unholythree··on Activist arrested by London police after downloading docs found on Google search
A quick google search indicates arson is considered a violent crime in the US even though it is a property crime. I assume because of the high potential of injury or death. I do however agree with you that there are some property or financial crimes in which arresting a suspect would be warranted, especially if they had incentive to flee or intimidate potential witnesses.
unholythree··on Culdesac Tempe: The first car-free neighborhood built from scratch in the US
Yeah that makerspace rendering is insane. A sewing machine, combo wrenches, some plant in a vase, actual monkey wrenches (for time travelers wtf), and a slugging wrench like iron workers use in heavy construction.
unholythree··on Major Tea Party Group Was Backed by Billionaire Donors, Hacked Documents Reveal
Was there big money donors for the 60’s civil rights movement? I don’t think it had billionaire backing but I might be mistaken.
unholythree··on Ancient Roman ship laden with wine jars discovered off Sicily
From your Wikipedia link:

> Restoration taking place in 2014-2015 has been suspended after several major works were botched and local media brought it to the attention of the public.

That’s too bad, I’ve heard of that happening with paintings fairly frequently. I wish institutions that weren’t experienced in restoration work would just focus on preservation, mostly climate control and protection from UV exposure.

unholythree··on China quietly sets new 'buy Chinese' targets for state companies
You do get a lot of disaffected former data science majors in that scenario though. At least in the short term.
unholythree··on Looking Glass: Run a Windows VM on Linux in a window with native performance
Sort of. I bought a HP Probook laptop in 2018 and install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS which works perfectly except something minor fixed with a kernel update; however when I update to 20.04, sleep is just broken. Every time the machine sleeps it forgets that the keyboard exists. As much as I dislike Microsoft, stuff like that just doesn't happen with Windows.

I'm still suffering with Linux for largely philosophical reasons at this point, but quite frankly if I wasn't such an opinionated nerd I'd just go to a normal Windows machine at this point.

unholythree··on Looking Glass: Run a Windows VM on Linux in a window with native performance
Really, is that why Tarkov drops me when I try to start a match? At least CS:GO told me their anti-cheat hated my setup (Windows 10 in a Xenserver VM) and I was able to get a refund.
unholythree··on My business might have 32 days before it's shut down by NYC [video]
I think as a corollary it’s important to remember that “A private sector business isn't gonna send thugs with guns” wasn’t always true. Private police pushing people around was common enough in the late 19th and early 20th century. It was laws and government intervention that stopped that.
unholythree··on An Intern’s Guide to Trading
Nasdaq.com will block you temporarily for the sin of not running all the JavaScript they want. It’s pretty annoying but I guess it mostly affects users they don’t care about. I don’t visit enough to know the exact mix I’d have to allow in noscript to earn their trust.
unholythree··on Sriracha hit revenue of $150M a year with no sales team or ad spend
No, I’m pretty sure it’s getting worse. Anecdotally about 10 years ago when out-of-towners would ask where the closest Starbucks was, I’d proudly say there’s just the one at the convention center. Now my mid sized city is infested with them despite already having a few regional chains and dozens of independent shops.
unholythree··on Sorry, we replaced that old technology, “see-through glass”
Then why is it that influencers are raking in the dough? Is Madison Avenue just desperately seeking any product placement? Someone's definitely spending ad revenue on TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook.

My media consumption is similar to yours, but I think we're the outliers, or maybe we just slipped between the generational cracks of an evolving but still very consumerist society.

unholythree··on North Carolina tells retired engineer he can't talk about engineering
In New Orleans unless otherwise marked, streets with a neutral ground (median) are 35mph and without are 25mph. I'm usually pretty happy with that arrangement as both a motorist and pedestrian.
unholythree··on Bosch opens German chip plant
I remember stumbling across a bunch of pictures of Bosch getting a brand new IBM System/370-165 mainframe circa 1970 that were pretty great. I especially liked how all the IBM installers were doing manual labor with their ties on.

link: https://www.bosch.com/stories/ibm-mainframe-computer-history... but I swear I saw more pictures somewhere.

unholythree··on Don't let social media think for you
I’ve noticed a unfortunate conflation of word lynching with racism motivated homocide lately. Even from authorities (newspapers, lawyers, some state ACLU) that have to know they aren’t always the same.

