underlogic··on EA is prototyping in-game ads even as we speak
Look something has to be done about the constant interruptions these aggressive advertisements cause. They're breaking the internet experience and wasting an astonishing amount of valuable human life hours. They're really stealing that time. If advertising was an option, 99.9% of people would switch it off.

I think there was very little truth in your first reply it reads like an excuse for an exploitive business model. I'm assuming you're a marketer or just like playing devil's advocate.

In any case, time has come to find technical solutions to hit back at advertising to the degree the industry can never recover.

You go to craigslist, it doesn't come up to you and interfere with your activity and waste your time and sell your attention to a third party. We all know what I'm talking about here.

Here I was thinking marketers were in it for the money but now I see clearly. They're honest people just trying to help solve a problem we all have. Without advertising human beings would sit helpless, unable to discover the world around them.

Holding down users, forcing them into an activity not in their interests until they "like it".

There is no place for advertising in a civilized future. It's not Ok. It's a type of crime I think.

Just stop buying their product.

Advertising is very much an assault on the user. It's tolerated today, but let's call it what it is; brainwashing, exploitation, manipulation, theft.

underlogic··on Apple's M4 45% faster than M2, 25% faster than M3; Beats Snapdragon X Elite
"Unfortunately, to get this version, potential buyers have to skip the 256GB and 512GB versions of the iPad Pro, as Apple is pretty much forcing customers to spend a premium to get the 1TB and 2TB flavors to experience those multi-core performance gains."

So, twice the performance at twice the price. Ho hum. Is that level of performance relevant on an iPad? I don't think so, and it would be smarter to buy two of the cheaper model. Or even, spend $130 and get an android tablet that does 90% of what the iPad Pro can.

Right here. Even comes with a matte screen. Have 10.

I don't think less honest covers it and can't believe anything their marketing says after the 3090 claims. Maybe it's true, maybe not. We'll see from the reviews. Well assuming the reviewers weren't paid off with an "evaluation unit".

underlogic··on Apple MacBook Air 15-Inch M3 Review
There's a few reasons. Thinkpads are reliable and durable. Built around a magnesium alloy "rollcage". They are modular, upgradeable and simple to service and there's a detailed hardware maintenance manual for every model online. There are often a good selection of ports and the keyboards are quite a pleasure to use although not a fan of the latest keycap refresh. I run the latest Ubuntu LTS and for almost all models every device runs out of the box.

You can get a pretty decent machine for 300-500 on ebay but selecting the correct configuration is key. One area Thinkpads fall short since the Lenovo purchase is the screen quality. But the Pantone 4K option is pretty nice if you can find one. I like the T and P series and dislike the E. X is Ok if you have to carry it everywhere especially for network technicians. But Thinkpads generally aren't light and the battery life can be hit and miss. It's nice there are Xeon options but I'd expect the Intel signature hairdryer whirr on load. Most Thinkpads are quiet enough though. It's a good budget option, excellent value. A tool I think everyone should have kicking around.

What you find as a technician is that manufacturers have very different ideas about how to engineer a laptop. The worst of the worst was the Dell Latitude series which looked like it was put together with lego and superglue. I've never seen cost optimization to that degree, perhaps to their credit.

underlogic··on Apple MacBook Air 15-Inch M3 Review
Afraid not. I got a job in Uni at a store that refurbished laptops and as a perk we could take a handful to learn about / disassemble every week, on the condition they came back. Later I would provision units for medium sized companies and also developed an expensive habit of buying up every other model on ebay. It's great to have had experience with so many designs but in retrospect I should've just bought one every 3-4 years and stuck with it. I just never could be satisfied with a design but to be fair back then most had serious shortcomings

I guess today I tend to over focus on the laptop as an end where others see it more as a means. Probably won't ever be satisfied until I sit down and design my own. But the MBA 15 is very nice. Too nice. "manufactured with precision to the micron and delivered to your door straight from the factory in Shenzhen"

underlogic··on Apple MacBook Air 15-Inch M3 Review
I have the 15 inch Macbook Air M2 and would agree it may in fact be the perfect laptop, and I have had hundreds. Trouble is... I don't use it. In fact I just bought a used Thinkpad off ebay to replace it for 99% of my work.

