ultramancool··on Torrent Site Founder, Moderator and Users Receive Prison Sentences
Yeah, if your rationale isn't "it's easy and cheap", you're probably full of shit.

When it's to the point where I can push a button and have a TV show pop up on my NAS viewable on all my devices in a few minutes (yay Sonarr) or try to find somewhere to go buy it in some weird DRM-encumbered form that I can't even copy to my phone, well, I know what I'm doing.

I can't be assed to pay for things anymore. My sheer laziness is more valuable to me than other people's hard work and I won't even try to deny it, put me in front of a computer and I go into complete utilitarian mode.

This probably applies to more people than will care to admit it and it's exactly why the "piracy is a service problem" attitude is the only one to really put a dent in piracy in the past decade.

ultramancool··on Why the Apple II ProDOS 2.4 Release Is the OS News of the Year
Sounds similar to the China Dos Union MS-DOS "7.1" which used the DOS from Windows 98 and included FAT32 support, long file names and a CD-based installer.

ultramancool··on Qualities of clean code
This is why I frequently ask up the chain to confirm requirements in a "is it ever possible we might want to do X?" way quite often. Getting outright "no"s will often help to simplify your design and if it comes back to bite you in the ass, you just tell them you asked and will now need additional time to redesign and refactor.
ultramancool··on Qualities of clean code
Well said.

I was recently passed off a project from someone who didn't have a development background but had been working on C++... the amount of copy-paste, repetitive if statements and fixed length arrays makes the original code almost completely unusable and I was forced to suggest a total rewrite.

ultramancool··on Pardon Snowden
Well... that's one interpretation of it I suppose...
ultramancool··on Arch Linux adapted for Windows Subsystem for Linux
I don't think that's necessarily true, I use Synergy on my desktop - 2 machines, a windows box for gaming and windows dev and a Linux box for most general uses including most dev work, ops work on servers, etc.

Something like WSL attempts to reduce the desire for this setup. Having things like real openssh work properly without cygwin is a major plus in my book.

ultramancool··on Pardon Snowden
Reminds me of Psycho-Pass where everyone is basically assigned a criminality rating and you're arrested or killed on the spot if it gets too high.
ultramancool··on Falcon – a Chrome extension for full text browsing history search
Yeah, might work if you have a bookmark or something which would store a title locally though.
ultramancool··on Why there is no Facebook killer: the death of the P2P dream (2014)
Thunderbird by default doesn't load external web content, you have to explicitly allow it.
ultramancool··on Lifelogging is dead for now
Check out librevault, it does encrypted file sync using a DHT to find peers, allows for encrypted-only nodes which cannot decrypt your files (so you can throw them up on cheap VPSes, or friend's machines without worry) and in a nice open source package. Only catch so far is that the file indexing seemed kind of slow compared to SyncThing last time I tried it.
ultramancool··on The End of Headphone Jacks, the Rise of DRM
It would be so easy to beat this though (if you want the analog hole route), ultimately that gets decoded and sent to the speakers in the headphones, rip the headphones apart.

Unless they start doing serious hardware anti-tamper in headphones I don't think it's a real risk.

ultramancool··on Courage
I can no longer charge my phone and listen to audio at the same time. Something I do at my desk every day.
ultramancool··on Courage
> More often than not the wired headphones become the hassle, whether it's tangled cords or just keeping them out of the way. I'm sure there are plenty of people who use wired headphones every day but there are also plenty of people who just have this unused hole in their phone

Nothing wrong with that - chances are you'll use it at one point or another. Most cars and stereo systems still use 3.5mm. Even for people who have Bluetooth in their cars they often prefer the stereo cable as it gives better quality, has no weird pairing issues and doesn't drain their battery.

I've ran both wireless and wired headphones and have settled on wired. It's just better, better audio quality, better headphones for a lower price, no waiting for the headphones to initialize, no forgetting to turn them off and finding your battery half dead, no having to charge them every few days. Just plug it in and go.

Hopefully this move will put pressure on manufacturers to get costs down on these wireless headphones and get the more off-brand audio manufacturers who often make the best products (quality/dollar wise) interested.

ultramancool··on Cheap MacBook chargers create big sparks
Happened to me in about 4 or 5 months. Ridiculously crappy, quicker than the ones Lenovo and Dell ship even. I expected better build quality from Apple but given the heat and noise issues I have I don't really think I've seen it. First time I've been an Apple customer and probably the last.
ultramancool··on Support for Hello discontinued in Firefox 49
Local IP will remain consistent across sessions and so can be used to identify you as certain device at a given public IP.
ultramancool··on Support for Hello discontinued in Firefox 49
PDF viewer is over the line too, Evince and Sumatra are so much faster and render nicer.
ultramancool··on Pirates Plunder 4K Hateful Eight, but Did They Crack DCP?
Yeah, but let's be honest, if I had a job as a manager at a theater and a moderate amount of reverse engineering skill or a small team of friends with those, well, time, access and tools combine quite well...

