I don't have an iMac, so I can't say :)

But seriously: IMO, that's where the market is heading.

umsm··on Google Chromecast
Does anyone know if this is actually powered solely by HDMI:

I'll buy this once there is wide adoption. I would like either a Bluray player or VLC to support this.
umsm··on Embrace the desire to make money
In all honesty, you may not get a chance to leave for your second home when such a situation arises.

Poor mans solution: keep in touch with family in other nations.

umsm··on Embrace the desire to make money
Is it just me, or am I missing the point of this article. I have yet to meet a person that is embarrassed to make money. Everyone wants and needs to make money, because without that fundamental goal, nothing else in the business or venture is possible.
umsm··on Sneak peek of Macaw – a code-savvy web design tool [video]
I don't think most people will design a cnn.com on a regular basis or from the ground up.
umsm··on Leap Motion Has Launched
Off topic: But I really like their site design.

I am imagining a layout similar to an ipad, just for a larger monitor. Apple is slowly moving their desktop OS to a mobile-like experience.

The hardness doesn't mean that it won't break or crack. The only difference is that in low-impact situations it won't scratch as easily.

I love this concept, but I can't help but think:

If apple releases the next iphone with an hdmi compatible connection, that would eliminate the benefit of this, no?

I doubt you can "join" PRISM. You're forced in.

Also: Your website is hard to navigate. I wanted to see how much it costs, and I couldn't find a direct link. I clicked a buy link and then subsequently found a "go green" link which finally allowed me to see the product.

Just an observation.

umsm··on Show HN: Better SQL group by date
Do you happen to know the most elegant solution to this problem?

Convert the date to seconds since date X (or unix timestamp / 60) and divide by the number of mins you need and convert to int.

umsm··on San Francisco, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down
Not everyone likes living in apartments.

Not everyone thinks it's a wise choice to spend as much as a used house on a new condo where it's hard to find parking.

Not everyone likes living in a cement jungle.

Not everyone likes to have to turn down the volume of a good movie because or their neighbors.

If you want to buy an all electric car, you think you can plug it in on the street?

There are many reason why owning a home is a good idea. The best option is owning an inexpensive home in a market with reasonable prices and a decent income.

umsm··on How Driverless Cars Could Reshape Cities
You are assuming a society where everyone shares everything. I don't think that's likely with the introduction of cars that drive themselves. Most early adopters may not be "sharers" either, so they may not push the technology in that direction.

I think jellicle is right, that this invention can cause just as much harm as good.

When intelligent people make decisions, they consider the worst and best possible outcomes.

Just curious: Does communication need to be done instantly? Couldn't people communicate via something like packages sent via mail or persons traveling between countries?

I always assumed that when these groups communicated, the information was not time-sensitive. Plans can take months or years to discuss or finalize.

Also: Wouldn't it be feasible for communication to be done on a private/custom platform connected to the internet, yet located in a country where the US has no control?

umsm··on Recursive Postgres Queries
In my experience: most people that don't know proper DB design and SQL will do two things:

- Over-utilize stored procedures, views, etc.

- Implement many obscure "hacks"

There is nothing wrong with using built-in database functionality, but it can be over done.

Yes. I've been to many places where people were amazed with a US passport. They told me they have never seen one before in their lives.

umsm··on Nginx for Developers: An Introduction
My experience is that every host has it's pros and cons. I never trust these types of statements.

Just because you didn't perform backups, it doesn't mean that you should blame the host.

Even the best-of-the-best hosts will fail, but thing to consider is how fast can they resolve issues and are they proactively trying to improve.
