unxdfa··on Qualcomm CEO says he’s expecting Apple to use its own modems in iPhones in 2024
If you have enough cash and in house engineering skills to pull this off it makes sense. You get full control over the baseband firmware, power management, supply chain, cost, integration, process, security surface, everything.
unxdfa··on Null References: The Billion Dollar Mistake (2009) [video]
I can confirm I have fucked up on numerous occasions which resulted in NPEs which caused business processes to fail spectacularly and write off millions of dollars instantly. Fortunately in every case it was possible to recover, replay or repair the data so the only real cost was a little bit of reputation and time and money. But that adds up across tens of thousands of engineers, probably to billions by now globally.

I learned a lot from this and discovered that the real issue is that a process can fail spectacularly and do any damage at all. There are so many other concerns other than NPEs which need to be considered.

unxdfa··on Comment on the UK Gov Proposal to Ban “Bespoke” “Sophisticated” Encrypted Phones
Oh no looks like I will have to commit my crimes on paper, with cash and in person.

More seriously though I’m accepting this as the status quo and keep things I need to keep secret airgapped from the public internet and devices.

unxdfa··on The Camera-Shy Hoodie
Just wear a buff over your face. The batteries don’t go flat on those.
unxdfa··on Physically Demanding Work Tied to Male Fertility
Am I an outlier as I had three kids when I was a sedentary fatty?

Got super fit and healthy now and have no desire or interest in that sort of stuff!

unxdfa··on Making Go telemetry opt-in is a mistake
Good job Russ Cox. Despite initial concerns around this the right decision was made. Opt in is the morally correct choice for any software community. Notably I will opt into this where it is appropriate.
unxdfa··on UK Proposes Even More Stupid Ideas for Directly Regulating the Internet
In fintech operations. Salary is very much fine over this side of things. In fact we get paid more than our US counterparts.
unxdfa··on UK Proposes Even More Stupid Ideas for Directly Regulating the Internet
Quite happy working in the UK still. There is no brain drain past the usual one related to being a tiny island but there is a shortage of staff. And we get paid handsomely not to fuck off :)
unxdfa··on Google search for a local restaurant returns scammer’s ad as top result
Yes agree with that which is exactly what the second half of my post is about. Google should not be advertising competitors when you directly search for someone. If you search for Thai restaurant then yes. But not for a specific business. And only legitimate verified businesses which are not fronts for this behaviour.

But really, is the famous Doctorow not using an ad blocker in 2023?

unxdfa··on Tell HN: Do not store any funds in PayPal or use them for anything critical
Yes I temporarily lost £350 via paypal and eBay. I sent some amateur radio equipment to someone via UPS tracked fully insured. Was signed and delivered. The buyer decided to return it immediately (suspicious) but I had no choice. I received the item back and it had a different serial number. The buyer had stolen a working radio and replaced it with a broken one. I contacted eBay and they told me to work it out with the buyer and they couldn't do anything. The buyer did not respond and opened a case against paypal. I provided evidence to paypal and paypal sided with the buyer because as far as they cared, both deliveries were signed for. Then because I didn't have any money in paypal they took it out of my account instead. The bank allowed this and it caused an unauthorised overdraft that cost me another £30. I closed that bank account and removed it from paypal immediately.

The buyer listed the radio I had sent him immediately on eBay for way above a reasonable price. I took screenshots and made a police report. Didn't hear anything back in a week. Considered small claims but I'd have to potentially travel to the claimant's area which is a good 3h drive each way at the time.

So the buyer/reseller was in Ipswich which is 15 miles or so from my brother-in-law so he went round there and recovered it for me. My brother-in-law is an ex army (Gulf War vet) 6'5" bouncer. The guy did not argue with him. He was told he could come and collect the broken one at his cost from Bristol. He never did.

I now run a mule account on ebay managed payments and do not accept paypal for anything and do not send anything until cash is cleared from the mule account into my main account.

