uncletaco··on FedEx Accused of Largest Odometer Rollback Fraud in History with Used Vans
Well what does the internet say? Do you have links or context?
uncletaco··on Text rendering hates you (2019)
One spec I've been diving into recently is emacs' skeleton auto typing engine. It has been in the codebase and documented for 30 years at this point but never saw widespread use. It was apparently was conceived as away to write not just snippets but also autoclose parenthesis and interactively fill in function or form data. I've been trying to figure out how I would go about using it as an alternative to tempel or yasnippet.

uncletaco··on Thousands of early-career NIH researchers forming union for first time
I work for a national lab and in my experience it will take a lot for someone to give up a place like the Eastbay for East Tennessee. If the national lab were near Nashville that might be different. Los Alamos has to give software developers a sizeable bonus each year just to keep them from flying to greener pasteurs in a less remote location. I know I left partly because my wife had such a hard time finding work and the remoteness made the area too expensive for what we were getting out of it socially and careerwise.

Sounds like Shipt

YouTube following in porn's footsteps I see.
uncletaco··on Advertise on DuckDuckGo Search
I use ddg solely to have bang search like in chrome without using chrome
uncletaco··on Kudzu, the vine that never ate the south (2015)
Pines, telephone poles, tractors, abandoned cars. There was a hill in Pinson, AL covered with the stuff.
uncletaco··on The Erasmus Network
Yeah that's the one. I have extremely vague memories of it but I've heard people talk about it a lot.
uncletaco··on The Erasmus Network
Top comments are in line with a movie I saw where all the kids were in Erasmus and it seemed like the ideal way to hook up/connect with potential lovers one might not have connected with in any other context.
uncletaco··on Lamest Edit Wars
Sloss at sunset is a thing of beauty
uncletaco··on Lamest Edit Wars
That isn't true. I grew up there and most of the city is residential neighborhoods surrounding a downtown that has been getting renovated and updated for the past twenty years or so. In terms of particularly photogenic places there are:

* Vulcan

* The Kirklin Clinic (designed by IM Pei, his first design I believe)

* The County Courthouse

* 16th Street Baptist Church

* Various venues along Birmingham's freedom trail

* All of the pioneer churches have pretty unique architecture.

* Railroad Park

* Five Points South

Even Sloss Furnace is a pretty photogenic ruin. Also Woodlawn, where I grew up, has seen a lot of love. I remember when it smelled like piss on 1st avenue but now it just smells like outside. And tbh I've yet to see a biker gang with an assless chaps dress code so I'm not quite sure what you saw as apocalyptic.

uncletaco··on Lamest Edit Wars
Recently somebody replaced the skyline and landmark photos of the Birmingham Alabama page with their shitty smartphone pictures from an overcast day and have cried victim because somebody called their pictures shitty. To me that's the lamest edit war because it happened in February and hasn't been resolved.
uncletaco··on PornHub blocks users in Utah, cites state’s age verification law
A whole family of them, probably. The FBI loves recruiting Mormons and Seventh Day Adventists because of those religious sects' tendency to do mission work and learn less widely used languages. I guess it didn't hurt that both shun the use of intoxicants.
uncletaco··on Automakers are starting to admit that drivers hate touchscreens
Yes, unironically. Give me tactile buttons and a near zero latency screen.
uncletaco··on Apple wins antitrust court battle with Epic Games, appeals court rules
You use IMO twice in your edit how are you not giving your opinion?
uncletaco··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
I don't think I'm the fragile one here but go off

uncletaco··on New Mexico is losing a form of Spanish spoken nowhere else
When you get away from the coasts and start dealing with domestic companies you'll start to find many people in those spaces will exaggerate their regional accents. A guy from Chicago wants you to know you're dealing with a "real" Chicagoan. A guy working out of Port Fourchon might really want you to believe they just rose from the swamp to take your phone call.

uncletaco··on Command line functions around OpenAI
At what point did we stop making fun of that 10x engineer thread and started taking it seriously? Who forgot that 10x was a silly little thing that made zero sense in the real world?
uncletaco··on The EV Transition Is Harder Than Anyone Thinks
Well I guess I'm gonna buy a Volvo and try to maintain it for the next 2 million miles.
uncletaco··on The EV Transition Is Harder Than Anyone Thinks
I don't think I'll be buying an EV for at least another 10-15 years. I usually buy used and considering the best is yet to come with EVs and it will likely be in someone's hands for a few years before it's thrown on a lot for something I'd be willing to pay I'm just not seeing one for me in the near future. I'm also not looking forward to a future where buying a used car entails having to sign up for a monthly butt heater subscription.
uncletaco··on PayPal has restricted our account after we invoiced a key containing “ALEP”
They blocked my account and now the only way I can pay my balance down on Paypal credit is over the phone.
uncletaco··on PayPal has restricted our account after we invoiced a key containing “ALEP”
I've lost jobs over getting flagged in automatic resume systems due to my last name seeming "fake".
uncletaco··on YouTube millionaires are not your friends
I loved bored apes tbh and wish they appeared in a different context. Like as a pepe alternative.
uncletaco··on Ask HN: What has your personal website/blog done for you?
What's funny about this is at the time I most trusted my online friends people who weren't terminally online felt much more vocal about online predators and scammers. Now that everyone is terminally online they don't seem to be as worried.
