unxdfa··on High blood caffeine levels may reduce body weight and type 2 diabetes risk
We have the same thing. We’re all just old though.
unxdfa··on High blood caffeine levels may reduce body weight and type 2 diabetes risk
I’m not sure it does. I am almost completely stress free in my entire life. I drink a fair bit of coffee and red bull (both without sugar) and never have any sleep, stress or anxiety problems.

The important thing with stressors is to identify them, write them down and deal with them. By dealing with them you have to ask if you really give a crap about them or not and the answer is usually no. If it is something you give a crap about then it’s usually pretty easy to sort out by coming up with some ideas and trying them out.

You can indeed live a stress free caffeinated life.

I am currently watching other people getting stressed over something I don’t give a crap about whilst drinking my morning brew.

unxdfa··on Apple: Whistleblower about Working Conditions
Sounds like when I worked for a large defence contractor. Except they didn’t have the competence to pull it off as well.

I got to the end of this Twitter thread and basically shrugged. If you don’t like corporate policy, leave, then make reasonable comments outside of any NDA you have signed. Trying to do anything internally unless you have a senior management position is always futile. And don’t come across as a dick, which the person does here.

"It happens" is a bad defence.

In a court of law I am innocent until proven guilty.

In technology circles I am guilty until proven innocent.

That's the difference, the outcome of which is the technology provider can quite frankly fuck off.

unxdfa··on Firefox 111.0 enabled Origin private file system access
65% of people who were asked with what question and what panel and what information provided?

This whole idea is stupid. Another C program with and ability to run arbitrary code off the network written by idiots and nasty folk being given arbitrary filesystem access. Have we learned nothing? We need more controls (MAC / process sandboxing) not less.

Just because someone wants to do something to make their lives easier and asks a set of people what they want who says yes doesn't mean it's a good idea.

I say this as someone who has written desktop/web integration stuff over the years without this.

HN is basically glued to CloudFlare from a business perspective so do we expect anything else?
unxdfa··on Hetzner launches three new dedicated servers
No I've got a paid static IP which I exclusively own on a business service line.

There is no excuse for being a victim of an algorithm.

And I never get this anywhere else!

unxdfa··on Hetzner launches three new dedicated servers
After spending years with Rackspace, Host Europe and renting a cage I never want dedicated servers. That's all I'm saying.
unxdfa··on Hetzner launches three new dedicated servers
Yeah when I land on your web site and I get:

Request on Hold - Suspicous Activity Detected.
I'm turned off instantly. I'm on a static IP on a respectable ISP in the UK and I'm not waiting in a queue for 57 seconds and counting to look at the sales pitch.

Edit: so I use that time wisely to shitpost about it on HN, then check TrustPilot and I see:

"Unfortunately, based on your description (I need a ticket number or other customer information to find you in our system), you accidentally resembled an abuser."

Not a good outward appearance. I'll stick with AWS and paying through the nose.

Pro. Never tried home.
unxdfa··on Using a Mac without a network connection
Actually you can install windows 11 if the network is not plugged in. I just did it yesterday.
unxdfa··on Our production servers were suspended by Google Cloud
They are a society manipulated heavily by propaganda, run by rich elites and pushed into an unproductive war by a political dictatorship supported by the elites. Perhaps everyone should have stopped doing business with the USA for the last few decades for the same reason.

You can creatively frame a problem any way you choose.

All countries have a problem with media, elites and politicians. We should aim to solve those problems, not cut a large chunk of the planet off. They are people too.

unxdfa··on Our production servers were suspended by Google Cloud
I disagree.

I’ve hosted on AWS for ages. They don’t do this. We didn’t pay the bill for two months once because the owner of the card left. No problems. This was a small spender outfit. They could have thrown us on the street as we were a rounding error. Now we’re a big spender and we still forgot to pay them sometimes (sorry Bezos)

But some of your point is worth considering. Design for portability should the worst happen (you are cut off due to geopolitics or other problems) or somewhere else turns out to be a better deal. Stick to IaaS and portable services only.