Edit: also worth pointing out that ebay do not allow sellers to leave negative feedback for buyers so you can't even rate or report the buyer publicly. If you leave any comments in a positive feedback other than sucking dick, they will remove the feedback.

unxdfa··on Tell HN: Do not store any funds in PayPal or use them for anything critical
Spend it.
unxdfa··on Tell HN: Do not store any funds in PayPal or use them for anything critical
This. They can and will steal money out of your account if your cards don't work.
unxdfa··on Tell HN: Do not store any funds in PayPal or use them for anything critical
Actually you don't want to use credit cards between yourself and PayPal. They play a finger pointing game that can last months. Been there. I eventually had to small claims the CC company (MBNA Europe, now LLoyds) which took weeks. They didn't contest the claim or even turn up and judgement was made in favour in their absence then they did nothing until bailiffs were appointed then wrote the whole account off and closed it. Had numerous run ins with paypal unfortunately as a seller and a buyer.
unxdfa··on Tell HN: Do not store any funds in PayPal or use them for anything critical
If your money isn't in either cash in your hand or in a fully regulated bank somewhere then you're probably fucked.

When doing business I expect to be paid by direct bank to bank transfer, regardless of how small the amount is. Even between friends, we send bank transfers. No cheques, no 3rd parties, no escrow.

unxdfa··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
Better to run docker native than docker desktop. Doesn’t leak.
unxdfa··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
I’ve run 120 containers in native docker on it and it worked fine :)
unxdfa··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
Completely agree. For me it’s a trade off. I’d rather use Linux on the desktop myself but it doesn’t work for me or the business I work for.
unxdfa··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
I understand that corporations are bastards and built on foundations of the crushed skulls of children and involuntary human sacrifice but Office on the Mac is not a bad product and is improving. But the windows version has just been around longer and had more work done on it. And don’t get me started on LibreOffice - it’s buggy as hell. Even more than Office on a bad day

I’ve met Bill. He wouldn’t be out of place among HN’s defective half: the dubious pro SaaS VC funded US university alumni…

unxdfa··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
Yes WSL2
unxdfa··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
I did for ages. But there’s an impedance mismatch for a lot of people. Sometimes it’s a square peg for a round hole.
unxdfa··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
It’s Unix but it’s not Linux. When Linux is your target it makes sense to use it on your development stack entirely. The irony being that Microsoft seem to make the best Linux OS for development for my use cases of docker / server side / cloud operations.

And it runs Office better than Linux or Mac.

unxdfa··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
In the same situation. I’ve unfortunately realised that “worse is better” applies to hardware too if it supports the software you need.
unxdfa··on Replacing my MacBook Air M1 with a ThinkPad T480
Ah ok I used them twice. Had no problems.
unxdfa··on Replacing my MacBook Air M1 with a ThinkPad T480
By the time it's out of warranty you can afford a fully working parts mule off ebay to leave lying around.
unxdfa··on Replacing my MacBook Air M1 with a ThinkPad T480
It’s fine in the UK. Not sure about mainland Europe.
unxdfa··on Replacing my MacBook Air M1 with a ThinkPad T480
Spot on.

Comparing to Apple (I run both Lenovo and apple kit) I’ve lost two bits of hardware with apple for multiple days on repairs in the UK. A friend just got told that there’s a 2 month turnaround on his custom M1 MBP 16 which has a logic board problem.

That scared the shit out of me enough to throw the money in on a Lenovo T14 gen 3 with NBD on site repairs. If I sell my apple kit I can afford to buy another identical machine and stick it on the shelf. I’m still £120 up on my mac and mitigated a whole bunch of risks.

A couple of T490’s is probably good enough for me to be fair.

unxdfa··on A pilot scheme to trail the four-day workweek in Britain deemed a success (2022)
Yes you cant just turn up and throw them all in the fire. You have to unpick them slowly. That was his mistake.
unxdfa··on A pilot scheme to trail the four-day workweek in Britain deemed a success (2022)
Yes I’ve been in three now. Running a corporate like a collection of bootstrapped startups with trusted, invested staff and autonomy is the sweet spot.

That dies the moment a large enterprise client makes risk demands. Of course the large enterprise client is a shit show inside almost universally.
