Google accounts serve one purpose: if you are trying to use a google resource that requires an account. Example: save some marked places on google maps.
I can't think of other examples. As the article states, google's explanation for their user-hostile policies, is that at their scale, there is no other option. The other option is, provide services at a scale you can support, and if going larger is not affordable, then you are not able to go larger.
Imagine going into a store. You purchase a microwave. You get it home, open the box, and in the box is a dead cat. You take it back to the store, and there's no one to talk to and no customer service desk. You walk back out of the store with your dead cat in the box, and when you show the receipt to the guy in the store, he accuses you of stealing a microwave because the receipt is from yesterday. No, he won't look inside the box, there's another customer walking out whose receipt he needs to check. Then they ban you from all their stores for trying to steal a microwave, because they have you on camera walking.
You write a letter to corporate, and they tell you that at their scale, they cannot have a customer service desk, or hire another receipt checker.
The thing is, there's actually no real reason to use google for anything. You don't need to ban it from your life, you just don't use it for anything that needs an account with data you need to keep. I use google products for maps and to chromecast to my tv. I use it for search. When I get a new machine or browser, that account just gets recreated because I don't bother storing their password or login name. Like for this site.
What happens with most of these, is light rail goes to the city for a few surrounding suburbs with 50-100k people per town. To get to that train station every morning, you need a car. No, you cannot have a bus circle the suburb for an hour to pick everyone up. No you cannot have many buses purchased by the suburb and stand still during off times - the taxes from 50k people cannot pay for that. No, no one is going to wait at a chicago suburb busstop for a bus while it's raining in October, or baking in July, or blasting -15 temp at 20mph winds, while the bus is late.
No one is driving cars to the desert. They are driving it to the mall, the restaurant, the rail stop.
They don't have to "deal" with parking. Towns have huge parking lots, and land is cheap.
What you did is make up a strawman, where people living in the dense city don't need a car. Guess what - most people there don't have one. I'm one of those people who has had cars in little towns, and no car while I live in the city.
Yes, there are two people who drive from the suburb to the city. Those are the minority. You see that traffic jam into the city in the morning? That's people's choice to drive. They can instead drive 10min to the rail or bus stop in or near their town. The option of which you speak, is already there. Selecting it or not, is the freedom.
No, I'm not talking about every city. Just most.
And no, we didn't have that which you describe. What we had is people having to work real close to where they lived. They are still free to do exactly that. I've tried that for over a decade, and don't own a car. As a consequence of that choice, I rent and sold the house. Maybe if you have a kid in school, you don't want to move too much. Maybe you get fired too and the next job's not that close. There was no fast subway or rail going all meshed between every town. Rail trips between towns were a thing you packed and dressed for. They were not a thing you took to work and back every morning. That thing, was the light rail to the city, is still there, and many people use it.
The reason I'm talking about politics, is because people who think and behave like you, well there's a template y'all follow, and a group y'all belong to.
the comment that was flagged, was up by quite a bit first before the rooster call. hence my edit. no one cares if y'all flag or downvote. i suggest you just go through my comments and flag them all to, ya know, own the libs. it does literally nothing.
the stolen election is that way>>
The equivalent is in short "look at what the enterprise storage vendors are putting in their arrays, at 10x markup. (No, shiny things like Pure/Rubrik/Cohesity are not enterprise storage).
It all depends what you're putting on things. If you buy 5 drives from Newegg for your house and double-parity them or do zfs checksums, etc., you're going to have a bad time when a bunch fail at around the same time because it's an issue with the drive. Yet you do kinda want all the same/alike drives, because the stripe is only as fast as the slowest drive.
So look at what all the vendors picked after they tested the crap out thousands of them all. Me, I personally just mirror everything between two machines with different brand drives, and hope they won't fail at the same time. Once a year I dump an image of everything on an offline big-ass drive - the cheapest spinning big rust that I can buy - and call that my "airgapped vault."

>If 2x single threaded performance the M1 is just an iphone chip on steroids, and the M1 design is indeed a minor tweak of the design by ARM. 2x compared to what? The cortex X3 or a bunch of cell phone CPUs? The M1 is indeed a minor tweak of a Phone processor, with bigger hardware to accommodate laptop/desktop use cases.
Other companies make CPUs that run what people want to run. Apple makes CPUs that don't run what people want to run, and expect the world to rewrite everything for their new toy. That's why MACs have almost no footprint in the real world compared to x86/64. Because my computer is a tool. I have some nails and need to buy a hammer. Apple gives me a screw driver and tells me I'm doing it wrong. It's a tool that can't do the job, so it's the wrong tool. Yes, there is a small niche where Apple is a good fit. That niche, is 7% of the market for laptops for example. Surprise - people don't want an expensive paperweight. They buy tools to solve their problems, not create new ones.
