univalent··on Seattle C.E.O. Who Promised $70,000 Salaries Wins Suit Filed by Brother
It will surely be appealed. The 'feel good' story aside, this seems problematic. The brother owns 40% of the company and as such he can contest that the price (wages) that the majority shareholder is paying is greater than what the market commands.
univalent··on Rudolf Kálmán Has Died
RIP. For many many engineering students his work was the first introduction to something amazing that they could implement and understand.
univalent··on UK votes to leave EU
Hate to use a poker analogy but: Cameron forgot the cardinal rule of gambling. Always leave yourself 'outs'. He raised the stakes when he had little to gain (shut up some dissidents in his party?) and everything to lose. No one forced him to do that.
univalent··on David Cameron announces resignation
Outsmarted himself and fucked up royally. Time to go.
univalent··on Tesla's New Gigafactory: Stats in the Construction Permits
This is a LOT of debt to put on the balance sheet of what is (still) a young company facing new entrants into the luxury-electric vehicle market segment.
univalent··on Los Angeles is suing a landlord for evicting tenants to rent units on Airbnb
What are they complaining about. Under the new 'sharing' economy, you don't need to rent one place anymore. You can simply hop week to week from one AirBnB rental to another without being tied down. And you can also hop between jobs as you like without being tied down. This is all in your benefit. Isn't the new 'sharing economy' great?
univalent··on We shut down our startup
Shouldn't there be a lower cost way to figure out WTP, CAC, churn rate, customer purchase journey map, etc. etc. before starting a company and having a large-ish sales/marketing team?
univalent··on The Parasite Underground
Great Radiolab episode on this subject: http://www.radiolab.org/story/91951-an-update-on-hookworms/
univalent··on Buffer Layoffs
Thanks for sharing. I wish someone had given me this advice years and years ago before I sank my 20s into a soul-less corporation for no benefit.
univalent··on Ketamine lifts depression via a byproduct of its metabolism
I'm on Zoloft now as well (who isn't). But its done wonders for me even with the side effects. I suffered from actual psychosomatic dizziness and vertigo which was making life hell and it totally got rid of it.
univalent··on Ketamine lifts depression via a byproduct of its metabolism
I think it varies from patient to patient. In my case, 2 separate courses of 6 treatments resulted in almost no short term memory loss.
univalent··on The email Zenefits CEO David Sacks sent employees as it lays off 9%
"The Offer" - brought to you by the LeBron James school of self-marketing and endearing yourself to people.
univalent··on Ketamine lifts depression via a byproduct of its metabolism
I wish there was a good program advocating the effectiveness of Electroconvulsive therapy (and maybe some studies around harmful effects on long term usage). I've taken basically every drug on the spectrum (benzos, SSRIs, et.al.) for most of my life since I was a teenager and nothing helped as much as ECT.
univalent··on Gawker Files for Bankruptcy, Will Be Put Up for Auction
The size of the award is insane. Wrongful death suits are awarded far lower amounts.
univalent··on Slack Connectivity Issues
Ha! I opened HN after Slack went down. I guess I should get back to work.
univalent··on The Indian Miracle-Buster Stuck in Finland
So stupid. People would literally rather drink toilet water than accept the truth? The Indian police routinely doesn't do anything to protect people that are being attacked (physically or otherwise) by large groups because politicians pressure them to do nothing (to not lose votes).
univalent··on The Perks Are Great, Just Don’t Ask What We Do
This is like the Mickey Mouse version of the 'The Firm'.
univalent··on Google veterans head off on their own to work on self-driving trucks
Careful dude, Michael Bay might hear you.
univalent··on India orders ‘panic button’ for mobile phones in bid to protect women
This is just a publicity stunt. The country is simply too large and public spending on law enforcement and emergency services too small for anything like this to be effective. They could start by increasing the penalties for sex crimes and spending more money on effective prosecutions.
univalent··on How Kalman Filters Work
Adaptive Filter Theory by Simon Haykin is the single best engineering book I used. http://www.amazon.com/Adaptive-Filter-Theory-Simon-Haykin/dp... Covers Kalman filters in great detail. Did anyone else us it?
univalent··on Apple gets smacked by $450M e-book price-fixing fine
They probably have this in petty cash. What use is a fine of this amount? It is like fining a football player 1500 for an illegal hit.
univalent··on The First Time Texas Killed One of My Clients
Deeply moving. People fighting the death penalty in Texas deserve our respect no matter where we fall on the issue. They are willing to invest their soul in an uphill battle where the odds are heavily against them.
univalent··on Seattle Considers Measure to Let Uber and Lyft Drivers Unionize
I got a job offer at Uber ATC that was exactly that. Working on logistics for self driving cars. They have an enormous amount of money and they are throwing some of it at the problem. What use is an economy if so many people live in poverty?
univalent··on Serial podcast returns as Bowe Bergdahl talks US military 'desertion'
I'm so addicted to the sound of her voice that she could read the damn Yellow Pages and I'd listen.
univalent··on Dropbox closing Carousel and Mailbox
This stinks. I was just getting used to Mailbox. Why buy these smaller companies unless you have a long term plan on how its going to be NPV +ve?
univalent··on Chennai floods: The Hindu not published for first time since 1878
A dumb question: Shouldn't they be able to setup drainage into the ocean?
univalent··on Chennai floods: The Hindu not published for first time since 1878
My mother is stuck with some neighbors on the second floor of my house. First floor is 3/4 flooded. They are OK for now but food and water is going to become a problem if the rains don't let up :-(

My aunt had to be evacuated by boat from her place. I haven't lived in Chennai over 15 years but it is surreal to see the pictures.

Very frustrating that the government spent money on laying fiber and setting up a subway system over the past few years without doing anything to improve the drainage system. The city faces cyclones every year. This was just waiting to happen.

univalent··on The Christmas Truce of World War I
Dan Carlin's Hardcore History has a great segment that talks about this event.
univalent··on Brutal baboon battle erupts for throne at Toronto Zoo after matriarch dies
I've actually seen a group of monkeys killing one of their own. It was a bloodbath and deeply disturbing.
univalent··on Bacteria on the Brain
Prolonging someone's suffering? Giving their family false hope? Illegally test a technique/method or drug just to see if it works for someone else benefit?

If the patient's best interests are no longer the primary concern all kinds of shady things become possible.
