v7n··on The early days of Linux
Perhaps you missed the words "release event" being a hyperlink to this rather short clip on YouTube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaDpjlFpbfo

Edit: Decided to add a link to a Finnish-language 27 minute documentary of Linus (21.1.1998) so this isn't just a duplicate comment.

v7n··on Nvidia RTX Remix Runtime Open Source Available Now
MP 1 & 2 remakes are in the works by Remedy

v7n··on Microsoft to change PrintScreen button to open the Snipping Tool in Windows 11
Except in Outlook because one beta tester does not like it.

v7n··on The electric vehicles we need now are e-bikes (2022)
The form factor of the PEBL looks about right, but with the $10k price tag it's not there quite yet.
v7n··on We are hurtling toward a glitchy, spammy, scammy, AI-powered internet
The improvements would be in the empowerment, not replacement of human moderators. That is to flag undesired or AI-generated content for further investigation, for example. Surely there will be communities that will try to actually automate it to their own demise as well.

My second point was, crudely, that I believe there to be people who would rather read a good book (or insightful comment or whatever) written by an "AI" than a bad one written by a Human.

v7n··on We are hurtling toward a glitchy, spammy, scammy, AI-powered internet
Probably. These AI advances will also improve moderation (and censorship) of human discussions at scale.

As a tangent I'd imagine there will always be communities where the qualities of a comment/post/content itself are valued more than the presumed qualities of a CertifiedHumanUser whose handle is attached to it. As a personal indifference, the claim "a real human made this" generally adds little value.

v7n··on The electric vehicles we need now are e-bikes (2022)
The space required to safely operate a bicycle is not equal to the width of the vehicle in the first place. The article, in its second paragraph already mentions cargo bikes which often have the tri-wheel configuration.
v7n··on The electric vehicles we need now are e-bikes (2022)
I'd love to see recumbent e-trikes with lights, turn signals, and sufficient composite cover to be a viable commute option regardless of rain or freezing temperature. With assisted pedalling it should be possible to maintain comfortable temperature for a good while if the insulation is done right.
v7n··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
As an example, this bi-directional HDMI switch allows you to either connect 2 devices to 1 monitor, or 1 device to 2 monitors and switch with a button on top. https://cdn.nedis.com/images/products_high_res/VSWI3482AT_P6...
v7n··on We need better support for SSH host certificates
OOB: ".. during the SSH protocol’s authentication phase, the Tailscale SSH server already knows who the remote party is and takes over, not requiring the SSH client to provide further proof (using the SSH authentication type none)." https://tailscale.com/kb/1193/tailscale-ssh/#how-does-it-wor...
v7n··on We need better support for SSH host certificates
That is also the flow for Tailscale SSH

v7n··on Show HN: BBC “In Our Time”, categorised by Dewey Decimal, heavy lifting by GPT
Bit of a tangent but I also predict an explosive demand for parametric AI-first design and simulation software.

OpenSCAD works right now in the sense that the produced source is valid, but asking for even something well documented e.g. an AR-15 lower receiver does not impress.

v7n··on High level mods/patches for console video games
With C achieved, aren't even higher level languages within reach? I would imagine interpreting scripting languages (middleman Wasm runtime?) isn't an enormous undertaking and would make such modding more approachable.
v7n··on 1491: New revelations of the Americas before Columbus (2005)
Going with The Meme[0], Constantine XI[1] was the last Byzantine emperor until his death and the Fall of Constantinople in 1453. The line of succession, ignoring dead empires and bought titles, is supposedly brother (Thomas) > nephew (Andreas, son of Thomas) > niece (Zoe, sister of Andreas) > Grand Prince of Moscow (Ivan III, through marriage with Zoe) > Tsar of the Russian Empire (grandson of Ivan III)

v7n··on Show HN: Hexagon Pattern Generator
I am unsure if it has anything to do with hexagons, but the majority of these patterns remind me of gift wrappings. Maybe it's just the season.
v7n··on Dear Linux, Privileged Ports Must Die
Considering the origins of Linux I don't think joke is all there is to it. It would not surprise me at all if there were multiple such systems still maintained in Finnish universities; quite the opposite.
v7n··on Copyright infringement in AI art
In case you, or others here, have not encountered it yet: https://openai.com/blog/jukebox/
v7n··on Show HN: Teapodo (Lightweight Audio Editor) Now Supports VST/AU Plugins
I suggest Voicemod. It has a free version or one-time paid license for more customization and "AI Voices". Very easy to set up and use.
