umeshunni··on How Amazon built an EV charging network in two years
Well, Congress has spent $7B on chargers with not much to show for it. . https://www.politico.com/news/2023/12/05/congress-ev-charger...
umeshunni··on An electric new era for Atlas
> But will they be making car parts? Almost certainly.

Worth calling out that Hyundai is a major investor in Boston Dynamics.

FTA: This journey will start with Hyundai—in addition to investing in us, the Hyundai team is building the next generation of automotive manufacturing capabilities, and it will serve as a perfect testing ground for new Atlas applications.

umeshunni··on Linwei Ding was a Google software engineer. Also an alledged prolific thief
The usual formula for clickbait articles like this is to just say "He was a Google engineer. He was also a prolific thief" so that you don't get any information from the headline.

In this case, the editor has made an explicit decision to use his name to maximize outrage.

umeshunni··on Astronomers find 49 galaxies in under three hours
Information on how this detection was done (from the original paper)

The raw data were transferred to the ilifu supercomputing cloud system and reduced there. Bandpass, flux, and phase calibration, along with self-calibrated continuum imaging, was performed using the PROCESSMEERKAT pipeline,1 which is written in PYTHON, uses a purpose-built CASA (McMullin et al. 2007) Singularity container, and employs MPICASA (a parallelized form of CASA). Data were at this stage rebinned by a factor of 4 (i.e. to ‘8K’ mode, 104.49-kHz wide channels), and the 1304–1420-MHz segment of the L band was extracted for the results presented in this paper. Model continuum visibility data were subtracted from the corrected visibility data using the CASA task uvsub. A second-order polynomial fit to the continuum was then calculated and subtracted using the CASA task uvcontsub for all channels to remove residual continuum emission from the spectral line data. Finally, spectral line cubes were created using tclean with robust = 0.5 and no cleaning. The RMS per 104.49 kHz channel was consistent between 1304 and 1420 MHz with the per-channel noise of 0.16 mJy beam−1 at the centre (1362 MHz). All channels were convolved to a common synthesized beam of 14.0 × 9.8 arcsec2 at a position angle of −20 1.

umeshunni··on A crowd destroyed a driverless Waymo car in San Francisco
San Francisco seriously needs a reboot. The decline in law and order started at the top in the post Ed Lee era and it's been a downward spiral since COVID.

While the administration has started trying to promote "SF is back", events like this demonstrate that things are getting worse, not better.

umeshunni··on Lessons Learned from Payments Startups
These are great lessons from an engineering perspective. From a product perspective, I've learned 3 hard lessons:

1. Fraudsters will find your product and abuse it before real users do. If you see a sudden spike in usage, it's probably fraud.

2. Real users are very emotional when it comes to their money, even if it's a "low volume transaction" like $20. Anything you build that introduces friction between them and their money will get your support team yelled at.

3. Regulators and banks are suspicious of you, for lessons they have learned from 100+ years of balancing lessons 1 & 2 above.

Balancing 1, 2 & 3 is an art and the difference between building a successful product and failure.

All the cute UI and funnel analysis you do breaks when it hits fraud, user emotions and regulation.

> why sanctions were so effective at harming the economies of countries like Venezuela & North Korea but so much weaker against Russia.

Not any in depth analysis, but I'm guessing:

1. Size of the economy (Russian economy is 3x Venezuela)

2. Diversity of the economy (Venezuela is primarily oil, Russia has a diverse industrial base, defence, agriculture etc)

3. Ties and trade with countries not participating in the sanctions (Russia trades with China, India and ME countries).

umeshunni··on Hertz to sell 20k EVs in shift back to gas-powered cars
Polestar 2s can't be charged at a supercharger, can they? At least they can't in the US.
umeshunni··on Hertz to sell 20k EVs in shift back to gas-powered cars
I had a mostly great experience with Hertz Polestar in Switzerland. Easy to drive, did well on the road.

The most painful part of the experience was attempting to charge it before returning it. Finding a compatible, working L3 charger was very difficult, even in Zurich and the experience of downloading an app to start the charging process was terrible. It of course, didn't accept my non-Swiss credit card and I had a get a local friend to help with the payment part.

umeshunni··on JAL A359 at Tokyo collided with Coast Guard DH8C on runway and burst into flames
Fascinating:

The accident became a watershed for global aviation regulations, which were changed in the aftermath of the accident to make aircraft safer. New requirements to install smoke detectors in lavatories, strip lights marking paths to exit doors, and increased firefighting training and equipment for crew became standard across the industry, while regulations regarding evacuation were also updated. Since the accident, it has become mandatory for aircraft manufacturers to prove their aircraft could be evacuated within 90 seconds of the commencement of an evacuation, and passengers seated in overwing exits are now instructed to assist in an emergency situation.

Cat6 and PoE to each room. Unifi Dream Machine Pro in a rack in the garage and Unifi In Wall APs (with ethernet out) in each room.

They were easy enough to swap out and upgrade to Wifi 6 when that launched.
