uses··on Microsoft’s Q4 earnings and 2020 expectations
I'd imagine most HNers are aware that MS owns the world's social code platform as well as the hottest general purpose editor. That mind share counts for an awful lot compared to like, 3 years ago.
uses··on Ross Perot Has Died
What a quaint time when the oddball outsider candidate was a mentally stable human being calmly explaining ideas in a way anybody could understand.

ITT: "but the real fake news is the lying MSM!", etc.
uses··on iPadOS
As a web developer, what on earth does this mean?

> desktop sites are now the default in Safari

Surely it's not some kind of meddling with the device width to make responsive web design even more confusing. That would be very odd.

My hope is that it's some kind of user agent manipulation that thwarts device sniffing so you don't see a mobile phone stylesheet or get redirected to a mobile site while using your iPad.

uses··on Public Sans – A strong, neutral typeface for text or display
> Is Sans Serif Fonts the department where the US government can really make a difference

Isn't this a pretty basic "appeal to worse problems" fallacy?

uses··on 80% of the Web Powered by PHP (2017)
Probably worth noting that WP is planning on requiring PHP 7 by the end of 2019 https://make.wordpress.org/core/2018/12/08/updating-the-mini...
uses··on China's social network surveillance databases are apparently leaked to Internet
Just leaving aside for a second what a crime against humanity this surveillance is...

It never ceases to amaze me how many of these massive data leaks are simply "mongodb in default configuration".

I just don't understand how it was thought, at any point in time, to be a good idea that mongodb in its default configuration, would be open to the world with no authentication.

uses··on Google is discontinuing Inbox
I don't know why this surprises me but this just feels weird.

I felt like Inbox was the product that I was supposed to get on board with. It really is true that you just can't love google products. They make it freaking impossible.

uses··on OCR Software Dev Exposes 200k Customer Documents
Another MongoDB misconfiguration, wow. How is it still so easy to configure mongo with no creds and an open port? Feels like these alone cause a large % of data leaks.

If I was running a cloud platform of such a massive scale I'd probably scan my own ports to identify glaring problems like this one. Kind of surprising that isn't happening considering how bad it is to have the brand associated with a report like this.

uses··on Twenty-two states ask appeals court to bring back net neutrality
Where did this new anti-NN talking point come from about how, if we're going to have net neutrality then we also need to allow people to be terrible on social media without taking responsibility for it? I swear I've seen this so many times in the past few months, including multiple comments in this thread. If moderation of corporate software platforms is an important issue for you, great, but surely you can see the difference between that and NN? Attempting to conflate the two looks pretty disingenuous and I'm pretty inclined to think it's some kind of culture war talking point.
uses··on Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook hearing was a sham
> Note how many of the senators who voted to expand surveillance programs and the NSA became suddenly very concerned for privacy

Ok but even from their perspective, and I'm trying to not give too much credit here, but there is a difference between giving specific, authorized government agencies a blank check to spy on whoever they want to in order to achieve their mission of national security, and giving a blank check to any company that wants to collect unlimited information and surveillance on its users in order to accomplish whatever goal it desires. They're very different questions even though they both involve personal privacy.

"Make the most important thing stand out"

I'd be careful with this one and be sure you understand what you are doing on a case-by-case basis. I have noticed a thing which I'm not sure there's a name for, but I call it Emphasis Blindness.

Similar to Banner Blindness, I think users today are often trained by habit to ignore things that stand out as some kind of obvious promotional item.

For example, you have 5 items in your navigation: Process Company News Blog Shop, and Shop is the most important, right? So you put it in some kind of special placement, and give it a button-like appearance with a special color and an outline. That doesn't necessarily make it easier to see! In some cases your users might just be looking through the "normal" navigation and not see "Shop". They will skip right over your large colorful button because it looks like a promotion, which they are trained to ignore.

Something to consider anyway.

uses··on Bootstrap 4
The ability to use the responsive flexbox classes has been game changing for me. I can do large portions of a fully responsive flexbox layout with css classes like d-md-flex and flex-md-row, etc. This drastically cuts down on the amount of stuff that needs to be in my styles.less or whatever. And it makes maintenance easier for that reason as well.

To finish the layout I generally am making a few utility classes to control things like color and spacing (not a fan of the default bootstrap spacing classes). And then of course custom CSS for navigation, typography and other misc widgets.

But the bulk of the main layout is handled entirely with bootstrap classes. And because nearly everything can be specified with the responsive breakpoint prefixes, I don't have to write repetitive media queries.

uses··on Learn CSS Grid through interactive screencasts
Just when I was getting a really firm grip on Flexbox... now Grid is becoming usable everywhere.

