unkown-unknowns··on Apple Open Sources iOS Kernel
This should not be flagged. The title is correct. There is code specific to arm and arm64 in the repo, whereas previously the public source code releases were only i386 and amd64. Apple has open sourced the iOS kernel. Please unflag.
unkown-unknowns··on How the Catalan government uses IPFS to sidestep Spain's legal block
It took a very long time to load the page. Consider implementing some caching if you haven't already.

Like they say; "The best time to buy bitcoin was yesterday. The next-best time to buy bitcoin is now."
unkown-unknowns··on Theano is dead
From the link:

> After almost ten years of development, we have the regret to announce that we will put an end to our Theano development after the 1.0 release, which is due in the next few weeks. We will continue minimal maintenance to keep it working for one year, but we will stop actively implementing new features.

Summarizing this as "dead" is not hyperbolic IMO.

unkown-unknowns··on HAProxy vs. Nginx for load balancing (2016)
I was actually asking about the difference between the two exporters mentioned in the comment I replied to but thanks anyway.
unkown-unknowns··on HAProxy vs. Nginx for load balancing (2016)
Is there any noteable difference in overhead between the two?

Is there any difference in what data is able to be exported?

unkown-unknowns··on Pollen: the book is a program
The idea of literate programming is to write explanations of programs in human language as the primary form of communicating what a program does to others.

OP link is about using code to create a document.

Probably you could use OP tool to write literate programs but that is not the primary intention.

unkown-unknowns··on Show HN: Logo Crunch – Multi-resolution logo maker
I am curious to know, does the HN software have an automatic trigger for comments that mention "title" or is it more a case of mods looking at the front page every now and then and if a comment about the title is sufficiently highly voted in a frontpaged post you look into it and make a decision?
unkown-unknowns··on Paying top employees the highest salaries in the market
> [...] were also bug contributors. It's also worth nothing [...]

I think you have a couple of typos here. Probably you meant to say "big contributors" and "worth noting".

unkown-unknowns··on MathML is a failed web standard (2016)
> Btw, I don't think parent poster was talking "semantic web" at all, as I read it at least.

Correct.

unkown-unknowns··on The History of Email (2016)
> they don't have APIs AFAIK

They don't have public APIs you mean. With a bit of effort you could reverse engineer what their app is doing. The real pain is maintaining it, keeping up with changes. Hence why nobody bothers.

unkown-unknowns··on MathML is a failed web standard (2016)
The problem with LaTeX is that it still mixes content and styling.

For example, when I've got a final answer I have a macro that I've named "fa", which will insert double underline. This is an attempt on my part to give semantic meaning to the final answer. However, since that macro is mine and not standard it doesn't help much in the grander scheme of things.

LaTeX should have had an absolute separation of style and content.

unkown-unknowns··on Winamp2-Js: A Reimplementation of Winamp 2.9 in HTML5 and JavaScript
> Deer Park is the codename for Firefox 1.1, to be released in September

Anyone remember Phoenix 0.1.0? Phoenix became Firebird became Firefox.

unkown-unknowns··on Winamp2-Js: A Reimplementation of Winamp 2.9 in HTML5 and JavaScript
LMB means left mouse button. I remember first time I saw someone say LMB without explaining what it meant I was really confused.

unkown-unknowns··on Magic Sudoku – Solve Sudoku with the power of AR
I think what parent meant was that the word magic was removed from the HN post to make it less sensational, but that whoever removed that word overlooked removing the word "like".
unkown-unknowns··on To type or not to type: quantifying detectable bugs in JavaScript
Tab completion is often a small subset of code completion. When I think of tab completion I think of it being able to complete something you start typing based on what it knows to exist, but rarely does it understand much context.

Code completion meanwhile knows context much better.

unkown-unknowns··on We’ve Raised $60M in New Funding
If someone on Patreon becomes really popular then Patreon could earn good money from that without changing their fee structure. It could happen. But I wouldn't bet on it.
unkown-unknowns··on Implement Tcl in Tcl (2007)
If you've implemented it in itself once then you've also implemented it in itself an infinite amount of times I think.

unkown-unknowns··on Quiet Hacker News
I was asking genuinely because I could not tell whether the person I was replying to was being sarcastic about the idea of not having comments or if they just didn't make the connection between "quiet" and "no comments".
unkown-unknowns··on Quiet Hacker News
Wait, are you being facetious or did you not catch on to the fact that the comments not being included is what makes it "quiet HN"?
unkown-unknowns··on Discover the world of microcontrollers through Rust
https://www.newbiehack.com/MicrocontrollerTutorial.aspx is an ok (not great but not bad either) way to learn about micro controllers. We used this site in a course I took.

YMMV though. People in my class who lacked the experience I had with C and C++ from before had to struggle quite a lot.

unkown-unknowns··on Fingerprints are usernames, not passwords (2013)
If you never use your password do you then expect to remember it?
unkown-unknowns··on BrandColors – brand color hex codes
> I'd like to see the logo

Me too. When I think Adobe, I think red and white. This site excludes white and additionally has a bunch of other colors.

Alibaba is orange and white to me. The OP site has only orange.

unkown-unknowns··on The Man Behind Windows PowerShell
At first I was a little annoyed that (on mobile) it didn't tell me the length of the interview.

Had I known how long it was before I started listening I probably would not have listened to it.

I am glad that I didn't know, so that I began listening.

Once I started listening it didn't take long before I was convinced that I ought to listen to the whole thing.

Very interesting interview.

Very glad they provided a transcript also. Having both the text to read and their voices to listen to was much more enjoyable together than would either of those have been alone.

There were some typos here and there in the transcript but since I am on mobile I didn't dare leave the page to point them out. Someone else will have to take care of that to have them fixed. I do remember one error that occurred in a couple of places was that the transcript said SANS instead of just SAN (singular) or SANs (with a lower-case "s").

unkown-unknowns··on How JavaScript works: memory management and common memory leaks
Probably part of the problem is also the fact that JavaScript is a very dynamic language.

I think even the JVM team would struggle to improve on the state of the art in js vm tech. Their experience in making JVM might not be all that useful in the context of js.

unkown-unknowns··on Chelsea Manning: The Dystopia We Signed Up For
> Arab "Spring", which has most certainly been a disaster for America (and the people in the region too)

Wait, how so? Asking out of ignorance - I thought the Arab Spring was a good thing for the region.

unkown-unknowns··on ASCII and Unicode quotation marks
Well, we also use the dollar sign to signify a variable in bash and PHP even though we aren't talking about an amount of USD. Likewise we use single and doublequote to mean special things.

HTML tags have nothing to do with less than or greater than, yet here we are.

In conclusion, it's simply convenient to use the standard keys we have and to use the symbols that are on it to mean something different from their original meaning in order to be able to express ourselves succinctly so that we don't have to spend so much time typing as we'd otherwise have to.

Of course you could always buy yourself an APL keyboard and write your programs in APL and use an APL REPL as your command line instead of using bash ;)

unkown-unknowns··on Announcing Caddy Commercial Licenses
> Keep in mind that modifying the source is required to plug in any plugins, which people tend not to want to bother with.

I've only ever used Caddy without plugins, so I'm not familiar with how it works but do you mean that plugins in general must be enabled or that the specific set of plugins I want must be compiled in? If the latter then I think they are not so much plugins as some kind of extension.

Please clarify, thanks.
