unangst··on A 10B Pixel Scan of Vermeer’s Masterpiece
Brilliant. Looking forward to this new documentation technique for irreplaceable treasures.
unangst··on Everything you need to know to design your own CNC router
Best advice I read before I purchased my CNC: “buy your second machine first”. Five years in and I’m still growing into my 4’x4’ CNC (CNCRouterParts/Avid CNC). Love this thing, only thing I wish for is more time to use it.
unangst··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project

unangst··on US Dept Treasury seeks feedback on its proposed (privacy invasive) crypto rules
Rushed oversight of a multi billion dollar, complex marketplace shows a significant lack of insight. Long live crypto.
unangst··on Automate any tasks that require multiple entries of data in a browser
On mobile as well - pricing and plan tiers don’t seem to exist yet. Small SaaS companies need to cast a wide net when it comes to onboarding users - every new account should be free and easy. When people sign up, there should be five simple boilerplate examples of your AI tool so they can immediately test as a proof of concept. (Hook them at the moment when their interest has peaked and before they hop to competition.) New user can then develop their own task and run it 99 times at no charge. The path to profitability comes once they have tasks, find them useful/ depend on them, see the value of paying and then subscribing (aka your residual income machine).
unangst··on Attention K-Mart Shoppers: Piped Music Collection on the Internet Archive
K-Mart’s only Black Friday Instagram post was a picture of an end-cap featuring Spider-Man, Frozen and BABY YODA masks. https://twitter.com/unangst/status/1332526873130229760?s=21
unangst··on What Does Trump Have Against TikTok?
Trump’s fallen for one of the two classic blunders! The first being never put self above the American people but only slightly lesser known: never go in against the TikTok hive mind when RE-ELECTION is on the line!
unangst··on US travel firm $4.5M ransom negotiation open chat
Feds = mixers
unangst··on Siri, What Time Is It in London?
Siri needs to listen to a user’s response after presenting answers. The user hive mind would clearly flag problematic replies worthy of further examination.
unangst··on School districts are sending WiFi-equipped buses to poor and rural neighborhoods
WiFi is an essential utility in 2020. When we shut down schools for Covid19 and scaled up from 7 to 11 grade levels of students using Chromebooks at home that was a major struggle for some families. It’s apparent that a number of families -esp. those with younger kids (new Chromebook recipients) or free/reduced status live in a “digital desert”. Subsidized housing /trailer parks here don’t have WiFi. For many of these families paying rent and putting food on the table is a major struggle. Busses are a creative option but we don’t have a good “unlimited data” provider for hotspots. One hotspot loaned out had 130GB of use for the month. It was used for two students and 6 additional family members.
unangst··on An ARM-based MacBook SE could destroy Chromebooks and mid-priced Windows laptops
Chromebooks hold the trifecta: - K-12 market share +60% - G Suite ecosystem (admins/users) - Pricing (Sub $180 HP G8 (AMD))
unangst··on A Look at a Vintage Sony CD Burner
When vintage CD burner linkrot happens - does it even make a sound?
unangst··on Disney+ streaming uses draconian DRM
I like to think that if Disney+ doesn’t work on Chromebooks, the “freshmen hivemind” (aka all of the freshmen) will solve it by complaining to Disney relentlessly. Seriously, not sure if Disney has thought through the market penetration Chromebooks have in the K-12 market AND the correlation between those students/districts and discretionary income for “yet another streaming service.”
unangst··on Why a ‘paperless world’ still hasn’t happened
Analog will always be practical.
unangst··on How to Learn Efficiently
Taking good notes on paper is lost art.

In college, I returned a textbook before I opened the shrink wrap when I realized the student next to me was highlighting verbatim from the textbook what the professor was talking about. Writing everything down saved me >$100 and earned me an easy A.
