Oh this old chestnut.

This is quite frankly nonsense. You have released the software to the wider world it is your responsibility to make sure it is decent. Just because you have released it for free doesn't suddenly mean you can avoid criticism.

SQL injection is such a basic thing to check there is really no excuse.

uncle_j··on Fortran.io – a Fortran Web Framework
It doesn't say that anywhere on the site or their github page.

If they've haven't got that right I would be sceptical what other insecurities are present.

> xenophobia

This is a smear to demonise leave voters and dismiss any valid concerns they may have. The UK is generally not xenophobic.

> Anecdotally, from watching shows like Question Time on the BBC, I strongly believe that leave voters are thick and we needn't tip toe around this issue.

I've watched plenty of question time and tbh the people that appear the stupidest are usually the politicians. So it is completely subjective.

> Here are two studies showing the correlation between votes and education level.

This is outright fallacious. I know plenty of people that have a PhD that can barely function outside of academia. Having a higher education level really doesn't mean much once you leave academia and doesn't mean you are any more or less informed on a particular issue.

uncle_j··on Chart: Brexit Costs Nearly Match UK's Total EU Contributions
Using the hyper-partisan guardian opinion piece as evidence of anything is laughable. It is quite clear that many here don't want to understand those that voted Leave. Instead they are quite happy to build a straw-man.

> This report includes several different surveys and opinion polls asking Britons why they voted the way they did in the EU referendum. It identifies that the two main reasons people voted Leave were ‘immigration’ and ‘sovereignty’, whereas the main reason people voted Remain was ‘the economy’.

No mention of the Bus anywhere or the NHS. So no.

uncle_j··on Chart: Brexit Costs Nearly Match UK's Total EU Contributions
Nobody I know who voted leave ever mentions the bus. Sure it was part of the "Leave Campaign" but that doesn't mean it is why people voted.

https://ukandeu.ac.uk/research-papers/peoples-stated-reasons...

Note the Bus or the NHS isn't mentioned.

I don't think that would have swayed as many votes as you think it does. England has been euro-skeptic since Henry VIII.

David Starky actually does some really good lectures about it. It is part of the Zeitgeist of this country.

> and just straight-up xenophobia.

This is tiring to keep seeing this constant smear repeated. Sure immigration was mentioned but having control over immigration isn't the same as xenophobia. I've lived in a few different countries and the UK generally isn't xenophobic.

> I think the common thing about Brexit is that voting to leave is quite likely not based in any actual reason, but is a purely emotional reaction.

Well I would disagree. There are plenty of reasons why (not taking orders from Brussels is a really good reason, especially after Article 11 and 13 were drafted and forced through the Parliament).

uncle_j··on Chart: Brexit Costs Nearly Match UK's Total EU Contributions
The UK isn't going to turn into a 3rd world country anytime soon and the Economy at the moment is still growing faster than Germany and is projected to continue after the 31st.
uncle_j··on Chart: Brexit Costs Nearly Match UK's Total EU Contributions
No it isn't. The money argument isn't a valid argument for the vast majority of people that voted to Leave. The people that voted leave just didn't think the economic argument is as important as you think it is. That doesn't make them stupid it simply means they have different priorities then you do.
uncle_j··on Chart: Brexit Costs Nearly Match UK's Total EU Contributions
What people keep on forgetting is that Leaving the EU was never about money. Micheal Caine said it best "I'd rather be a poor master than a rich slave".
uncle_j··on NomadBSD
Yes I know. I can install it fine. Do I particularly want to use a text based installer than looks like something from the 80s? Nope. I have an Amiga 1200 on my desk and that has a better installer than most BSDs. This is essentially a dead OS that fits on 5 floppy disks has a proper graphical installer and BSD doesn't. Icaros (Amiga clone OS) has a better installer than most BSDs.

Like it or not Windows with its spyware is the only Desktop OS that isn't tied to expensive hardware or has the problems of Linux (which will get worse as things become more corporate) and has decent software and hardware support i.e. my Nvidia card is supported (No Radeon cards aren't an option mainly because they tend to be garbage IMO and every card I've owned that been a Radeon has had problems). Also Windows is pretty stable for the most part even with the forced updates and annoyances of having to turn all the garbage off.

> You can usually install a DE after the initial install of the OS easily, and FreeBSD and OpenBSD at least have very nice user friendly installers.

The partitioning for OpenBSD the last time I bothered looking at it was asking me to work out cylinders and all sorts of other crap. When I was at uni and had free time I didn't mind getting the calculator out and working it all out, now I just do A for auto partition and hope it is okay (which isn't good).

I have a ISO somewhere where I scripted everything up and then one of the released broke it and I just gave up and stuck CentOS on the machine and only use OpenBSD now in VMs for hosting.

uncle_j··on NomadBSD
This is pretty much exactly what I wanted in an OS. Decent lite-weight desktop BSD with a Graphical installer that isn't TrueOS (I don't like it).
uncle_j··on Deaf man sues Pornhub over lack of closed captions in violation of the ADA
Youtube auto captioning doesn't work for British Accents especially anything Northern English, Scottish or Welsh.

The same with any voice control, It doesn't work with my west country accent.

The problem is that a lot of writing from ancient sources e.g. Bible, Confucius etc. get discounted because of the language used. If you actually think about what they actually meant at the time a lot of the time there is a lot of wisdom in it but because of the language used it is too dense for most modern readers.

