user_of_the_wek··on The challenges of building modern open source software on PowerPC Mac OS X
As the widgets now basically _are_ your desktop, you can display them quite easily.

If you have any part of the desktop visible (e.g. to the left or right of the dock) you can click there so it hides all windows. I'm not sure if you need to enable this somewhere.

Also, there is a trackpad gesture to show the desktop: Keep your thumb stationary and use three fingers to swipe away, as if zooming out.

I'm a big fan of social safety nets, but would you agree it needs to stop somewhere? I assume the people laid off here were very well compensated for their work and likely had ample opportunity to build their own reserves. A safety net should be set up in a way that it enables you to have a comfortable, but basic lifestyle. Or should society pay for the CEO's mansion's maintenance should he get fired?
user_of_the_wek··on Why is it so hard to build an airport?

They wanted to do that in Munich

user_of_the_wek··on Thoughts on the Future of Software Development
> > producing documentation

> Yikes. Not looking forward to that in the future.

Instead of documentation, I'm hoping more for "analysis". A helper that can take in a whole project (legacy or not) and tell you what it's supposed to be doing, and maybe point out areas for improvement.

user_of_the_wek··on Nanofont3x4: Smallest readable 3x4 font with lowercase (2015)
I guess it's only meant for devices with (a smaller number of) large pixels. Your HiDPI monitor or retina iPhone screen will not be a good match.
user_of_the_wek··on macOS Sonoma 14.4 might break Java on your machine
Yes, this is irking me too. You really need a high density display to enjoy macOS, it shouldn't be like that. I guess they like to leave the baggage behind.
user_of_the_wek··on Postgres is eating the database world
But that's the gist of the article here, right? That Postgres is taking over all db-like use cases. It doesn't claim that it can replace Kafka but https://www.amazingcto.com/postgres-for-everything/ certainly does. Of course it's not a full replacement, but it might be good enough.
user_of_the_wek··on Testcontainers
In my last project we used https://java.testcontainers.org/modules/kafka/ to start a small Kafka container. It's not the exactly like a production installation, but it goes a long way.
user_of_the_wek··on Unbricking my MacBook took an email to Tim Cook
I'm sure this is true for a lot of companies, many have a support department that takes care of the "difficult cases". On of the quickest ways to get in touch with them is through sending emails or letters to the CEO. Bonus points if strongly worded, although the people working there will hate you while trying to help you out. They might be better connected and have options to handle things that a normal support person doesn't have.

Source: I'm married to someone working in one of those departments.

user_of_the_wek··on Kotlin multiplatform is stable and production-ready
AFAIK they use Swing.
user_of_the_wek··on I'm sorry I bit you during my job interview (2011)
That's why we do interviews via Zoom.

user_of_the_wek··on Looming natural gas shortages has the EU scrambling for solutions
Norway is not a member of the EU.
user_of_the_wek··on Ghana will no longer sell cocoa to Switzerland
When I visited Croatia I got the impression that many older locals liked me and Germany in general. I came to realize that this does not have to be a good thing when people started to speak positively about Hitler :( Apparently, many Croatians are Nazi sympathizers and in the same vein dislike England. At least that's what my croatian friend told me.
user_of_the_wek··on Ghana will no longer sell cocoa to Switzerland
They are planning to fuse the two companies together btw. - both brothers have been dead for years now.
