unix_fan··on No science, no startups: The innovation engine we're switching off
I’m blind, and participate in a lot of research projects to create accessible technology, which are mostly done by universities. What I have noticed as a foreigner participating with US based universities is that, a lot of this research while very high-quality and very well done does not actually result in anything that the intended audience gets to use or experience. And a lot of this is due to the amount of red tape, as well as a lack of risk taking. This means that without trying to go commercial a lot of these projects end up shelved and many potential users simply never see the benefits.
unix_fan··on Meta Leaks Part 1: Israel and Meta
You can continue to do terrible things as a company, just as long as you don’t do it with Israel
unix_fan··on McKinsey unit will pay $123M to settle claims it bribed South African officials
The same happens in Latin America as well. If you want to get through the layers of bureaucracy without being stuck for years in a process, you have to pay up. And it has to be a well-connected government official. That’s mostly the reason I don’t bother with anything entrepreneurship related here.
unix_fan··on The Nonprofit Industrial Complex and the Corruption of the American City
This is extremely common in Third World countries, where I come from. In my view, both nonprofits and large religious organizations attract the same kind of people. People who want to create their own little thiefdom, by taking advantage of peoples faith and Good will.
unix_fan··on GPT-4o
That’s just one part of the issue. The other part of the issue is accessibility bugs, you would have to get the model to learn to use a screen reader, and then change things as needed
unix_fan··on Interview with a blind developer on how he works (2017)
I can’t see why that would be a Mac specific issue. I use both platforms, and it would be on the Developer to support screen readers on either platform. Microsoft Office didn’t support voiceover until 2016 for example, and you can’t really report that to apple accessibility.

Where I found a lot of bugs is when it comes to supporting web standards like mathML, and this is where I will usually switch to windows since the screen reader tends to be more flexible, and you have a lot more software focused on assistive tech.

unix_fan··on Snapdragon X Elite Multi-Core Superiority Claims over Apple's M3 Were Right
On windows for ARM there are quite a few bugs during emulation that I don’t get on an x64 based system, even while using effectively the same settings for the program. Software using custom installers will be the biggest issue, and this is significantly more common on windows than on macOS
unix_fan··on Reflecting on 18 Years at Google
As a person of color who is also disabled, I find bringing race into the discussion to be reductionist. It reduces the individual to the skin color, which is just as bad as what you accuse others of doing. People shouldn’t be judged based on whether there are enough black women at Google.
unix_fan··on OpenAI negotiations to reinstate Altman hit snag over board role
They would want a lot of control over the company
unix_fan··on OpenAI negotiations to reinstate Altman hit snag over board role
I doubt anybody else would take the same risk, not with the board still in power.
unix_fan··on Snapdragon Oryon, faster than Apple's M2 chip at 30% less power
Just geekbench, not much else.
unix_fan··on Snapdragon Oryon, faster than Apple's M2 chip at 30% less power
I'd agree, but QC isn't in the business of selling laptops directly to the consumer. If OEMs decide the platform isn't worth it for them, There's not much Qualcomm can do.
unix_fan··on Could EU force hardware manufacturers to make working drivers for Linux?
You can't really sell software for running a braille display on its own, for example. As for interest going up, I doubt that very much, as linux is still lacking good vision accessibility, such as a screen reader that doesn't brake with every update to the gnome desktop. windows and macOS figured that one out years ago, and the only decent open source screen reader is windows only.
unix_fan··on Could EU force hardware manufacturers to make working drivers for Linux?
This would be terrible for specialized hardware, such as assistive technology. Open source software doesn’t really exist for it because there is simply no interest.
unix_fan··on Be My Eyes’ AI assistant starts rolling out
I’m working on a startup that does this. look for clew on the AppStore.
unix_fan··on Be My Eyes’ AI assistant starts rolling out
The main problem with the glasses, in my view, is the cost. It means those of us in developing countries cannot afford it, meaning its only available to a select few. This seems to be common for a lot of assistive technology solutions, even software.