I shouldn't be complaining, this fast pace of adopting useful tools is a paradise compared to the stagnation we had 5-15 years ago.

uses··on Netflix Plans to Spend $7B on Content in 2018
It feels like we're pretty far past the point where there could be a "Spotify of movies" or TV.

Instead we have streaming companies getting into media and media companies getting into streaming. Multiple platforms each with their exclusive media content, each with their exclusive software and streaming protocols. Not exactly what I had in mind...

uses··on Improving air conditioner efficiency could reduce worldwide temps
It's funny how almost without fail on HN, I can go to the comments, and the #1-5 comments is someone who quickly dismisses the main premise of the linked article. It's ridiculous how common this is. I've been reading HN over a decade and I don't remember if it was always like this?

uses··on Zillow forces McMansion Hell to delete posts
Thanks, that's actually pretty helpful. I think the term McMansions has a bit of a marketing problem now that I understand the purpose of the movement a bit better.
uses··on Zillow forces McMansion Hell to delete posts
I totally understand the whole "McMansions are bad architecture" thing...

However, something about it really bothers me. There was an episode of 99% Invisible where the guest was talking about their McMansions blog and how it makes fun of these Horrid dwellings. The whole thing stank of classist elitism. The Wrong Type of people were getting the chance to design and build large houses, and of course they're applying their Bad Taste that's neither Genuine nor Authentic. They don't know about the traditions of Fine Architecture so of course they were doing it all wrong...how embarrassing for them!

Edit: It sounds like a lot of the way I interpreted this could come from my background as someone who's transitioned from lower working class to solidly middle class, and so I'm applying that defensively even though (thank God!) I don't live in an Embarassing McMansion. In fact I'm now considering the blog as more of an educational campaign where an expert in the field is railing against problematic and widespread trends in that field. It has less to do with transitions between class and more to do with the decline of an important field of engineering and design as something that people value. I think the word McMansions itself is a bit of a disservice to the purpose of the blog, with its "slobs vs snobs" / Beverly Hillbillies connotations.

uses··on How Propagandists Abuse the Internet and Manipulate the Public [pdf]
There will be comments about how some information from actual news organizations contains opinions or incorrect facts...and therefore it's in the same universe with fake news. This is like, the definition of throwing the baby out with the bathwater...

And it's the actual final goal of the most evil forms of propaganda. Overwhelm the audience with false information > make it harder to determine true vs false > maybe no source can really be trusted > all sources of information have some kind of agenda > all sources of information are roughly equal in quality. Now in the mind of the individual in question, the playing field has been leveled between propaganda and the work of trained journalists. And at that point it's not a real contest.

uses··on PHP 7 at Tumblr
I've found bolt to be completely awesome. I've made 5 or 6 sites with it, made a couple utility extensions, and used the local extension system to do stuff like custom search, a basic shopping cart, and a custom data export feature. Aside from the technology stuff it's got a positive community, good documentation, and active user base on the forum and chat.
uses··on PHP 7 at Tumblr
We use the Rackspace Cloud Sites PAAS. They recently released a PHP 7 beta.

For our sites running Bolt - a PHP CMS which makes heavy use of autoloaded classes - we saw a performance improvement between 45 and 55 percent. For Wordpress, it was around 30-40%.

uses··on The Dutch Reach: Clever Workaround to Keep Cyclists from Getting “Doored”
Wow, that's a really accurate description of what it was like in China as well, specifically in Beijing. The large intersections were some kind of organically flowing chaos of differing modes of transportation. And the honk was used as more of a "I'm coming through". Which makes a lot more sense than a "hey I don't like what you did".

uses··on Kung Fu, Once Central to Hong Kong Life, Is Waning
The thing about Krav Maga, Kung fu, or similar stuff that uses "deadly techniques", is that their efficacy is (conveniently?) unprovable. Meanwhile, submission grappling (such as jiu jitsu) and striking techniques (such as boxing & muay thai) are tested constantly from the lowest levels of beginners via sparring, to the highest levels of champions via competition.

Another thing to consider, is take a look at the all-around grappling skills of a top wrestler, judoka, bjj practitioner, etc. Do we really believe that their all-around skills wouldn't enable them to effectively use forbidden techniques such as ball punches or eye gouges or whatever? A skilled grappler is going to win a grappling contest, and a skilled striker will win a striking contest, regardless of the finishing techniques they employ.

uses··on Google Glass Snoopers Can Steal Your Passcode With a Glance
I'm not sure what I expected from comments on Wired, but that is pretty amazing that all the most highly-upvoted comments are calling Glass users "glassholes", pedophiles, and encouraging violence against them and/or their Glass devices.