I think the nuance of these specific injustices is important because the solutions are different. A killing could even be lawful but racist and therefor unjust, but that’s a distinct (albeit important) problem from mob violence or murder.

unholythree··on There are no results for tank man
That's super nutty. How would the alleged uptick in racist violence against Asian-Americans provide cover for misdeeds of the Chinese Communist Party? Over the past couple weeks many mainstream news sources are reporting the possibility of the lab as a source. In fact the lack of transparency of Chinese authorities has been a pretty universal complaint (minus WHO dithering) since jump.

I do think it's entirely possible the Asian hate fears are the sort of alarmist panic that the American media loves to trade in. I'd like to see statistics regarding violent crime reported by Asian and Pacific Islanders, rather than mostly anecdotal reporting or the dozen or so high profile attacks. I don't see this sort of breathless but shallow reporting as a conspiracy but just run of the mill bandwagoning.

unholythree··on World Now Likely to Hit Watershed 1.5 °C Rise in Next 5 Years
I saw a t-shirt down here in New Orleans the other day that read “music, culture, industry” with a strike out line through industry. It boggles the mind.

After all how will our t-shirts and musical instruments be made?

unholythree··on San Francisco’s Shoplifting Surge
What's frequently under lock and key isn't items thieves themselves want, but items that are easy to fence. A lot of people have no objection to buying say unopened, brand name, but obviously stolen laundry detergent for pennies on the dollar.
unholythree··on A Private Tech City Opens for Business in Honduras
My Grandma is from this island Roatan, the history of it is kind of interesting: The “native” islanders are largely descended from cayman islanders and long considered themselves British, although their opinion on the matter counted for little. It was a back water until it became a popular dive location relatively recently due to it’s proximity to some beautiful reefs.
unholythree··on Only 17% of consumers believe personalized ads are ethical, survey says (2019)
If I bought a vacuum I didn’t like from Amazon I’d return it thanks to their generous return policy. Targeting ads based on returns could make some sense I guess if they wanted to roll the dice on recouping losses.
unholythree··on No writer understood loneliness better than Chekhov
Man I haven’t successfully read his short story “Misery” without tearing up. The Grief and loneliness of the protagonist is always super poignant to me.
unholythree··on How satellite ‘megaconstellations’ will photobomb astronomy images

unholythree··on We should discuss soil as much as coal (2019)
I found the company helping farmers in Africa collectively build/buy silos the most surprising of these projects. As someone who spent much of my childhood in the Midwest I took for granted that silos and even co-ops would be a resource farmers would have.
unholythree··on Welders set off Beirut blast while securing explosives
I’ve heard it as the OSHA squint although I do like the alliteration of your’s.
unholythree··on That UPS you bought for your home server may not be as useful as you think
Get phase monitors for your condensing units. There’s nothing more annoying than loosing a compressor due to your poco’s incompetence when the compressor would be just fine if something locked it out as soon as the power got weird.

I did a compressor change out on a package system last year because while we apparently sprung for all sorts of other “options” on the machine apparently the line was drawn on a $48 phase monitor. Our cheaper machines had them and rode out our service being single phased, and the package units stage two was thankfully off at the time; but we still had few thousand dollars of compressor needlessly converted to a piece of scrap metal.

unholythree··on Headphones are collecting too much personal data (2019)
As an addition to you post: my wired headphones do break, but I can solder things at maybe a .1 mm scale. With wireless headphones repairability is beyond my ability in many cases.
unholythree··on Smartphone contact tracing has failed everywhere
There has to be a clever way of doing this that isn’t super invasive. Having businesses record their customers and retain the only copy seems like a good compromise except something like personal phone numbers would be abused.

Maybe best would be something identifiable only to the authorities but recorded and held only by businesses. Something like driver’s license date of issuance and first name. In theory that would be meaningless to my local coffee shop or grocer; but if I tested positive contact tracers could go there and get that info (maybe just the day of my visit, or afternoon, etc.) and then correlate and contact others who visited during that time.

unholythree··on XP Paint – A Web-Based Version of Window XP's MS Paint
I still find myself trying to do #1 frequently
unholythree··on Reddit started banning accounts that voted for content “against their policies”
That’s the most obviously problem I see with section 230 freedom of speech maximalists arguments. Who’s right is it to curtail the freedom of someone to announce their love of a some sexual performance enhancing supplement in every thread and comment section on the internet?
unholythree··on Researchers achieve optical data transmission speed of 44.2 terabits per second
You could always just put a fast NIC in those two machines and just go point to point no switch involved.
unholythree··on Experts Doubt the Sun Is Burning Coal (1863)
The issue there might be more that there is a single “publisher” in that media that gets to do all the gatekeeping. I’m sure American Scientist 1863 would have declined to publish lots of ideas, but didn’t have the market cornered.
