v5v3··on Why Is Fertility So Low in High Income Countries? (NBER)
Not 18, obviously.

But ideally a woman should be having a first child before 30 so a second and possibly 3rd in early 30s.

A large percentage of marriages end in divorce. Stability is statistically an illusion.

v5v3··on Why Is Fertility So Low in High Income Countries? (NBER)
>should not fall for the temptation to launch embarrassing campaigns to rise the fertility rate.

Entire generations of women have been told that it is ok to delay having children into late 30s and early 40s.

The science clearly shows that both fertility rate and increase of an unhealthy baby increase with age.

There should be 'embarassing campaigns' to revert this.

v5v3··on Why Is Fertility So Low in High Income Countries? (NBER)
>more to do with attitude and life style priorities

Which are values 'sold' to them via the media.

v5v3··on Why Is Fertility So Low in High Income Countries? (NBER)
The high income countries can continue to attract an endless supply of pre-manufactured labour resources from lower income countries, so are not manufacturing it at home.
v5v3··on Show HN: Pangolin – Open source alternative to Cloudflare Tunnels
What's Newt?
v5v3··on Postgres LISTEN/NOTIFY does not scale
Better to be successful with simple tech and have a minor 'blow up', then over engineer and go bust.
v5v3··on Postgres LISTEN/NOTIFY does not scale
Isn't Kafka the Postgresql of pub/sub

I.e. use Kafka unless you have a explicit reason not to?

So why Nats?

v5v3··on Multi-Region Row Level Security in CockroachDB
Haven't looked at their offering but a lot of cloud managed db's charge per dB rather than a virtual server grouping.

So there will be a cost per dB A cost to backup that dB Etc

And so a lot of companies, particularly startup, will keep one large dB.

v5v3··on Show HN: Petrichor – a free, open-source, offline music player for macOS
Roon is well regarded but it's paid for and not open source.
v5v3··on Show HN: Petrichor – a free, open-source, offline music player for macOS
Why isn't it signed properly though.
v5v3··on Multi-Region Row Level Security in CockroachDB
>You Shall Not Pass: Fine Grained Access Control with Row Level Security

When you rug pulled your license, I could not pass.

I'm sure it will be useful to your paying clients, who may be using RLS on their other DBs.

v5v3··on End-to-End News Sentiment Pipeline with Serverless AWS, DuckDB and Streamlit
The well written ReadMe is appreciated.
v5v3··on Grok 4 Launch [video]
Public as the Ai response is often used to mediate two opposing submissions of facts.

A neutral 3rd party.

v5v3··on Grok 4 Launch [video]
@AskPerplexity is also on x
v5v3··on Grok 4 Launch [video]
Other AI companies post a 5 minute article to read.

This is a 50 minute long video, many won't bother to watch

v5v3··on Grok 4 Launch [video]
You have to have a high RRP to negotiate any volume deals down from.

Like the other AI companies, they will want to sign up companies.

v5v3··on Ask HN: New RevOps guy wants to switch us from M365 to GSuite+Slack
As he is Rev Ops, can you switch Sales to Google and slack first?

They can keep Teams alongside Slack to talk to others.

Then if revenue increases do the rest.

v5v3··on Smollm3: Smol, multilingual, long-context reasoner LLM
Thanks
v5v3··on Ask HN: Do you use LLM for HTML translations?
>Or has any insight of a better performing API/LLM for this problem ?

Most browser's have built in translation and ive never needed any other.

Can you run a translation in chrome, capture the API it sends to/translates page and then just use that?

v5v3··on Bulgaria to join euro area on 1 January 2026
On the one hand, countries with different economic strengths having the same currency managed centrally isn't ideal.

But on the other hand, anything that reduces the domination of the US dollar is welcome.

v5v3··on WebAssembly: Yes, but for What?
Has VsCode support for c# improved or are you still paying $1k a year or so for Visual Studio?
v5v3··on WebAssembly: Yes, but for What?
Why do you think that? I wrote a webhook recieving API the other day in Rust.

And it's my go-to for anything that isn't front end/web framework.

It has lots of packages now. And can be extended further as it can call other languages modules such as Python.

v5v3··on NuxtLabs is joining Vercel
That's a shame.

So now Nuxt joins Next in the never to use pile.

v5v3··on WebAssembly: Yes, but for What?
> focused on trying to effectively rewrite the JVM in Rust because Rust seems trendy these days.

Rust isn't 'trendy' it's established itself as a leading language.

It's also not controlled by a single corporate like Google (go) or Sun (java) or Microsoft (C#,F#) or Apple (Swift) so a better place to be.

v5v3··on Minister demands overhaul of UK's leading AI institute
Didn't realise that the Alan Turing Institute was government funded.
v5v3··on TapTrap: Animation-Driven Tapjacking on Android
GrapheneOS posted they are putting in a fix for this.

When will Android?

v5v3··on LLMs should not replace therapists
A therapist isn't 'there for you'.

He or she has a daily list if clients, ten mins before they will brush up on someone they doesn't remember since last week. And it's isn't in their financial interest to fix you.

And human intelligence and life experience isn't distributed equally, many therapists have passed the training but are not very good.

Same way lots of Devs with a degree aren't very good.

Llms are not there yet but if keep developing could become excellent, and will be consistent. Lots already talk to ChatGPT orally.

The big if, is whether the patient is willing to accept a non human.

v5v3··on LLMs should not replace therapists
Llms potentially will do a far better job.

One benefit of many - A therapist is 1 hour a week session or similar. An Llm will be there 24/7.

v5v3··on I don't think AGI is right around the corner
It would put people out of their 'current jobs' which many of them hate and only do to pay the bills.

A lot of people would be far happier and would find something better to do with their day if universal income came along.

Take developers as an example, many don't enjoy the corporate CRUD apps they do.

v5v3··on I don't think AGI is right around the corner
Thats nice to know.

What's that got to do with this post though.
