unnouinceput··on Forty years of programming
Same here, same setup as his 1st step. No need for fancy standup mouse, ergonomic keyboard or all that crap. This guy deserves a "your weakness disgust me" gif on his blog.
unnouinceput··on Return to Office Is Bullshit and Everyone Knows It
Form the source of the wikipedia you quoted above:

"MacKenzie Tuttle, an aspiring novelist, met her husband at D. E. Shaw, a New York hedge fund where Mr. Bezos, a computer scientist by training, had become a senior vice president.

She told Vogue that she took the position of administrative assistant to pay the bills while she worked on her novels, but she soon found herself enamored with the laugh of the man who worked in the next office over. As Ms. Bezos put it in a 2013 interview with Charlie Rose: “It was love at first listen.”

SHE pursued him, and the wikipedia is wrong in saying that she worked for him. Nowhere in the article says that. As I was saying before, she was working in the same floor, but not for him. There was never a power dynamic there, just a woman who fell in love with a man.

unnouinceput··on Return to Office Is Bullshit and Everyone Knows It
Mackenzie did NOT worked for him. She worked in same floor for different department. She fell in love with his laugh, because she would heard him laugh in the meetings in the meeting room taking place near her office. That's when she noticed him. Do watch her interviews, they are free on youtube. She's the one that pursued him, if you want to talk about a strong woman and showing initiative. The idiot downgraded, showing having brain to get money != than having brain to get women.

>This, on the other hand, feels bitter. It seems to be coming from a place of hate.

Of course is bitter. Dude said it clearly. Was hired as WFH before COVID, had challenging work, enjoyed it and then some asshole higher up, one day, decided to RTO indiscriminately for everyone.

And I didn't felt any hate, just disappointment. He was disappointed that he had to resign. Hence his rant. I would rant too in same shoes.

Erm, which subordinate was the one Bezos married?

Yahoo news is something I avoid like the plague.

unnouinceput··on Fossil versus Git
Personally I read the article. It has, in the last chapter, the following: " As of this writing in February 2020...", so yeah, written by the author.
unnouinceput··on Fossil versus Git
Lacks (2020) in title. This article is written in Feb. 2020.

You mean having privacy? I thought HN crowd is all about privacy. Also donation, as in opposite of having a gun to your head to part you with your money.

>Some folks seem to have some strong ire towards OpenAI...

Yes, they should. OpenAI IS Microsoft, never forget this. Any old timer like myself remembers the crap Microsoft pulled in 90's. And nowadays they still would do the same (and in background sometime they still do it) if they would lead in those areas. I have no love towards FB/Zucky boi, but the move to make LLAMA free is a good one. Hopefully another leak comes from inside OpenAI and we get access to everything.

unnouinceput··on Programming is hard
Something like that would fail the code review at any large organization. Why? Because ternary operator is hard for maintenance purposes so the reviewer would simply ask to use if..else syntax instead. I gather you never worked in such organization.

Quote: "The jet’s transponder, which usually helps locate the aircraft, was not working “for some reason that we haven’t yet determined,” said Jeremy Huggins, a spokesman at Joint Base Charleston.

That's such a convenient event, isn't it? I mean, this screams of a middle manager screw-up and what is the best way to cover your financial losses (read embezzlement) other than staging a bank robbery, a fire or losing a jet? Yeah, that's my 2 cents conspiracy theory.

unnouinceput··on How Instagram scaled to 14 million users with only 3 engineers
Also this was in the days before it was acquired by FB. Hence why only 3 was need it.
unnouinceput··on Unity’s new pricing: A wake-up call on the importance of open source
>...for a mobile game engine.

May I ask you if you ever heard of Rust? The game, not the programming language. Online survive game, which has thousands of active players every single day since like a decade already, full 3D and quite awesome graphics I'd say. It's written in Unity.

It's wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rust_(video_game)

unnouinceput··on Bug in macOS 14 Sonoma prevents our app from working
The lack of unification between NT and Win9x before XP was abysmal. Basically you had to have 2 partitions, one for gaming, one for business. NT was unable to have games, Win9x was unable to be useful for business due to sheer blue screens. So yeah, I include NT 3.5, NT 4.0 and W2k in that shitty phase as well. I know it very well because I've lived through it. XP ended that. Hence why, after 20+years, you still have the majority of ATM's and plenty of other KIOSKs around the world still running XP.
unnouinceput··on Bug in macOS 14 Sonoma prevents our app from working
We, the old Windows developers, welcome you, the current Apple developers, to the 90's, when Windows was shittier and shittier with each version. Get ready for the next decade when workarounds and basically underground techniques will be your only survivability.

As MacOS becomes more popular, it seems it has to go to this shitty phase, as Windows did back in the day. We got rid of this phase with Windows XP release, so around 7 years. For you, who knows, hopefully shorter.

unnouinceput··on Any sufficiently advanced uninstaller is indistinguishable from malware
I did that in my first years of creating uninstallers. But I was unhappy with the solution. Too much convolution, extra stuff to take care, etc. So then I was like "why can't I just delete myself at the end of the entire process?". I mean you can definitely unlink yourself (see Unlocker utility) using same API's. Except I started to run into faults. For some reason, on some systems, this was a bust. How I am writing my self-deleting uninstallers nowadays? Very simple. Create a temporary removable drive in memory (see RAMDisk), write the 2nd part of the uninstaller there, then at the end of the process corrupt that disk intentionally. It will "nuke from orbit" and leave no trace.
unnouinceput··on Any sufficiently advanced uninstaller is indistinguishable from malware
Does that means the corollary: "Any sufficiently advanced malware is indistinguishable from an uninstaller" would be true as well?

I mean can you write a simulation of an uninstaller to create havoc on target's system and still remain "the good guy, the OS is at fault" type of situation when you write a malware?

unnouinceput··on UK pulls back from clash with Big Tech over private messaging
I really wish this was a thing. No encryption, or a weak one, or backdoor with government keys that gets leaked (they always leak). Then use those to really spy and watch a firestorm of publicly washed clothes scandals. I really want that. Then, maybe then, the idiots idiots in parliaments around the world will stop this idiocy once and for all.

Imagine nuclear secrets being accessed by every grandma on the planet, that would be laughable. Or the politicians payments to their who...i mean deluxe escorts.

unnouinceput··on NASA officials sound alarm over future of the Deep Space Network
While in the article said "8k video", I suspect he meant 8k live streaming. Which means right now or lose it forever. You can do hybrid if you want. Local cache on hardware that records on 8k, and streams live to 1k, so bandwidth is not exceeded.

unnouinceput··on Reasons to replace advanced search with filters
It depends on the situation. I absolutely believe the article's author would choose advanced search over filters when the list is long and the load is slow. In that case is best to give the user an advanced search possibility first, and maybe filter after that. Think Amazon's style, do you really want to wait 2 minutes to get all video cards when entering that category and only after that to filter after 4090 ones?
unnouinceput··on Prisoners of Google Android development
the current system is already like this if you want to do sideloading/jailbreak/root of your devices. But that was the idea behind these stores: 'don't be like Microsoft and get viruses, we will make sure nooo malware ever enters our stores", which ofc is such a BS.

As for the developer in the story, he could've just make this a .pkg to be sideloaded by their clients, circumventing Google altogether.