People generally don't think cheap and expendable are features but I would argue that they are. I need a product I'm not concerned to drop or scratch or have stolen or spill a drink on. I need something I can replace without tears that I can sleep next to and use while in the bathroom. That's not an $1800 Mac

underlogic··on iPhone 15 Pro Storage Expansion – 128GB to 512GB [video]
So what? How is that additional bandwidth relevant to 99% of phone users? All they have is photos, and most of the photos sit on internal storage for an hour before being uploaded to iCloud. UHS-III goes to 620 MB/s that's more than enough. The OS would be fine with 100GB internal storage

Similar to the lightning cable, generates an artificial market. Making design choices against the best interests of the customer. Not sure why anyone would be Ok w that. Restricting users options, taking advantage really

underlogic··on iPhone 15 Pro Storage Expansion – 128GB to 512GB [video]
This is ridiculous Apple should just include a microSD slot. Who even uses 512GB of storage on a phone? It's a stupid way to try to rip off the wealthy.

It's not at all sad the movement was clearly sexist. I specifically remember rejecting a funding request from them on the basis that one day I might have a son and he would be unwelcome to learn with the group.

Maybe but you can't teach a Labrador algebra no matter how many treats you feed it. These are aggregate effects of low IQ genetic traits as they play out over generations in our capitalist society. The trauma is a consequence of poverty and bad parenting which is because of low IQ. And don't call me racist. Ask why there was no IQ test line up amongst all that visualized data

No this group wastes so much time trying to relive the 70's and 80's they're missing an even greater paradigm shift unfolding right here and now. Someone has to say enough with the tinkering already. It's a waste of time. Yesterday's people are dead. Not relevant - dead and gone. That party's over, move on. This is not healthy
underlogic··on Huawei Releases Ultra 9 MateBook X Pro with 40W TDP in 980g
well the silicon is fabbed in Taiwan if you consider that China. Electronics are assembled in China but components originate from all over the world. Common processors are often designed in the US.... that has also been known to do a little spying.

Which is not to downplay the awesome ability of China to manufacture just about anything with incredible precision and quality.

I'm surprised Huawei used Intel with management engine after China banned it across all government machines. The Kirin 9000s might well have been a better choice. Who are they selling this to exactly, and how did they get access to intel parts?

underlogic··on Herbs and Spices Might Contain Arsenic, Cadmium, and Lead
The grinding apparatus often contaminates the product. Lead gears were used to increase reliability by the British and these spice fields still use machinery they left behind because it saves transport costs to compact on site.
underlogic··on Autonomous Overhead Powerline Recharging for Uninterrupted Drone Operations [video]
Not getting that for $1500. Why spend expensive missiles on unimportant people? And of course, those leave a sky trail from the point of origin.
underlogic··on Autonomous Overhead Powerline Recharging for Uninterrupted Drone Operations [video]
Target may be able to duck in time and you'd only get one attack per drone. Maybe a gyrojet explosive tip munition with poison coating for the shrapnel, where the firing drone could time the tip detonation by tracking the projectile in real time after launch. That would be light enough to provide several shots or for multiple targets. With infrared target the jugular. Highly inconvenient to defend against with armor and the projectile will be incoming fast enough such that there's no opportunity to evade, assuming it can get in range quietly. There's a huge market for this. From nation states to divorcing couples
underlogic··on Autonomous Overhead Powerline Recharging for Uninterrupted Drone Operations [video]
For affordable long range assassination operations. Make it in clear matte plastic, quiet, low flying, add some obstacle avoidance and facial recognition perhaps. Quite a nasty package under 1500 dollars I bet. Could even be ultra small w poison darts too.