I think without a major consumer product as a platform, it will never reach the number of people it wants to help. AS in example take what the iPhone did to the market of braille note takers.

unix_fan··on Be My Eyes’ AI assistant starts rolling out
As a user, my biggest concern is that it won’t describe certain content, such as adult content or something that might be considered offensive.. I feel like I should be able full control over the output.

On the other hand, I’d like to be able to test its ability to describe graphics to me. If it’s able to turn graphics into an accessible table, I can browse with my screen reader that would be revolutionary.

unix_fan··on Once hailed for decriminalizing drugs, Portugal is now having doubts
I come from a developing country, and I agree. very often, the people consuming drugs come from a stable socioeconomic background from middle to upper class. When my family and I lived in a poor neighborhood, we didn’t notice anyone with an addiction problem, Perhaps one well-known case, at most. Once we started to move into wealthier, neighborhoods, however, it became far more visible.
unix_fan··on ThinMachine – A $25 thin client macOS Time Machine appliance
Do you have a ZFS pool on each drive?
unix_fan··on Puerto Rico: A U.S. Territory in Crisis
While this is true, a large part of the problem faced by Puerto Ricans is the local corruption we see in most of the Caribbean. In my country, a lot of people wish we were a part of the US, even as a territory. Mostly, not having as many immigrationrestrictions, when it comes to going to the mainland. A lot of us see Puerto Rico position, as a privilege rather than a bad thing.
unix_fan··on Tell HN: Today Is Global Accessibility Awareness Day
I think the open source community has failed screen reader users. You cannot use Linux with a desktop environment without major accessibility issues layered throughout. It’s particularly frustrating when bug reports are ignored for years and are never fixed at all. This is why I continue to prefer windows or macOS over linux.

Stuff like Jupyter notebooks are also not accessible, making it a little bit harder for visually impaired people in stem

unix_fan··on Turn ideas into music with MusicLM
The AI test kitchen app is not accessible with voiceover
unix_fan··on Bilingualism affords no general cognitive advantages: Study
Second generation immigrants struggle to speak the language of their parents, however. This happens at least with immigrants from my country to the U.S.
unix_fan··on University Student Creates Jacket with Sensors for the Blind
Also blind here, and a computer science student. Biggest problem is the funding, at least from my perspective. Assistive technology is very expensive, and producing it still is extremely complicated.

Pretty much you have to wait for companies like Apple to make things relatively cheap and widely available. For instance, the newest top of the line braille note device is still significantly more expensive than buying the latest iPhone 14 Pro, with a braille display.

If you live in a rich country, the government will pay for it. But those of us from a poor country, cannot really afford it.

insight crimecrime is a good source.

unix_fan··on Mexico's former public security head convicted by U.S. of taking cartel bribes
That’s not really a mystery. The Latin kings, MS 13, and other large, Hispanic gangs are the key to bringing drugs into the US.
unix_fan··on How does human echolocation work? (2017)
Unfortunately true. My biggest gripe with cars is the move to touchscreens. I remember being able to train myself to use a normal car radio with buttons. Now, the only way for me to do that would be to use my iPhone with my screen reader, and I usually need the driver to put the car stereo into Bluetooth mode for me
unix_fan··on How does human echolocation work? (2017)
I’m blind. I use this on a daily basis to get around. It helps me cross the street, navigate hallways, and explore new or unfamiliar rooms. Not every blind person has it, however.
unix_fan··on The importance of stupidity in scientific research
I’m 19, blind, and currently feel this way. I tried to learn new skills early on so I don’t struggle to keep up with my classmates later on. Sometimes I feel it isn’t enough.
unix_fan··on Ask HN: Can competitors catch up to Apple Silicon?
Their problem has never been technology or talent, just the fact they care a lot more about the margins they make on those chips.

The newest snapdragons have had gimped cashes for years now.