Sure, they make it look all secure, pass it through all that crypto and stuff but ultimately it has to be passed to the projector chip in some form which is unencumbered to be turned into light. At which point it's fairly trivial to dump. Anti-tampers on the case are probably fairly limited.

ultramancool··on Tor’s Branding Pivot Is Going to Get Someone Killed
This is why you should use Tor only with a series of VMs, one with internet and tor access to act as a router and the other which can only access the router vm. This lowers the attack surface to just that of Tor's proxy interface and your VM isolation. A physical implementation of this could be done for increased security.
ultramancool··on App Store Subscriptions
Let's compare with Google's:

1. Play Store

2. hamburger menu

3. Account

4. Subscriptions

Not a lot better, but at least makes more sense than "View Apple ID" I think.

ultramancool··on Brave Browser Adds Bitcoin Payments
As I said, certainly there are many websites which stand to profit from this who could contribute.

Of course, with something this small and basically one-off, given the number of open source devs building bitcoin projects I'd be surprised if no one's done something similar already.

ultramancool··on Brave Browser Adds Bitcoin Payments
If the system was designed right any infrastructure could be distributed (put a bitcoin address and a notification URL in your HTML or something dead simple like that) and development could be sponsored by interested parties if needed. There wouldn't be any need for a fee.
ultramancool··on New cloud attack takes full control of virtual machines with little effort
Yeah, I mean if it won't beat a CRC wouldn't ECC RAM be a reasonably easy solution to this and wouldn't most servers already be secured against it?
ultramancool··on Ask HN: Where do you go for civil discussion on the Internet?
http://notreddit.top

Not much political stuff on the past day right now but if you look at the past month's posts about the US presidential candidates you'll see what I'm talking about.

ultramancool··on Ask HN: Where do you go for civil discussion on the Internet?
There's a site that indexes reddit's most downvoted posts and quite often it's about 75% right-leaning political news being posted to major news and politics subreddits, if you visit those subreddits, the upvoted stuff is indeed stuff that's more left-leaning. Hard to see otherwise here, especially when you factor in the upvotes and not just # of comments.
ultramancool··on 43M passwords hacked in Last.fm breach
What on last.fm ever needs a secure password though? Maybe someone can listen to my premium radio if I paid for it, or scrobble as me, but I really don't care about either of those. As a user, a less secure password for sites that need less security just makes sense.
ultramancool··on Transmission BitTorrent Client OSX/Keydnap Malware Incident Q+A
You missed a key point:

> unless your terminal emulator filters out the bracketed paste characters when pasting!

Any sane terminal should already be doing that, if not there's not really any point in offering bracketed paste in the first place as any input could break out of it.

Of course, this should really be on the browser for not delivering the proper text that the user selected to the clipboard.

ultramancool··on Transmission BitTorrent Client OSX/Keydnap Malware Incident Q+A
Yeah, I keep stuff like that disabled for this reason, and because random sites like to add urls when you copy text.

Just set dom.event.clipboardevents.enabled = false.

Some shells also handle the paste and try to detect anything funny going on or at least let you review before you execute.

ultramancool··on Speech Is 3x Faster Than Typing for English and Mandarin on Mobile Devices
Unfortunately speech recognition often produces results so unusable that it might be harder to clean it up later as you wouldn't be able to tell what you were even trying to say.

... or, for the sake of argument, the same thing by speech recognition:

Unfortunately speech recognition often produces insulin usable and it might be hard to clean up later can be just you and me I want to tell what you're trying to say.

Maybe my voice sucks, or maybe I should robot it up more, but this is about the level I usually get... it's okay if you're doing a quick search on Google maps and don't mind repeating it 3 times but anything more than that and you may as well start typing.

ultramancool··on Pebble 4.0 Apps and Firmware Released
Yeah, I started looking around the market for smart watches recently and a Pebble seemed like the only realistic option. Does the notifications perfectly, uses an eink display so you get maxed out battery life and don't have to do obnoxious things like tap your watch to see the time and the price is very right. Look at the price on most Android Wear watches or an Apple Watch and Pebble seems like a steal, especially when they go on sale for $150 for a Pebble Time. Pretty happy with the purchase so far.
ultramancool··on Grateful Dead Fan Timothy Tyler Has Been Granted Clemency
Yeah, this is why acquiring the "taste" for a new alcohol often boils down to getting drunk on it a few times.

And annecdotally, most pot smokers didn't like the smell at first, but are now quite pleased by it.
