up_and_up··on The price of solar power just fell 50% in 16 months
> instant equity on our house.

Depends. Solar doesnt necessarily add value. Depends on the appraisal. I only know because I tried to buy a home with solar panels. The homeowner had raised the price of the home to include his investment in the panels but the appraiser wouldnt include the panels in the appraisal.

up_and_up··on Successfully Onboarding Remote Developers
I have worked remotely for 4 years. I posted this on another thread but it seems relevant here:

Start by creating a remote-first culture. Everyone should think "remote" first. Thus it should never matter if a local employee is working from home, the HQ, from the other side of the world. Make all work processes remote friendly. That should be step zero when considering hiring a remote person regardless of the reason. The goal should be to avoid a two-tiered culture. Some differences will always be there but if the spirit of the remote-friendly culture is there integration is pretty fluid. Thus (near) all communication happens in Slack/Hipchat/etc. Group meetings, when including remote people, happen in video conf / Hangouts. Shared Google docs to collaborate on. Have in-person meetups 2-4 x a year for beneficial face-time and for people to get to know each other better on a personal level. When a new person is hired, have them do 20 min 1-on-1's with all team members to get to know each other and their job role. Have monthly video conf/hangouts on non-work technical topics where people rotate presenting. The biggest element is the decision to be a fully remote team. Which honestly is a major retention benefit as well. Why should local employees not enjoy the same flexibility to work as needed remotely?

up_and_up··on Claims of Age Bias Rise, but Standards of Proof Are High
> no more than 40 hours a week of work, not on call 24/7

I work at a startup in NYC and our culture is like that. Seems like you might want to explore the culture at other companies. There is no reason you need to kill yourself to work in tech. Work/life balance is important at many companies. It leads to longer-term employees, higher morale, better team-work etc (anecdotally speaking as I have worked for companies at all ends of the spectrum).

up_and_up··on Why did Facebook decide to shut down Parse?
> after two failed attempts to move from AWS to Facebooks metal failed spectacularly

Seems more like a problem with FB onboarding them and their tech. With some of the smartest people in the world they can't solve problems like this?

> Startups should reconsider their metal, as future acquirers will likely heed this lesson strongly.

Makes no sense. Startups should focus on product and users. Scaling on AWS is somewhat of a no brainer giving more time for what's important: product and users. This seems more like an outlier situation in which FB really didnt care.

up_and_up··on My Reaction to React
> Instead of learning a new framework I wrote my own.

Hands down, the worst code I have ever inherited from another developer is in a scenario like this. Happened to me a bunch of times. Worst ever was a former boss who didnt "trust" Prototype.js nor jQuery and decided to write his own version. Pure hell.

Please be kind to your fellow programmer brethren. Unless the problem you are trying to solve is uber simple and obvious or you are just "doing it for fun/knowledge/etc", find a well-adopted framework, with good documentation and get to work.

up_and_up··on The Tech Talent Shortage Is a Lie
I am a self-taught developer.

I think part of the reason is that "software development" job requirements have vastly expanded from 10-15 years ago. Speaking generally, a decent hirable engineer is now expected to not only be able to contribute full-stack (front and backend) but also do an amount of devops as well. The tools have become more specialized requiring greater experience to wield them. Nobody with less than 5 years exp is going to be at all productive and worth hiring IMO (note: that could include 4 years of freelancing while in college) Granted this is allowing very small teams to be highly productive. But you can't hire B-level or Jr. people at all.

So the experience level bar has been raised for the same position 10 years later.

up_and_up··on Work for a remote culture
I have worked 100% remote for 3 years and love it.

On the quantitative side of things, remote workers are much less likely to have commute time to and from work, leaving an extra ~1 hour a day (assuming 30 min commute from home to being in office chair ready to work) being available. Assuming those numbers, thats an extra 5 hours per employee per week. Again, assuming that multiplied by 50 weeks, thats 250 additional hours per employee per year. No small sum which could lead to a sizable productivity advantage.

This is assuming that the employee would devote that extra hour a day to the company of course. By my point is that onsite employees would not even have that hour available since it is eaten up by transit time.

up_and_up··on Ask HN: I'm owed 8k by a startup that's going under. What do I do?
Maybe its time to level up and try using a collections agency like: http://www.olddebts.com/

Whenever a client seems to be giving me the run around I pay for a simple `Instant Collect` + `Credit Bureau Reporting` (should be around $10-$15) and its amazing how the threat of destroying someones credit can change the scenario ;)

I actually used this strategy to effectively get paid back from a law firm! No lawyer needed.

It might just put you at the top of the list of people to repay.

Not vouching for olddebts here, though I am happy with their service. There are other options.

Definitely don't give up on ANY amount of money.

up_and_up··on Credit Karma Has Raised $175M on a Valuation of $3.5B
Actually building and attaining good credit is a valuable asset in its own right. Building wealth is more than refusing to play the game and putting money in a shoebox.

Be disciplined and use various financial vehicles for your advantage.

No credit == Bad credit.

This equates to you being seen as more risky which equals you paying more interest for any loan in the future. Having good credit also afford you more opportunities.

I only know b/c I avoided holding a CC and loans for years until it started to hurt. Now I use them with discipline and for my advantage and am 810+

> It feels odd to call this a startup instead of a charity or non-profit.

Everybody is spinning their small business or new charity as a `startup`. Maybe culturally they are aligned with startup principles but my idea of startup was a small group of people looking to shake things up (a market, a technology, etc) rapidly, grow fast and cash out.

A guy selling shaving cream on etsy is not a startup by this definition.