For the moment I trust AWS though.

unxdfa··on Update to the “Samsung space zoom moon shots are fake”
No they don’t require that. I honestly, and I know this will annoy people, shoot jpeg and it’s sharp out of the camera.
unxdfa··on Update to the “Samsung space zoom moon shots are fake”
Yeah it can get quite bag. I'm right near the airport as well which doesn't help.
unxdfa··on Update to the “Samsung space zoom moon shots are fake”
I'm in the middle of London in the UK so that's pollution haze.
unxdfa··on Update to the “Samsung space zoom moon shots are fake”
Your last point is spot on.
unxdfa··on Update to the “Samsung space zoom moon shots are fake”
I think it's more difficult than that. People are intimately aware when things are not what they seem. The brain is really good at being suspicious about stuff. If you take a photo and it comes out better than you can see yourself, then questions will be asked. This discontinuity does not sit well.

As for the professionals, a lot of stuff is edited yes. But there is an art to not needing to do any editing worth mentioning. I think there's some intellectual honesty in not painting over any cracks.

unxdfa··on Update to the “Samsung space zoom moon shots are fake”
I shot this at 1/500 iso 400 f6.3 at equiv 375mm: https://imgur.com/ppj8U2Z - no edit other than crop.

I reckon I could have hand held it actually. The lens has pretty decent VR in it. Will wait until there's a full moon again and have another go.

And yeah I want my pictures to look natural.

unxdfa··on Update to the “Samsung space zoom moon shots are fake”
Yeah I can just about get a decent crop of the moon on my Nikon Z50 with the 250mm lens on it that looks reasonable, if it’s on a tripod. There’s no way this wasn’t going to be some other trickery going on.

What is worrying is why would you buy something with a camera that lies at source. When you need it to tell the truth, how do you know it will be telling it?

unxdfa··on Google over-hired talent to do ‘fake work’, claims Keith Rabois
That's fair. The point is that they are diversified thus limiting the risk of an individual company or group doing something bloody stupid. 90% is in property though.
unxdfa··on Common Beginner Mistakes with React
Ironically I opened this up hoping to see the first comment was "just don't use React" and was even more surprised that it is exactly that and also what I've been doing for a while.

I also wrote a < 0.5Kb DOM abstraction that basically just saves a bunch of typing (get element, replace element with something, go fetch some shit off the server, add style, remove style) and that covers about 90% of the "would be nice if it did this" use cases.

This all gets compiled into one binary file, resources as well, chucked in a docker container and pushed to Kubernetes.

unxdfa··on Google over-hired talent to do ‘fake work’, claims Keith Rabois
Pretty good so far. I put it all into property and ETFs and beat any market investment I would have made.

Not investing in a toxic and volatile shit show is a good investment strategy.

My father threw a lot of money into Tesla and is breaking even. His entire life is consumed with "oh shit what did Musk say now"

unxdfa··on Google over-hired talent to do ‘fake work’, claims Keith Rabois
I’m fine with the tech layoffs and “Musk being right” movement. Mostly because it has generated a large shitlist of companies I will never work for, will never invest in and will never integrate with or recommend.
unxdfa··on Google, Meta hired talent to do 'fake work'
This happened to someone I bumped into on a Meetup group last year. She'd been hired by Google for a research project. She said she hadn't done anything useful for a year and was just there to put it on her CV and was suicidally bored. I bet she got laid off recently.

Anyway it's not like it doesn't happen anywhere else. On two separate contracts I completed the work embarrassingly early and was paid to finish the contract and look busy so I didn't show the managers up or the staff on the team I was working on. We're talking really basic shit here like being hired to make a single web form that writes a row into a SQL table.

unxdfa··on I use cheap notebooks
Correct. But they are the minimum "fit for purpose" I have found i.e. don't disintegrate or soak up ink like the cheap supermarket ones.
unxdfa··on Load 'em up and throw 'em under the bus
That's an interesting perspective.
