without prejudice, ucc-1-308, accepted for value and returned for value, exempt from levy, bailiff abandoned the levy, loss of confidence, cease and desist your public service immediately, I am not one of your bastard city-statizen debt slave cattle, I stand under public law, revocation of election filed, W8-BEN as a state citizen foreign to the Washington DC city-state a jurisdiction foreign to the lawful state and therefore exempt from federal taxes.

>> Video games almost exclusively run on Windows.

A decade ago this was true but today this is utter bullshit. There is a 20% of games that are exclusively Windows, sure.

You wanna play vidya sure have a dedicated Windows box for that, no one will judge you for the Windows part specifically.

>> I am a full time Linux user and still miss how convenient installing things like drivers

If you're buying hardware that doesn't already have drivers in the Linux kernel tree, or you don't have the skills to use DKMS, you should go back to using Windows only. Please uninstall all/any Linux you have.

>> It's not hard to configure Windows to be safe

Tell us we can't take anything you post here seriously without telling us we can't take anything you post here seriously.

>> my Linux servers take more effort to secure properly with many more foot-guns available via configuration file.

Yikes. The hands that typed this should not have admin/root access to servers.

>> and yet they are stuck on Windows because CAD software is stuck on Windows

I have supported CAD software in business environments that had Windows OS as a dependency. We still virtualized Windows and used PCI pass through. It really wasn't that hard to set up. All the Linux, some Unix (BSD) were managed with Salt States (way simpler than AD).

Apologizing for how much Windows sucks... go back to reading Wired and Popular Mechanics. This is Hacker News.

Imagine being dumb enough to run Windows. Running a copy of Windows in a throwaway VM is the only acceptable place to run Windows.
user6723··on Spying on a smartphone remotely by the authorities: feasibility and operation
GrapheneOS is just about the only Android distro that isn't trash.
user6723··on Spying on a smartphone remotely by the authorities: feasibility and operation
Google Play is a rootkit. Google will fully cooperate with any government. If you use GrapheneOS on a pixel device your bootloader is closed source and the system-on-chip is largely undocumented and impossible to audit without serious resources. So yeah. Shit's fucked man.

Deno was created by the guy who created NodeJS, so it might be good for JS projects.
user6723··on OpenBSD SEC(4) for Route Based IPSec VPNs
Lower byte overhead, right, damn this should be obvious already to those of us who work with BSD. Thank you.
user6723··on OpenBSD SEC(4) for Route Based IPSec VPNs
I have been using OpenBSD's Wireguard implementation for a while now. I see this and think "why would anyone use IPsec when there is Wireguard"? Maybe I am missing something, am gonna dig into this.
user6723··on SEC notifies SolarWinds CISO and CFO of possible action in cyber investigation
We live in an age of binary reproducible builds and anything worth running is open source.

Windows-centric orgs barely know software from their ass.

If your org is dumb enough to run closed source software for core IT functions, or you run Windows on bare metal, or don't have TPM chips and secure boot enabled, you kinda deserve what you get.

user6723··on All Pocket accounts will be converted to Firefox accounts
I have a script that runs in the background and exports my bookmarks, merges them with the existing file, then syncs that file over Syncthing.

I am not sharing my bookmarks with Mozilla, I am way too smart for that.

user6723··on Thousands of species of animals probably have consciousness
One of my cats has the IQ to play Tetris, for sure. I know what will happen if I connect a brain/computer interface to him and let him at it. The other cat is fucking retarded though.
user6723··on Cloud, why so difficult? (2022)
Most developers barely know how to use their computer, let alone a computer to be used to run something in production.

t. DevOps/cloud guy

user6723··on Cloud, why so difficult? (2022)
I may have something for you in the works actually. A team I consult with is working on a bare-metal as a service based service offering that provides a Heroku-like experience. Storage is network-attached on a low latency network and customers can select dedicated disk pools if they want. One of the interfaces to the infra is a Heroku-like interface.
user6723··on Cloud, why so difficult? (2022)
Developers want something that is like Heroku

We did, it's called GrapheneOS https://GrapheneOS.org

Imagine using an OS where other men get to choose what software you are "allowed" to run.

Might as well let someone else have sex with your wife while you're at it.

user6723··on I don't expect to see competitive RISC-V servers any time soon
The timing attacks result in data leakage between processes, even if the processes are in different VMs.

It's a huge problem for cloud providers, but most customers don't fully understand the issue and cloud providers aren't forthcoming that "mitigations" are partial at best, so it's really just a huge problem for cloud customers.

user6723··on I don't expect to see competitive RISC-V servers any time soon
Some risc-v chips can execute in order and avoid having spectre-like problems. I work at a IaaS where customers deploy through our hosted cicd and we are very interested in risc-v solving our multi-tenancy concerns.

GCC and clang already have enough support for risc-v that we have no concerns for support being there. If GCC and clang have what's necessary, everything else is fine.

The moment we see close to a juncture where we can put an order in for risc-v with very many cores, our investors are going to dump a massive round of funding.

Whether risc-v is popular or not doesn't matter. Our multi-tenant services won't have fundamental security isolation problems, everyone serving on x86_64 and ARM will. Looks like risc-v will dominate where things actually matter, unless some new iteration of OpenPOWER comes out.

user6723··on AMD's 128-core Epycs could spell trouble for Ampere Computing
Even if less performant, a variant of this CPU guaranteed 100% immune from spectre-like problems is highly desirable.
user6723··on French govt. says users of uBlock Origin, Signal etc. are potential terrorists
Well, if some dipshit in a costume is gonna show up and point a gun at me for using open source software of my choice, I just may contemplate responding with violence, possibly in a coordinated manner.

Governments would be wise, so long as I'm not doing anything to hurt anyone else, to mind their own business and fuck off.
