ursuscamp··on Belling the Cat
I never looked up the origin of the name before. Interestingly enough, I associate Bellingcat with permanent cold warriors, a group of people who seem determined to fulfill the moral of the tale.
ursuscamp··on Stripe Launches L1 Blockchain: Tempo
The sales pitch: It's permissionless, but also has baked in compliance. These two things are not compatible. Stripe must comply with US regulation, they aren't going to launch a financial network that is actually permissionless.
ursuscamp··on [dead]
As an avid X user, I think she did an astonishing job keeping the platform afloat at all given that the owner is borderline insane and uses the platform as his personal playground.
ursuscamp··on Woman's DNA discovered in 20k year old deer-tooth pendant (2023)
The article says that it belonged to a species of deer called “wapiti”. Since I never heard of it, I looked it up and it’s just an elk. Why didn’t the article just say “elk” which is the much more common term?
ursuscamp··on El Salvador's crypto experiment ends in failure
That really depends in your time horizon
ursuscamp··on Show HN: Rust Web Framework
That’s 1% of an ORM.
ursuscamp··on U.S. court orders LibGen to pay $30M to publishers, issues broad injunction
The greatest and most lasting art in human history was created by artists who were sponsored by the wealthy as their only source of income.
ursuscamp··on X (Twitter) blocks links to hacked JD Vance dossier
>But blocking links to hacked documents regarding JD Vance seems a little suspect considering that, as the article mentions, he was opposed to blocking links to hacked documents about Hunter Biden

Per X, the links were blocked because they included un-redacted personal information such as address and SSN.

ursuscamp··on Okay, I Like WezTerm
One really cool feature of the quick copy mode is that if you do the uppercase version of the letters it will automatically paste the value back into the terminal prompt.
ursuscamp··on Ask HN: Every day feels like prison
This is good advice. Happiness is found through purpose, not hedonistic pursuit of abstract happiness for its own sake. Family is the ultimate purpose, but if not family then find a way to contribute to the greater world: Start a business and employ others, or dedicate your time to a charitable cause.

Purpose frees you, not traps you further, if you embrace it.

ursuscamp··on On being brought up by libertarian economists
I emailed him about his book Machinery of Freedom in my 20s (15+ years ago) and he was willing to engage in good faith debate with a complete nobody on the internet who emailed him out of the blue. He was not remotely pretentious or insufferable.
ursuscamp··on Zellij: A terminal workspace with batteries included
Still waiting for zellij to allow moving tabs
ursuscamp··on The Perl and Raku Conference 2024 is looking for sponsors
Does anyone use Raku? I have never seen a blog post or tweet about it, ever.
ursuscamp··on U.S. Government Now Spends More on Debt Interest than National Defense
It definitely hurts those who hold debt. Maybe you're thinking of borrowers? Certainly debt holders are very damaged by inflation, too. Especially long term debt holders (such as the previously mentioned pensions/retirement accounts).

If you have a 30 year bond paying 2% and inflation goes up to 4%, you're making -2% on your bond. Sure, that's not as bad as -4% for cash holders. But it's not good at all if you're planning to retire someday as the compounding effects of inflation over the decades wipe out your retirement benefits.

ursuscamp··on U.S. Government Now Spends More on Debt Interest than National Defense
Persistently high inflation and economic decline, plus geopolitical blunders, leading toward US treasuries beginning to lose their status as global reserve asset and precipitating a US debt crisis.
ursuscamp··on U.S. Government Now Spends More on Debt Interest than National Defense
Probably, but by far the most likely scenario is a decade or more of persistently high inflation as bondholders (i.e. your pensions and retirement accounts) and normal people are pick-pocketed to bring down the nominal debt load.
ursuscamp··on U.S. Government Now Spends More on Debt Interest than National Defense
Do you mean how long this system can last for the world, or for the US? I would be surprised if this system lasted 15 more years in the US.
ursuscamp··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
I can't wait for this to take seven years to resolve, with the resolution being that the US government gets a big payday in bribes (er, sorry, fines) and nothing actually changes.
ursuscamp··on Sweden Is a NATO Member
Hysterics will spend all day talking about what a liar Trump is right up until the moment he says something he's going to do that they think is bad, then all of a sudden he's telling the absolute truth.

Trump lies, postures, hyperbolizes, boasts and self-promotes. More shamelessly than most politicians. We all know this.

Trump isn't going to pull the U.S. out of NATO. He probably couldn't, even if he wanted to, which he doesn't. He just wants to force other countries to pay more, that's all. Stop with this nonsense already.

ursuscamp··on Sweden Is a NATO Member
This ridiculous hysteria serves no purpose. People said all these same things before his first election, and if anything Trump just accelerated aggression with Russia, just like every president before him and Biden after him.
ursuscamp··on Dada, an experimental new programming language
As an avid fan of Rust, the Rust community is incredibly cringe about this topic.
ursuscamp··on Holepunch Unveils P2P Platform "Pear Runtime"
The same company. The claims about pumping Bitcoin are ridiculous, but being secretly insolvent? It seems unlikely at this point, but maybe.
ursuscamp··on Nine US states are teaming up to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps
As always with these things, if they actually increase the value for home-owners, then people will naturally begin to select them on their own over time. However, if they do not increase value, then you will just be hamstringing your state by forcing people to use inferior products.
ursuscamp··on Men hand over Bitcoins worth two billion euros to German federal police
If they were smart they would keep them, but Western governments are rarely smart about this.

They should be able to find buyers at OTC desks and ETFs without affecting the market too much.

ursuscamp··on How Australia’s ‘Bluey’ conquered children’s entertainment
Bluey blew me away when I saw it with my daughter. It's sweet, positive, emotional, well written. It's not the slightest bit cynical, handles every issue with tact, doesn't contain heavy handed messaging and has traditional values. It also has a very positive two parent dynamic. This is an absolute unicorn of a show.

Note: my usage of "traditional values" is not meant to evoke anything political or intended to be interpreted from a culture war lens. I just mean it positively portrays a family dynamic that can be universally appreciated.

ursuscamp··on How Australia’s ‘Bluey’ conquered children’s entertainment
I have two daughters about the same age and Bluey and Bingo (6 and 3) and we play like that. I have found Bluey has the most positive view of fatherhood of any show my kids have watched. In fact, I was so taken aback by it that it stuck out to me in a very noticeable way, in contrast to everything else.
ursuscamp··on General Availability of the AWS SDK for Rust
I largely agree with this, honestly. Just use tokio
ursuscamp··on General Availability of the AWS SDK for Rust
You can use tokio’s block_on to sync-ify. You need to instantiate a runtime, but you don’t need to do run your whole application in it, just the Future.

edit: Tokio can be beefy. You might look at some of the smaller single-threaded runtimes to execute your future in the main application thread if you’re only concerned about serial execution.

ursuscamp··on Argentina's New President Wants to Adopt the Dollar as the National Currency
I'm well aware of the argument that left-wing anarchists make that anarcho-capitalism isn't real anarchism. As per usual, only left-wing anarchists care about this semantic argument. Anarcho-capitalists keep using that term, and 99.9% of the rest of world doesn't know, and wouldn't care even if you explained your point of view to them.

Also, is Murray Rothbard like Voldemort to you? You seem to refuse to even say his name.

ursuscamp··on Argentina's New President Wants to Adopt the Dollar as the National Currency
Ayn Rand heroes are all sophisticated, educated artists and artisans. This man is more like a psychotic Ron Paul (I say this with some affection). He's an anarchist and very Austrian in his economics affiliation. Definitely not an affiliation that Objectivists favored at all.
