubble
They would have done that ages ago I think. They could have made the „default“ Android messaging app similar to iMessage.

But couldn‘t because they needed to keep the OEMs (mostly Samsung) and regulators at bay. Android needed to be open in the beginning so Google could catch up and overtake iOS. But obviously there are drawbacks (from their perspective) if you don‘t control the whole ecosystem including hardware.

v7p1Qbt1im··on San Francisco's homelessness is a humanitarian crisis
No. This reframing of the issue is incredibly reductive. The best thing you can do for homeless people us provide them with housing. Shocking I know.

Once they have housing — no strings attached housing — you need to provide health care (mental/physical). Now they have a chance to get reintegrated into society.

But without permanent housing nothing is going to happen.

Having said this, of course drug problems are extremely prevalent among the homeless population. It‘s rarely ever the root cause of the homelessness though. Maybe they had an accident or illness and were prescribed opioids frivolously and for too long. After they are sandbagged with crippling medical dept they are addicted and can‘t pay for their expenses at the same time.

Also, living on the street in extreme poverty is terrible and bleak. So no wonder one would end up depressed and start using even more opioids to mentally escape.

v7p1Qbt1im··on Decreasing service fees on subscriptions to 15%
Apple now moved on this by the smallest possible amount. They‘ll allow media apps (like Netflix and Spotify) to link to their own payment system on the web. Though the details aren‘t quite clear afaik.
v7p1Qbt1im··on Brave Search replaces Google as default search engine in the Brave browser
I doubt it would do much good to have a ban list. An entire industry is singularly focused on gaming search engines to promote whatever. It just so happens that blogspam sites are incredibly profitable in aggregate.
v7p1Qbt1im··on Senet
I remember getting the game as part of a collectors edition of the show LOST. Used to play it quite a bit.
v7p1Qbt1im··on Branson and crew reach space, return in runway landing
I’m not really familiar with US tax laws tbh. But even if you can’t you would only ever need to liquidate equity to pay the interest. Only those payouts would count as income.

Maybe an accountant can chime in.

v7p1Qbt1im··on Branson and crew reach space, return in runway landing
You can yeah. But you’re not gonna get anywhere near the rates/types of loans you can get as a billionaire.
v7p1Qbt1im··on Branson and crew reach space, return in runway landing
Not really. They just get loans at incredibly low interest rates, using their equity as collateral.

They can deduct dept/interest payments from taxes and never actually have to sell a lot of their stock. That way their wealth can accumulate and they don‘t really generate income. Almost like the tax code is skewed in their favor.

v7p1Qbt1im··on Apple brings Safari web browser extensions to iPhone and iPad with iOS 15
Many of these are already usable via other OS features:

Ad guard: download the app and integrate it as a content blocker in safari options. I’ve been using it for a long time. It offers a lot of features.

Password managers: can also be integrated in the OS itself by installing the app and set the config.

v7p1Qbt1im··on LSD, cargo shorts and the fall of a tech CEO
You can act quite normally when microdosing.

If dosed correctly (it takes time to find it and depends on the person) micro-dosing (usually around 5 - 20 ug per dose) an obvious effect in not as apparent as you might expect.

For me, 5 to 10 is enough. I don‘t actually want to feel the body high when microdosing. Precisely because it should feel like a normal day. Except your perception, creativity and emotional balance is heightened.

v7p1Qbt1im··on Microsoft buys Nuance for nearly $20B
100% they tried. Can‘t imagine Google and Amazon not wanting GitHub.

But with regards to big acquisitions, MS is ironically and quite surprisingly able to fly under the radar in terms of antitrust. Literally every other tech company is not.

v7p1Qbt1im··on Fitbit is doomed: Here's why everything Google buys turns to garbage (2019)
Oh. I wasn‘t aware. Good to know, thx. That seems like an oversight.
v7p1Qbt1im··on Fitbit is doomed: Here's why everything Google buys turns to garbage (2019)
Even if Google were to actually sell data (which they don‘t and never have. Selling targeting is way more profitable). They straight up legally couldn’t with health data because of regulation like HIPAA.
v7p1Qbt1im··on The new Google Pay repeats all the same mistakes of Google Allo
Banking infrastructure is pretty terrible by default. Almost everywhere. It‘s 2021, instantaneous transactions should be the default. If you send a SEPA payment in Europe (most modern standard) it still takes one business day. And intercontinental transactions take even longer.

I get the whole interbank exchange weirdness, but still. Banks basically transfer money akin to using analogue switchboards.