The comment stated you don't need HDMI on the other end. I am not arguing for "Alt-mode" protocol, nor did I write "Alt-mode" anywhere in my comment. I am specifically replying to the wrong fact that most people use USB-C to connect to and HDMI port, not a DP port, on the other end of the cable.
From a quick google, the reason Alt mode is "dead" is because most devices natively support HDMI and you don't need alt-mode. https://www.notebookcheck.net/The-demise-of-HDMI-over-USB-C-...
It's really strange how you and a few other people just keep making up weird scenarios, then attacking those to make yourself feel superior. I don't get it. It was 1/4 book page of simple text. How is it possible to read something that simple, that short, and then make up something completely different in your head. This explains a lot of politics, but I don't get what people with that mental illness are on HN. Please stop. You are not superior - you have reading comprehension problems.
I tried this a few years before going with my "apple diet." It works, but my bloodwork after a few years said I need to stop. There is a catch. The first year, you Cannot pass gas. That clumped oil that comes out, comes out very easily, and unfortunately Alli makes you gassy too. This side-effect goes away in about a year if you power through it.
Not a dietician or a doctor, but perhaps your mounjaro treatment can be cycled with Alli (cheap, OTC) every few years to save some cash. Invest in a large bottle of Dawn dishsoap. Put it in a spray bottle and spray the bowl after you do your stuff. You'll have to, just trust me.
It is people like you who are the absolute worst to deal with. You take a specific example which probably does not not apply to your body, completely and completely twisted what was said so you can both be a victim and feel superior.
I specifically stated a diet that for a person who is working out a couple of hours per week, there is a way to constantly eat and minimize the caloric intake despite large amounts of food. I did not remotely suggest stuffing your face all day is a willpower-based solution to a thyroid problem.
I'm 5'11. In my early 30s, I was a 31 waist, 170lb, benched a full set of 400lb, ran cross country, and had 6% body fat. In my late 30s, I was a 34 waist with high blood pressure. I made the change in my diet, and a few years later, I'm a 31 waist, 170lb, normal blood pressure, and 10% bodyfat, and I eat as much as I feel like, just not whatever I feel like.
This is a solution for maintaining a healthy weight in an active lifestyle, that uses zero willpower, because my willpower is bad. This is not a solution for someone with a thyroid problem who needs to lose almost the weight of my whole body.
I don't know what it is with you and this other guy. You read very simple basic text, and you reply to something you've completely made up. It's like your brain paints a virtual world for yourself where you can feel constantly offended. No one's out to get you. No one's making fun of you. People are talking about something that clearly wasn't for you, so you inject yourself into the conversation so you can feel attacked. Stop that.
I don't do high carbs - fruit are not high in carbs you actually process. I eat normal portions of complex carbs like bread and pasta, normal sized meals. I eat a ridiculous amount of fruit, and that has some sugar in it, but it's actually not that much. What that does is increase my fiber intake to ridiculous levels - and that has many benefits.
My issue was that I use food as an anti-depressant, and to deal with stress. The solution had to involve eating a lot, but minimizing calories. That's why the fat had to go - I can eat twice as many carbs as fat for the same weight. When you look at things like fruit - a lot of those "carb" calories you don't even metabolize since it's fiber.
I don't think I have discovered some magical solution, but it works for people like myself, who have what I consider a minor mental illness called 'self-medication with food.' Mental problems are a lot harder to fix than just not using oil and replacing nuts and chips with fruit. My solution to win the war was not to fight it and learn to live w/ the fact that I'm not perfect, and adjust the lifestyle to that.
High carb diets are a bad idea. I eat normal balanced meals, just with no fat. Long-term high fat diets are for people who want liver damage, and stop eating when they're full. A little bit of fat makes you full, unlike carbs. But keto is terrible for your health if you do it for decades.
The tiny amount of fat I do get, is from things like red tuna and other low-fat fish. It's amazing how little good fat you actually need in your diet, if you look that up. Literally one can of chunk light canned tuna is all you need for the day.
Now here's something groundbreaking that's pretty good - thin and wide no sugar no fat pancakes: 1 cup flour, 3/4 cup fat free fairlife milk, 2 packets splenda, 1/2 cup Egg Beaters. mix real well so it's runny with no flour chunks. no need for baking powder. real short spray of oil to just get some drops on a teflon pan. no need to spray when you flip.
Now my diet is not high carbs, but let's address the "no fat+high carbs = bad." the reason that's everything you've read in the last 20 years, is because that's what you chose to read. there are different diets for different causes of fatness in people.
fat makes you full faster so helps you eat less calories. carbs make you work out harder, so you burn more calories. if you have an active lifestyle - carbs and no fat. if you sit on the couch after sitting at the office, you want fat and no carbs. dietary fiber isn't something you should count as carbs.
if the reason you're overweight is because you like to constantly eat, and it has zero to do with hunger - you don't want any fat. you want the most amount of food for the least calories, and fat is double of carbs per gram. you want lots of indigestible fiber a normal amount of carbs, and eating the potatoes with that thick rough skin, with the skin.
