ulrischa··on Is HTML and Bootstrap and jQuery and PHP Websites Comparable to COBOL?
I found this and Websites with HTML + Bootstrap + jQuery + PHP websites are compared to COBOL. Is this a good comparision? And what do you think about the statement: Transform HTML + Bootstrap + jQuery + PHP websites into modern React, Next.js, or Astro applications? I think this is not a good replacement for MPA.
ulrischa··on So you want to parse a PDF?
Parsing a pdf is the most painful thing you can do
ulrischa··on PHP-ORT: Machine learning inference for the web
This is great. Very rudimentary in this state but the right direction. What php also needs is a good lib for NLP in different languages
ulrischa··on Astro is a return to the fundamentals of the web
The Island concept is really exactly what php is doing since decades
ulrischa··on Overthinking GIS (2024)
Nothing fancy new for a geographer. You do stuff like this in the first years in university
ulrischa··on The time is right for a DOM templating API
The answer is here on the HN Start-page: XSLT
ulrischa··on XSLT – Native, zero-config build system for the Web
Throw in php in the mix and you have a wonderful solution for templating with bullet proof standards:

// XML $xml_doc = new DOMDocument(); $xml_doc->load("file1.xml");

// XSL $xsl_doc = new DOMDocument(); $xsl_doc->load("file.xsl");

// Proc $proc = new XSLTProcessor(); $proc->importStylesheet($xsl_doc); $newdom = $proc->transformToDoc($xml_doc);

print $newdom->saveXML();

XSLT lacks functionality? No problem, use php functions in xslt: https://www.php.net/manual/en/xsltprocessor.registerphpfunct...

ulrischa··on Munich from a Hamburger's perspective
Servus from Munich: as you may know: Munich is now the most unfriedly city in the world. This comes from a Mix of the Grantler, Mia San Mia and Schickeria culture. The first is the traditional grumpy nature of the typical Bavarian (especially Oberbayern). Sone say this is because of the Föhn wind (warm, dry downdraft that occurs on the leeward side of alps mountains) which can cause headache and paired with a massive beer consume even more. Mia San Mia and Schickeria is only typical in Munich: Many people from all over Germany moved to Munich in the 60s and 70s and earned money and build up an extreme snob culture seeing theirself as better as the rural people in Bavaria. https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/2048237/incredible-euro...

ulrischa··on Ukraine can move beyond its Soviet architectural legacy

ulrischa··on Why some friendships end after kids come into the picture
The reason is: Kids are uncool. No one without Kids want to make compromises in their lifestlye, what is necessary if you have Kids. Having kids is not a popular life goal in our days. What popular tv show or movie in the last years have you seen with kids and families in it? Literally 0. This was not the case in the 80s.
ulrischa··on Minimum Viable Blog
It can be more simple: Just use php for SSR
ulrischa··on The language brain matters more for learning programming than the math brain
The best programmers were good in Latin at school
ulrischa··on Germany creates 'super–high-tech ministry' for research, technology, aerospace
This will not work. Germany is totally driven by lawyers. No room for new ideas. Everybody is doing ass covering instead of working together building something great
ulrischa··on The ADHD body double: A unique tool for getting things done
This is why childs in Germany get a Schulbegleiter. A person that just goes with the child to school
ulrischa··on Self-contained Python scripts with uv

ulrischa··on Knowing CSS is mastery to front end development
"Knowing" CSS in these days is nearly impossible. There are so many language features. Don't get me wrong: CSS today is cool and nearly anything is possible (can Doom run wirh CSS by the way?), but I work as frontend dev for years and I have not the feeling I really know CSS in depth

ulrischa··on Calendar.txt
A nice idea. But imagine you are a manger with a bunch of dates. This will not be very readable
ulrischa··on TypeScript types can run DOOM [video]
Typescript is for me one of the most overengineered programming languages. Why did JS not follow the way python and php did? Integrate types in the main language but make it optional.
