There were summer courses for grad school. I think undergrad didn't have any summer classes. (My experience is from 15 years ago so maybe things have changed).
re: Athletics: I'm not sure I agree.
Kids that wash up out of minor league baseball (instead of attending college) end up with nothing. Kids that play college football at least have a degree from a college which is worth something.
If anything, I feel the college football players get exploited. They create a hugely disproportionate amount of value to the amount that they receive in return.
The simple counter-argument is that it is not the only driving factor. And Piketty offers no real proof (by his very lofty standards) to show that this is the principal contributing factor (which in itself would be huge).
A more interesting question is finding the 'catalyst(s)' that led to the rise of ISIS.
Why does anyone care if someone else doesn't want kids? I mean, I have kids but I couldn't give a toss if others don't want to procreate. Its not like the species is at risk.
An easy area of improvement is documentation, samples etc. They are seriously lagging behind AWS and Azure. Becomes hard to choose Google because the cost of learning is higher.
Somewhat related. "The girl with all the gifts", which is on this subject was a great read. Emotional, thought provoking in a sea of horrible zombie related writing/TV.
I never understood what was unique about this company. I worked for a company over a decade ago that did a clinical trail for a bacterial pneumonia micro-assay at Arup Labs in SLC. This seemed like the same thing but with a lot more fanfare. I called some folks I used to work with to check if I was missing something and they felt the same.
(I'm not a biologist, I wrote the software and did the stat research).
This is very cool.
I remember as a kid every time I had a cut or scrape my parents would rack their brains for the date of the last 'booster shot'. I was also told cautionary tales of tetanus seizures (?) that could break major bones because of the stress of the convulsion.
I'm curious why this is a change.org petition. She's not a government employee or organization. Is the intent to reach the board of directors? If so, why not just send a letter that's signed by a bunch of mods.
No matter which way this went this whole referendum seemed like a political stunt. It was a huge distraction, frayed nerves and made everyone more entrenched in their negotiation positions. A good deal and compromise is generally negotiated behind closed doors without making loud speeches that you can't walk away from. I feel sorry for the Greek people. They deserve better from their own leaders.
I read an interesting paper a few years back showing a correlation between low(er) rates of depression in population areas with high(er) lithium content in their drinking water.
The paper also discussed how big pharma had pushed doctors away from Li over the years towards more expensive drugs.
If used appropriately and sparingly they are very useful for many conditions. I've taken Valium and Xanax as needed for more than 2 decades without becoming addicted.
The article is very biased. Doctors don't tell patients that these drugs don't have much downside! Most of them know that benzos are not a long term solution due to tolerance.
These are always funny. Read the Risks for the S-1 of 'Restoration Hardware'. It actually goes into (alludes) the CEO's predilection for jumping into the sack with fellow employees!
I don't think its just Chinese investors. Its all investors since there are fewer better investments for them now. Prices on my street are up 250k in 18 months. And this is in San Jose. I'm not really celebrating. They could just as easily come crashing back down.
For a startup? If you are poor at networking and going to events and such I think you will get value out of it in growing your network.
Other opportunities: Depends. I think its a great idea for people who are mid level accountants, finance folk in big firms like Cisco or Google (classmates of mine) who need this to get anywhere.
For engineering, not too sure.
I started the Berkeley EWMBA (halfway through) and am bitterly regretting it (though work is fully comp-ing tuition for me). I'm going to stick it for another year and complete it.
1. It is a lot more work that you can imagine
2. You will have to learn a great deal of stuff that you know you will never use again.
The benefits you get out of it are the networking and some basic business knowledge which you could get for a lot less if you are motivated.
I'd say don't consider it unless you are getting some tuition reimbursement. Not worth the $125k-$175k otherwise.
