uvatbc··on Ask HN: Do you keep a developer diary?
I keep daily status logs to remind myself of the work that I have done because that's the only way I can put a stop to the nagging anxiety that I haven't done enough.

A nice side effect is that weekly status meetings are easy.

A simple markdown formatted file is more than enough.

uvatbc··on Makefile hacks: print the value of any variable (2010)
I hesitate to divert the topic, however: I'm working in a startup that has a solution to three of these shortcomings. We're not publicly available yet, but we are interested in anyone who'd want to try us out.
uvatbc··on Show HN: Qt binding for Go with support for all major operating systems
tl;dr: sometimes the UI can be written in a different language.

Qt used to have an XML markup language that auto generated C++ UI code.

Later, QML was introduced - which is a JavaScript based UI runtime.

There are Qt bindings for other languages, for example Python. So you could write business logic in Python and UI in QML.

uvatbc··on Visual Studio 2017 Update now available for download
I don't know if there's any Microsoft employees reading this, but if there are any: I'd pay to have a Visual Studio that works on Linux. No, not that browser based Visual Studio Code, the real one.

Rocket Chat (https://github.com/RocketChat) is a totally OSS Slack alternative.
uvatbc··on If we build it, why would anyone care?
As far as I know, having an "exit strategy" is a way to ensure that the founder(s) have a planned far enough to know if this idea->product->business is one that can stand on its own feet or is it one that can only survive as a part of a much larger company. Are those who have an exit strategy necessarily worse than someone who has none? What does my being in Silicon Valley have anything to do with it? If I sound indignant, it is because blanket criticism almost never captures any nuance.

Exit strategies are like any other tool: Used well, they discipline the founder's thoughts and help maintain focus in the team. Used badly, they're likely to set the worst example for the team, for other founders and for people outside the Silicon Valley.

uvatbc··on LineageOS: Infrastructure Status and Official Builds
I just sent an email to the contact address on the linked LineageOS site but after reading the latest comments on this story, I thought I might as well gauge HN's interest in what we're doing in my startup.

We have a platform that is capable of reducing compilation times significantly. We've already proven it for a few projects: the Linux kernel, qemu, Qt, etc.

What I'd like to know is if there are people who'd be interested in such a platform as a service?

uvatbc··on Portions of the brain fall asleep and wake back up all the time
I'd like to extrapolate this further: We won't have true AI until mankind explains the human brain as a "form of AI"
uvatbc··on Ask HN: What do you wish someone would build?
I found GrepPage pretty interesting: https://www.greppage.com/
