Skype made the the first major milestone. The software and network parts were "simply working" but the hardware part, CRT displays, headsets, and webcams, were still plasticky and tacky.
That's one of the reasons why touchscreen smartphones dominated the market in less than one decade. They made the dream of "real-time videotelephony from a rectangle" come true, a dream which had been present in literature and culture for around hundred of years.
Import transaction history into spreadsheet reversing the rows if necessary to start with 1st Jan at the top. This way you can make calculations mid year or mid month then complete them after receiving full statement only by appending rows, hitherto row numbers remain unchanged.
The same here. Oftentimes Google Maps switches to most exotic language "because of reasons". Then I set it manually to my preferred language, for decades now, and it's been the same language all the time. Are they trying to say with poker face "we don't track you"? I don't think my home-grown privacy habits are that good, somehow they manage to show me an ad of "blue sneakers" someone in the household mentioned this morning.
> I must have changed that back from miles once a fortnight since Google Maps launched 20 years ago. That's 500 times. Totally ridiculous for a company who core goal is profiling their users...
Similar with "privacy popups" everywhere. Similar with every bank with "remember this device" feature. I add exactly the same device on every login, until it fills entirely the limit of allowed devices.
My IT career is rather nowhere, my glider training terminated before going solo, at least have equally cool domain. Good to know someone is succeeding overall in all these, haha. Entertaining post and engaging data presentation!
Shortcuts are disappointingly undocumented and incapable. Once had few shortcuts to push arriving text messages to multiple devices. It worked surprisingly well by creating CalDAV reminder. CalDAV reminders can be synchronised everywhere from Thunderbird on Linux, through DAVx on Android, to Outlook on Windows. Then suddently with an iOS update the Shortcuts lost permission to create reminders. Old shortucts worked but no way to create new ones. What can I do with Shortcuts right now, enable bluetooth on connecting to Wi-Fi? Why bother?
> made me walk away from Microsoft ASP.NET and start building apps on linux, realizing all those "server controls" with inline style parameters were basically the complete wrong way, the "anti internet way".
That's still online, although as an outdated relict: https://www.ajaxtoolkit.net/. There was no enterprise software without drag panel!
For a moment semantic markup and CSS had taken the lead but nowadays I don't even care enough to check what the trends are. Stopped caring around the moment of "HTML inside JavaScript" (JSX).
As his skills are at another unachievable level, how do you know if he is not taking a piss with the hints? It's like the multi-billion business founders saying "we got this idea while having having a beer and started in a garage".
Once I was stuck down a youtube rabbit hole of someone testing anti-tank portable launcher against increasingly thick ballistic glass. The conclusion was that no glass can resist anti-tank projectile. Maybe large enough Rupert's drop glass could?
I was always wondering if brains all these spiders and flies have the capability to reconstruct the surroundings in 3D like mammals do, or their sophisticated eyes are only light and motions sensors. Observing e.g. fly evading flyswatter which resembles random walk, it's likely the latter.
> The app also “triggers a text message (in real-time) to the registered owner of the vehicle, warning them that they had been found in violation of the mandatory hijab laws,
That was the tipping point in transition from "we are serious and use static typing instead of lame JavaScript" into "ok we lost control over this thing".
Honestly every time I worked on TypeScript codebase and the type definition "any" started popping out more and more often, I felt I'm starring into the abyss.
I understand the interviewer wanted to approach the problem as non decimal number of months in a year and variable number of days in a month. One day as the most granular entity. I didn't even wanted to argue over leap years and why the year 1900 wasn't one. It was consecutive meeting in a row and I was too tired for his shit.
