I am comparing PHP Frameworks vs Ruby on Rails because that is a closer and more relevant comparison.

PHP frameworks such as Codeigniter are dead simple to use. They do not have the deployment, scaling, and performance headaches that Ruby On Rails has.

I don't get why people worship ROR, maybe because it is the original MVC framework.

Why hate on PHP when the popular and most successful website runs on it (facebook, yahoo, flickr, wikipedia, digg)?

The only mainstream ROR sites is Twitter which is still buggy even though it is 50x simpler than Facebook. I wouldn't put Basecamp into that category yet.

Should remove the oversize dollar sign on the font page or move the pricing details into another page.

Feels like the customer are getting pushed to buy too quickly.

Something like this is less pushy http://macromates.com/.

utsmokingaces··on The Real Secret of Thoroughly Excellent Companies
"Michael practices proximity management. Every month he meets informally with each employee group. No agenda. No speeches. Just conversation. That helps him solve problems"

Isn't this basic job of the manager? Why do academics and industry label common sense with lame terms?

utsmokingaces··on Goodbye Facebook
I don't know why but i laugh really hard at

"Instead of scouring my friends' friends' photos for other possible friends, I could have been raising money for Darfur relief"

One way for facebook to be a bit useful is to gain 1000s of "friends" and create a group or app to raise awareness or money for your cause.

I only have a handful of real friend so I don't feel ashamed of marketing to fb friends especially if it is for a good cause.

utsmokingaces··on My visit to American Apparel
I wrote "Have you seen their clothing? They are bland and tasteless." Not t-shirt.

I'm glad you are satisfied with your plain $20 t-shirt http://store.americanapparel.net/men-short-sleeves---t-shirt... based on it's fit and comfort.

In my subjective view, it just makes me sick to see American Apparel in other countries and people go in and see that "Americans" are about looking like 1970s high schoolers. Like it our not this brand does represent us.

utsmokingaces··on My visit to American Apparel
You are trying to get into the ethics of global trade. I am sure glad I can get a plain t-shirt for $6 instead of $20 for AA. But that is a long debate.

Checkout http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zara_%28clothing%29 They are a Spanish company that do not outsource their manufacturing. They are able to keep their costs down and deliver the most trendy clothes to their customers. AA on the other hand made clothes that look like 1970s gym clothes.

utsmokingaces··on My visit to American Apparel
Having a logo or not has nothing to do with the fact AA looks ugly as hell. Many great clothing brands do not show their logos on some of their clothes.

"I don't want to pay for the privilege of wearing a billboard."

Your are paying $20 for a plain grey t-shirt. You don't think you are paying for the AA billboards that are everywhere??

utsmokingaces··on My visit to American Apparel
Have you seen their clothing? They are bland and tasteless. They are wal-mart clothes for 3x the price.

Having "American" in this brand will make countries laugh at how unsophisticated we are.

You are going to make something in America at least make something good like New Balance. We don't care to known for making neon green tights.

utsmokingaces··on Ask HN: What to do in an equity disagreement in a startup
Ask for 20% or even more. Ownership is not everything it is the ONLY thing! If you are the sole developer, a indispensable part of the startup, you should be able to get you fair share. Stop all work until you do.

Starting work before the official incorporation can be a good thing if you can show that you are a damn good developer. Having a mba degree and being knowledgeable in "entrepreneurship" and "technology" doesn't mean shit in this arena.

Anyone tell me the advantages of using .NET for a scrappy web startup?

I learn to develope in ASP.NET in college and found that finding support online is quite difficult (damn gridview).

With the maturity of Django, RoR, and PhP frameworks is it worth it to find a bizspark partner and pay microsoft tax until the your business dies?

utsmokingaces··on Microsoft is in talks to acquire Yahoo’s online search business for $20 billion
http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/11/29/reports-of-new-microsof...

This is a false story.

utsmokingaces··on Microsoft is in talks to acquire Yahoo’s online search business for $20 billion
Buying only the search business is an awful awful deal. The new search business will still reside in yahoo's web properties. Yahoo will definitely neglect the m$ search advertising in favor of luring consumers to its display ads. This is like saying you are going to adopt a kid from a foster home and leaving her there.

Yahoo's strength is in its content not search. Paying 20B (which is more than the market value of yahoo) for search market share just doesn't make sense.

utsmokingaces··on Man Vs. Machine On Wall Street
The Financial market is not a complex calculation. It is a derivative of human emotion and psychology. In the end humans will try to manipulate the computers. The best investors such as buffet and soros are not math whizes. They take qualitative and quantitive approach to their investment.

Sounds like a major fail to me.
