unparagoned··on The brain isn’t supposed to change this much
For stuff like sight things are very rigid. You will have a Jennifer Anderson neuron, that will fire everytime you see her picture.
unparagoned··on We’re all paying for someone else’s 4-hour work week, not ours
In most companies the cost for full time workers is higher per hour, since often you need to pay for additional leave, pension, rights etc
unparagoned··on Ultra-processed food targets bone quality via endochondral ossification
The macros maybe, but many of the nutrients don't. You can't get the health benefits with other foods.

Your friend is more likely to die at a younger age and have health problems when they are older.

unparagoned··on Ask HN: What's your sleeping setup(bed/pillows/sheets)?
Bamboo sheets, they are better than everything else by miles and that includes silk
unparagoned··on Apple has a decade-long lead in wearables
I've got a Samsung watch and the the heart rate monitor has serious reliability issues. Apples is not only suppose the be better but you got blood pressure and o2 monitoring. I'm definitely going to switch over in the future
unparagoned··on USB-C is about to go from 100W to 240W, enough to power beefier laptops
When I last worked with USB, there were all sorts of resistors over the pins telling you about its capabilities. I'm pretty sure usb-c has that as well. Your device should check the spec of the cable and inly draw the amount if power its rated for
unparagoned··on Hydras suggest that sleep evolved before brains
I was exactly the same, a lot of reading about sleep and strict sleep hygiene fixed it. There are lots you can do but briefly just go out for a jog when you wake up. You need the exposure to blue light to help set your circadian rhythm. The exercise increases body temp which helps bring forward your circadian rhythm. Basically your habits are probably shifting your circadian rhythm back 30min a day, and if not you can have habits which bring forward your circadian rythm
unparagoned··on Hydras suggest that sleep evolved before brains
Sleep occurs at both the cellular and organism level. Sleep is probably like getting a car serviced and cleaned. Sleep isn't just blowing up the tires, or changing the oil or cleaning the screen, it's all of it.
unparagoned··on The overfitted brain: Dreams evolved to assist generalization
Do you have any evidence for that. It's very likely you had dreams with both experiences but just didn't realise it.

Do autopilots need to be safe or just safer then people?
unparagoned··on Ask HN: How can I improve my intelligence?
I think you are right that you'd expect them to be correlated. But I think we need to look deeper at mortality rates and the amount of sleep.

Its probably due to reverse causation. If you are ill then the best thing you can do is sleep, so ill people sleep more. Its not that sleep is bad. If those people only slept say 8h then their health outcomes would be much worse. Basically if you are sleeping 11h then you should be worried about an underlying medical condition, not from the actual amount of sleep itself

unparagoned··on Ask HN: How can I improve my intelligence?
That's a good list but I have to strongly disagree with the idea that 6 hours might be enough for most people. Sleep is so important that you really should be aiming to get as much as you can. We have models for the mechanism by which lack of sleep may contribute to stuff like dementia, along with animal autopsies, coupled with the fact that people who only get 6.30h sleep per night have a higher chance of getting dementia than someone getting 8h.(there may be some negative loop stuff there, but it is a negative loop). There may be some people that can function fine on 6.30h sleep at night, but that says nothing about it being healthy. Maybe every book, and sleep scientist I've herd is peddling this pseudo science about how you should aim for 8h plus, but I doubt it. I'm sure you have some random article supporting your position but what about any actual studies showing that people getting 6h sleep is safe both in theory and practise... in any case my tip for people is to throw away your alarm clock and wake up naturally once you've had enough sleep. If you are relying on your alarm clock to wake you up then almost by definition you aren't getting enough sleep.

unparagoned··on British Virgin Islands corruption scandal threatens its tax haven reputation
I wanted to get in before the cliché comment about "legal tax avoidance" or loopholes. Pretty much anything that let's a person/company avoid paying large amounts of tax and involves complex arrangements isn't legal and isn't exploiting a loophole. What they are doing is exploiting is the limited resources of tax authorities to hold them to account. If tax authorities were properly funded you'd see a completely different story.

unparagoned··on exFAT in the Linux kernel
That's actually kind of happened. One note program is no longer part of Microsoft office anymore. Instead you are suppose to use the onenote app. It's a hassle but you can install the old program and it's still much better than the app
unparagoned··on U.S. Cyberattack Hurt Iran’s Ability to Target Oil Tankers, Officials Say
I actually thought it was just an article that tried to again make it seem like Iran was behind the previous attacks, despite there being no evidence. The owner of one tank said that the us statement that it was Iran was full of lies and didn't match any of the facts.
unparagoned··on Spotify shuts down direct music uploading for independent artists
Is this just a way to outsource quality control. Making sure meta data was correct, accurate, etc.
unparagoned··on There is free will: we make choices even if our atoms don’t
It's not saying the same thing is different, but the fact free will is an emergent concept that only works on the level of a person. There is no reasonable definition of free will at the atomic level, it just doesn't exist. Let's say a picture is beautiful. Well atoms can't be beautiful so hence the picture can't be beautiful. Beauty is a very high level emergent concept that only exist at that level. It's completely compatible with determinism but the fact its ultimately deterministic atoms at play is irrelevant. It's similar for free will, the cocomcept doesn't reply on determinism and that it's completely independent from it. It's about a person's actions not the underlying mechanism of how a person acts.

unparagoned··on Who's Behind Huawei?
Yes
unparagoned··on Rotating Black Holes May Serve as Gentle Portals for Hyperspace Travel
Nope, your not missing anything. The whole hyperspace stuff sounds like clickbait. You need exotic matter stuff with negative mass/energy stop stop a wormhole from collapsing, otherwise it would destabilise as soon as a photon enters it. This article is showing that in theory if you could keep the bridge open somehow, you could send a ship through. That's a big if

Weird headline. Could have just called it public funded technology improvement help reduce costs of switches...
unparagoned··on Lyft warns it may never make any money
Its defined by whatever accounting standard they are used. Profit is usually income less costs required to bring in that income. In your example the that surplus isn't profit. That's more of a balance sheet item, so an asset. If you have $10m in cash and buy say a factory, that doesn't effect your profit
unparagoned··on FDA approves intranasal esketamine formulation
That is exactly why there is a massive h eppidemic in the us. Drug companies lied about oxys , everyone got hooked, couldn't afford it and moved onto h. Now that's laced with fent and everyone is dying
unparagoned··on Simpson’s Paradox (2016)
First each subject you compare the chance of admission. For men when they have a higher chance of admission, even in their most advantaged subject they have a higher chance of admission of 4%. Women on the other hand have a 20%. You can't say that they are equivalent in the least. In terms of error margins, a few percent is common, from experience. You could do a stats 95 confidence style calculation.
