unstuck3958··on We Don't Know How to Compute (2011) [video]
> So the computational depth of this behavior is only a few tens of steps.

One of the primary "criticisms" of pre-LLM machine learning was that it is inefficient compared to, say, a human, because it requires a plethora of examples to classify something just to match the performance of a human who has only seen a few examples.

That argument no longer holds the same value since the discovery of few-shot learning features of LLMs (though they still have a long way to go). Which makes me think: maybe the reason behind human brain's apparent "efficiency" is the complexity that hides beneath the billions of neurons we have.

Disclaimer: I am an amateur and probably have only a litte idea of what I'm talking about.

They asked for personal identifiers of 11000+ people in three years. I guess they are legally required to disclose giving away personal information.

I browse twitter from incognito (well I browse the web from incognito mostly) and I saw such sexist stuff on the frontpage after the announcement of the new women CEO.

What a shithole.

unstuck3958··on What Wikipedia Did
As someone from a country which has a requirement for all large social media companies to submit to the will of the government [1], and routinely exercises this power especially on Twitter [2] with actual real-life consequences [3], it is hilarious to me that internet censorship is still largely talked about as a hypothetical.

unstuck3958··on Things You Can Do with KDE Connect on Linux
KDE Connect is a great piece of software. Everyone I recommended it to uses it almost daily.

It makes me wonder about the state of FOSS software: there are plenty of genuinely good FOSS apps that can, in theory, be a part of a FOSS "ecosystem." But not many people actually know about them or use them.

While I am still curious to know why this is, it seems like "advertisement" is still the greater predictor of software usage than anything else (including functionality and ease-of-use). Which is sad (especially because FOSS apps get better the more people use them).

I can confirm, though it's more like 5:1 hit-miss ratio for me (specifically for the copy paste feature) but that could be because of agressive battery optimization I do. I also use it daily for effortless file transfer, and so much more: it truly has enhaced my desktop experience to another level. For example, I can play a YouTube video on my PC and have it pause when I recieve a phone call - all without any kind of physical intervention.

Makes me wonder how many more people who are waiting for AirDrop alternatives haven't tried KDE Connect. Or about the state of FOSS in general.

Also, feels good to see a fellow Kashmiri on HN :)

KDE Connect is not restricted to KDE Plasma. It's an app, so it is available for Windows, Linux, and even iOS.
unstuck3958··on Pixel Tablet
For me personally, I would definitely consider it if it comes with good custom ROM support (esp. GrapheneOS).
unstuck3958··on Pixel Tablet
> Android tablets generally feel overpriced right now for what they offer compared to Apple's ecosystem.

Is this a US-only thing? I have not been actively looking into the latest Android offering, but I got my sister a Xiaomi Pad 5 [1] two years ago, which I believe delivered much more value at that time compared to the latest iPad 10.2 I owned, at a slightly cheaper price too.

Piped works great! However it is let down by the (IMO) poor UX design. I would love for some graphics designer to step-in a create more usable CSS stylesheets for it.

Developed countries depend significantly on imports from countries with working conditions equivalent to that of a modern gulag.

unstuck3958··on The rise of ChatGPT-enabled GitHub spam
In India, there is a lot of competition in the tech field so devs often want to put open-source contributions on their resume. This definitely does not account for the majority of the spam, but could possibly be a sizeable minority of it.
unstuck3958··on Lifestyle design from first principles
It's comical how this article calls for a lifestyle design from supposed "first principles" while completely ignoring the context in which they take place. No wonder they believe philosophy to be futile. I believe we need more thinking, not less.

> What traits do wealthy people have in common? > What traits do poor people have in common?

There seems to be a subtle but profound supposition that being rich or poor is just a matter of "heuristics." Reminds me of the countless self-help books written, YouTube videos made, and Instagram posts, on habits of rich people. I don't think that is going to take you anywhere.

Seeing so many submissions related to Linux on Android makes me surprised that it wasn't common knowledge on HN.

Another such gem: userland.tech (let's you run full distros or apps on linux, including Debain and Arch). I use it to run LibreOffice on my Android Tablet.