Or do you think it's a coincidence that when they give examples of improved scores, they only give them for newly opened private schools. Wouldn't the average or median reading level for the state, compared to the old level for the state, be the metric that shows.. reading level for the state? When they do give a number for the state, that number is not a score - it's a rank. Do you know how rank works? It's not a measure of how good you're doing compared to how you were doing before. It's a measure of how good you're doing now compared to someone else now.
Yes, looking at a very basic fact and recognizing someone completely misrepresented that fact, makes them feel comparatively smarter than the person who does not recognize that even after it was explained to them. Now your comment - it did not make me smarter. It did increased my rank on that chart though.
but before one would do that, which may be an insurmountable long-term goal, someone should compare going to a florist for pills, to going to a doctor for making up diets.
so, would you say a solution to the problem that lets you eat as much as you want, so you don't have to use your willpower, be an appropriate solution to suggest? There is a difference between taking last-resort medication for the rest of your life, and eating apples.
I've had many cars, I've bought houses, I've driven to work and grocery shopping. About the last ~decade, I tried something different.
I started renting. When I rent, I look for a place walking distance to at least one major store, and areas like parks. Had a couple of gigs where I need to be onsite once/twice per week. Had a gig onsite daily. About half of it was remote work. Sometimes paid more rent for it, sometimes not.
In that decade, I've moved 6 times, lived in 3 states and another country, and have not owned a car or taken a bus unless vacationing overseas. The wife and I do have bikes. If it's crap weather a week straight I order from the store, usually with free shipping/delivery if you buy enough.
Houses are getting ridiculously expensive, but that market crashes - I've been through the 2008 one and had to sell at a loss. we're about to hit one now. now you could be lucky and just ride it out in your house. or you could get canned because the economy is down when your house is down, and have to sell at a loss when you move for the new job. it's a risk, risk has cost, over your lifetime you're more likely to get shafted at least once and it'll be for 6 figures. just average that out over your remaining lifetime as a monthly cost.
With napkin-math, if you:
1. take your downpayment and just dump in into smth like vigax
2. subtract out the interest you'd pay on a loan, assuming you sell before the loan end date so you lost a lot in interest on amortization
3. include that your job market is now worldwide, or even your country-wide so you get a better job that leaves more in your pocket
you actually come out ahead. like a lot ahead. yes, a couple of times a year I rent a car for a few days, and about 5-10 times a year I pay for a lyft. and it's been no issue at all. ever go home from the office to take an hour nap? or get an apartment above your office buildings, sit at home, and just take the elevator down or cross the street to go to a meeting?
cars are not easy. cars are a pain in the ass full of unpleasant surprises, and are a financial garbage dump. a bus or a subway doesn't have to replace cars - planning around using two feet is not only possible, it's dirt easy.
people who have to take last-measure medication usually don't stop eating when they are full. i know, it's weird to tell someone who doesn't stop eating when they're full, how to still maintain weight if they... don't stop eating when they're full. i'm a weird guy with ADD and get side-tracked easily. I got an appointment with the florist about that next week, hopefully he can recommend a medication.
yes, a doctor will not tell you diet tricks. if you are asking your doctor for diet tricks, we need to step back a minute. when you're done grocery shopping at jiffy lube, drive home, sit down, and carefully read this link.
this is what a doctor is. a doctor will give you general health guidelines, but knows very little about diets. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physician
I used to lift and be real fit till about 40. Like bulky-lean looking, bench 400 10x with a 6pack. Had a lot to do with being on the road for work all over the world, and you sit at the gym at the hotel for an hour every night because of nothing else to do, and there are girls there also on business who you'll never see again. I drank A Lot, ate anything I wanted, and did lots of blo on weekends.
It was getting out of control, so I did months of google-foo, went to a pharmacy in eastern europe, got like a thousand 150mg disulfiram pills under the counter for fifty bucks, and took one pill every morning for 2 years. You don't drink, you can't drink or you die, you forget drinking exists and after a couple of months don't even think about it, yet still do all the same stuff you used to - like dancing and clubs if that's your thing. And it's even more fun. There were no side effects.
Then things changed with age, testosterone went to crap, joints hurt. I got married and settled down. Can't work out too much now - just a couple of hours per week, and no heavy weights. Within 2 years I couldn't fit into my clothes and had high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
I realized I don't eat because I'm hungry, but because it keeps away sadness. So I changed my diet so I could eat however much I want. I now have a 4-pack instead of 6, fit into my pants, and eat however much I want.
