ursuscamp··on SEC charges crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun and his companies for fraud
Same with Signature. Both banks are being sold off. I was shorthand referring to whoever bought them.
ursuscamp··on SEC charges crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun and his companies for fraud
Is the FDIC going to tell Silicon Valley bank to stop taking deposits from tech companies, or make them stop purchasing long-term treasuries? My guess is no…
ursuscamp··on So you've installed `fzf` – now what?
I've been using fzf for a long time, but I didn't even know about Ctrl-R. Since I use fish, I've been used to just typing some random part of an old command, then hitting the Up key to cycle through old commands with that snippet. I'm going to have to give this a real shot.
ursuscamp··on Credit Suisse sheds nearly 25%, key backer says no more money
Custodia in Wyoming has been going through this same thing, recently. They tried to start a 100% reserve bank. The Fed has been ignoring their application for a Master Account for two or three years, until just recently, they were told on the side to withdraw the application or it would be formally denied.

Then, according to the CEO of the bank, the Fed leaked to the press.

ursuscamp··on SVB Used Former McCarthy Staffers to Weaken Regulations, Lobby FDIC
The entire system is a house of cards. The collateral of the system itself is debt (USTs). There is no firm ground to stand on after decades of low interest rates. Marginal tweaks to banking regulations neither caused nor can fix this.

The Fed is raising rates and we are taking our medicine.

ursuscamp··on SVB chief pressed Congress to weaken risk regulations
Handouts and rescues for well-connected parties is a feature of government, not any particular economic system.
ursuscamp··on The Machinery of Freedom [pdf]
This book was extremely influential on me during my formative years.
ursuscamp··on $3.3B of the ~$40 billion of USDC reserves remain at SVB
Okay, but how are they a fraud? You've said they helped launder money, which if true is certainly criminal, but how are they fraudulent specifically?

Is there some evidence that they are not fully backed?

ursuscamp··on $3.3B of the ~$40 billion of USDC reserves remain at SVB
Why makes Tether a fraud?
ursuscamp··on The Inverse Jim Cramer ETF
The SEC will allow joke and meme ETFs, and triple leverage commodity ETFs, but a normal, non-leveraged Bitcoin ETF? No, we have to protect investors from that.
ursuscamp··on Craig Wright: Open source developers have a fiduciary duty
Craig Wright’s lawsuits are not just an attack on single developers, Bitcoin Core or the Bitcoin ecosystem, but open source software itself.

It could be chaos if ignorant courts find that contributors to open source projects can be forced to alter code to meet imaginary fiduciary duties, or open them to lawsuits that can ruin them.

ursuscamp··on The Investors Who Still Think Crypto Can Make Them Rich
It sounds like you think it's unwise, but that's not quite the same thing as irrational. People make different decisions using different sets of information.

I have a significant portion of my savings as Bitcoin (much more than 1%). That decision was made through lots of close observation of the ecosystem, careful reading and thought. I'm very confident in the long-term growth of it, but I don't keep any month to month expense money as Bitcoin because of short-term volatility.

You may disagree, but you can't characterize that as irrational.

ursuscamp··on The Investors Who Still Think Crypto Can Make Them Rich
What makes it irrational?
ursuscamp··on C-rusted: The advantages of Rust, in C, without the disadvantages
They missed the opportunity to call it “crusty”
ursuscamp··on Web Push for Web Apps on iOS and iPadOS
This is really great news for the Lightning network, if that is your thing. There is a Lightning wallet, called Mutiny Wallet (https://mutinywallet.com) which is an entirely web-based Lightning wallet/node (using WebAssembly, etc) under development. A Lightning wallet PWA is a great boost to censorship resistance because no one can be cut off from their money because of oppressive government or App Store policy.

One of the challenges of Lightning usability on mobile wallets is sending payments when there is no guarantee that the user's mobile wallet is getting the CPU time necessary to receive the payment without having the app directly open. Allowing push notification for PWA is a potential way to make sure that a user's wallet gets some CPU time for incoming payments!

ursuscamp··on Rust went from side project to world’s fastest growing language
It's been a few years since I've used Nim, but outside of the language itself, the tooling around Rust is absolutely incredible. Rust Analyzer, Clippy, Cargo, etc.
ursuscamp··on The creator of North Korean hackers’ new favorite crypto privacy service
I believe you are correct.
ursuscamp··on The creator of North Korean hackers’ new favorite crypto privacy service
Lots of people in the bitcoin community regularly mix their coins out of principal.
ursuscamp··on The digital pound: A new form of money for households and businesses?
Is this a chaumian mint? I have never heard of this project, it's pretty neat.

There are a couple of chaumian mint systems in development in the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Cashu: https://github.com/cashubtc/cashu Fedminit: https://fedimint.org

In Cashu, a mint is a single custodian, while Fedimint is designed around a multiple federated mints in a multisig. Both issue e-tokens signed with blind signatures. Both of them also integrate with the Lightning network, so users of the minted cash can make use of the rest of Bitcoin ecosystem for payments.

ursuscamp··on The digital pound: A new form of money for households and businesses?
Certain people have been pushing for digital money for decades, since long before Bitcoin was invented. Bitcoin was the culmination of a quest to find an alternative to that future that was already developing, not the inspiration for that future.
ursuscamp··on Nostr.how – A Complete Guide to Nostr
I believe multiple relay operators are currently working on R2R communication. It will probably be pretty common soon.
ursuscamp··on Nostr.how – A Complete Guide to Nostr
It’s something we’re building in real time, as we use it. If you visit the NIPs repo, you will see it changing by the idea. As the clients and relays try things, ideas propagate quickly. In that sense it is extremely exciting.
ursuscamp··on Nostr.how – A Complete Guide to Nostr
Also, if you are interested in trying the many web clients, you could try Nostore: https://testflight.apple.com/join/ouPWAQAV

It’s a Safari extension that will store your keys and sign events for you, so you don’t need to enter them into every web page.

Disclaimer: I wrote it.

ursuscamp··on Three Arrows Capital has defaulted on a loan worth more than $670M
I'm sure this doesn't apply to many here here, but: Do not trust leverage-trading crypto banks. Do not trade on leverage. These systems just recreate our current system of debt-based money that will inevitably collapse when the easy money dries up.

If you believe Bitcoin has a future like I do, then buy some Bitcoin and hold it in cold storage for a long time, or try to jumpstart a circular economy where you use Bitcoin to buy and sell goods. Don't try to recreate the current system with fake decentralization.

ursuscamp··on No one is certain what Roman bronze dodecahedrons were used for (2018)
He doesn’t know how to use the seashells!
ursuscamp··on Why OKRs might not work at your company
My company is adopting this. They just gave a big company wide meeting/sales presentation on this. I ended up tuning it out after a few minutes. Maybe that was a mistake but I am just so sick of the corporate gobbledygook dog-and-pony show. At the risky of sounding ignorant, these corporate productivity systems feel like cottage industries invented by consultants to sell to management looking for a reason to justify their salaries to investors.
ursuscamp··on Tiny C Compiler
I promise you, no one is impressed by Rust’s compile times.