Unfortunately a lot of atheists just decided they knew everything once they realised that the Bible wasn't the literal truth. Many Christians wouldn't claim that and Atheists tend to point at the likes of Ken Ham to strawman the rest of the Christianity.

However I do appreciate Christianity in Europe is very different than it is in the USA.

uncle_j··on FreeBSD is an amazing operating system
It can do the same stuff in a lot of cases. It won't scale as well but that is a different discussion. You can always find things another OS can't do.
uncle_j··on The Internet of Beefs
People replace God with something else I have noticed. Many of the Atheists in the Atheists community in the United States started a new organisation called Atheism+, which alienated a lot of group and those in Atheism+ started added a lot of dogma, which I find as someone who observed the split from the outside in the UK to be somewhat ironic.

I am not religious myself (but I am slowly having a greater appreciation of religion as I get older).

uncle_j··on FreeBSD is an amazing operating system
Untrue. It works better than most people give it credit for.

I run quite a lot of stuff on OpenBSD and it works for the most part fine. Sure if you are running Netflix or something at mega scale it probably won't be any good, but it works quite well for a lot of hosting scenarios.

I can make a pretty decent desktop OS as well.

uncle_j··on The Internet of Beefs
Well it is part of anti-fragile thinking really.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antifragile

I run several discords and forums and I allow a certain amount of hazing to go on. This has a positive effect in some ways obviously has some negatives.

It filters out at lot of "normies". I don't want people who are easily offended on my forum, if you want a mod to protect you, you can go elsewhere. It also immediately filters out the morality police instantly.

> Isn't the entire point of a community to have rules on how to behave inside or else we are kicked out?

We are typically talking about nations and states (which aren't necessarily the same thing). You are born into it and typically normally stay within it for the majority of your life. Community is one of those words that are commonly abused these days to the point it doesn't really mean anything.

uncle_j··on Ask HN: What are the best unknown books you have read?
Jaron Lanier's You are not a Gadget. It really changes your ideas about software and I really wish people would read it. Especially regarding Open source and regarding design.

Keep in mind It isn't a programming book though and it really shouldn't be read as one.

uncle_j··on An alternative argument for why women leave STEM
No you are accusing me of racism when I made no comment about race what-so-ever. This "well you are secretly talking about black men" is you inserting your own prejudices and assumptions into something I've never said.

This maybe be an American thing. I am not from the US, I've never been to the US so I don't know. There are plenty of groups of yobs in the UK in poorer areas. Outside of London and the big cities these tend to be white. In my own home town (which is 99% white) there are 4 or 5 problem areas where you don't walk through at night because you get surrounded by youths. It happened to me at least once or twice when I was in my 20s and I only got left alone because one of the guys knew my brother.

I get so bored of this "well you secretly meant something else because I want to label you a bad person".

uncle_j··on An alternative argument for why women leave STEM
Not at all. I should have expected such a reply though tbh.

Many men work long hours and miss out on their family time. Also men typically work more dangerous jobs and are more likely to die on the job. They are also more less likely to win custody in separation. Men are more likely to commit suicide. Nobody has it easy and your sort of glib remark that ignores all the issues men currently face isn't helpful.

uncle_j··on An alternative argument for why women leave STEM
Fair enough.

> If there was a young guy dressed in sports gear and appeared to be somewhat of a lout, no matter what the colour of his skin I would cross the road.

I didn't say anything about Black men. I said if I saw young men in General that looked like louts I would be wary.

uncle_j··on An alternative argument for why women leave STEM
> To a degree, yes. But are you really trying to pretend it's already perfect?

Perfect is the enemy of Good.

> Again, it could be worse. And I'm not trying to meddle in your life. If you and your SO want to live by traditional roles, that's great. But I don't want those thrust on (and thus being meddled with) my life. And I don't want to live in a society that doesn't even try to improve anymore.

Everyone is trying to pin an opinion to me here because I am just questioning the underlying assumptions. I don't really have one other than "You can't have it all" unless you are extremely wealthy or extremely gifted.

> But I don't want those thrust on (and thus being meddled with) my life. And I don't want to live in a society that doesn't even try to improve anymore.

Neither do I. However there will never be a utopia. I find it actually pretty immature to think that you can make everything perfect, there are trade offs to everything.

> Well, the author is saying that she is considering giving up her career in reearch which she very much wants to pursue to have children because she can't find a way to reconcile the two.

I disagree. Unfortunately you have to make decisions in life on what you want to prioritise. You can't have your cake and eat it.

Also I don't consider having to make a choice harmful. Being harmed mean things like being assaulted, having your house robbed, being abused by your spouse. What it does not mean is coming to realisation that you may have to make a choice between family and career.

You know what does allow you to have both, wealth.

uncle_j··on An alternative argument for why women leave STEM
It isn't my assertion. The crime statistics in both the UK and the USA back this up. It is something like 96% of all prosecutions of sexual assault are men.

EDIT: In fact it is higher at least in the UK

> In 2011, males accounted for the vast majority of prosecutions for sexual offences (98.2 per cent).

uncle_j··on An alternative argument for why women leave STEM
It isn't seen as "real" work by other men. Men have been the bread winners for almost all of human history and thus other men don't think they are doing their bit.