I cut out fat completely. No oil when I cook besides a light spray on the frying pan. No nuts. Tuna - not salmon. Real expensive lean filet if I want cow in my mouth. Only white meat from birds. All the pasta, rice, and potatoes I want, but zero sugar added to anything. Lots of splenda and sweet n low. Fat free fairlife milk (lactose filtered out = less sugar calories). I eat normal sized meals.
Then, I have fruit and berries, and I eat as much of that as I want. I'm stuffing my face the whole day. Today, I had a pint of blueberries, 5 medium apples, 2 mangoes, and a pound of grapes.
Speaking of gastrointestinal issues, my poo is now soft and gentle, and smells delicious.
UNIX-like is not a convention of UNIX - it's a convention of "we didn't get to making that useful thing yet, there's other stuff to do."
But let's talk computers. And phones. All mine, only have USB-C. I have an old one that has micro, and I chromecast the screen from that one. I connect them all to TVs. With HDMI on the TV end.
So literally your dead on arrival example is not even present in the life of my household, while what's talked about in the article is widely used.
Several restaurants around you (I've never seen one, ever) being bigoted and rejecting business, does not mean your general statement is true. 99.(99999?)% of physical businesses also take cash. A blanket generalization, like the statement to which I replied, is based on - umm - the general case. a .0001% case of it being true doesn't make it true.
Trees you see, don't grow on land. Because I saw one growing through the water in a shallow lake once.
Here in the real world, the polar opposite of what was stated is actually true. In fact, I'll bet you a lot more businesses Only take cash than only take credit. Adding credit to a business that does cash (most businesses), is expensive. Adding cash to a business that does credit (count them on one hand) is also expensive.
You seem to not understand that, so I do have more tree and fern examples - just ask. You'll have to wait a couple of days if you want other kinds of flora however, as my brain turns slowly.
Also, ghmm, that nice long shit I used to take while browsing reddit... Go ahead and send me a meeting invite for timeslot.
If a business takes both cash and cards, allowing cards In Addition to already taking cash, does not cost more. It costs a lot less.
But don't take my word for it. Just look at how many places kept trying to offer discounts for cash, how hard and for how many decades the card companies lobbied against that, and how many places do that now since it became illegal for credit cards to force that into their vendor agreements.
Let me give you an example of the logic used for the statement. A 5 ton truck is faster than a porshe 911.
When the truck is cruising on the highway and the porshe is starting off a red light.
There are many ARM CPUs out there, Apple made another one with some minor tweaks. For the home, I can get a 64 core Intel with a terabyte of RAM. For work, I get an 8-core xeon laptop w/ 128GB of ECC RAM, that runs cool, quiet, and just as fast as Apple. Difference is, when I want it to run much, much faster than Apple, I can plug in a 200W power brick, spin up the fans to max, and have my script done when I'm back from lunch.
Iphones aren't market leaders, with 20% market share vs Android. They're overpriced toys to which you don't have full access and can't run your apps of your own choosing on. I'm browsing this site by chromecasting my phone screen to my 65" TV, and I've reprogrammed my buttons to pick up calls when the phone is locked if I press power+volDown. When I go to a customer site, I can plug in my phone into an ESX farm, copy a VMDK onto the host, and start the demo VM. All the guys with a terabyte of storage on their expensive iphones are searching for that USB stick in their bag.
AirPod Max? Who cares. It's just a bluetooth headset the price of a laptop, and sounds like garbage compared to my $100 Sennheiser bluetooth.
Apple products are toys.
Android OS? The latest version of which one I'm running on the 12yo phone I'm using to browse this site on my TV, in firefox, which has no trace of google services and is lightning fast?
The 'classical consumer' you're talking about here is my wife. I get her an iphone because if she had something better, she'd screw it up and waste my time. It's the same reason you get your kid a chevy cavalier instead of an audi S8. That doesn't make the chevy the better car. When she dropped it, because the back was slippery glass (brilliant, as you put it), the $1200 phone had to go to the trash. Because you know, let's make things people hold and drop a lot slippery and fragile. Fanboy comment? Why didn't she goop on a screen protector and a thick rubber case? Same reason I don't wrap my car in bubblewrap. Because not having your device destroyed when you drop it 4ft on wood floors is a basic function of the device, and Apple seems to be the only one struggling with basic functionality. Bad reception? You're holding it wrong. Destroyed by tiny falls? You should have wrapped it in bubblewrap. Keyboard breaks from typing? You shouldn't be typing on macs, that's what siri is for.
Part of the reason they did so well, is because Apple products are shiny and cute, and they're dumbed-down forget-it devices for the lowest common denominator. I wouldn't necessarily call 20% market share well, but because they're all margin, Apple makes a lot.
I'm here saying I'm absolutely willing to pay the iPhone price so I don't get bugged by my wife - my time is worth more. But that doesn't make the iPhone any more brilliant than a car that only goes 65 that you buy for your teen.
