ulrich··on Five Pervasive Myths About Older Software Developers
The article is not very accurate. Age and experience don't necessarily correlate to each other. There are a lot of programmers in their mid-twenties with more than 10 years of experience. On the other hand a lot of the 40+ workers did work with only one kind of technology all the time. Or they have been promoted into management positions 10 years ago and know shit about whats going on today. Don't get me wrong, older developers with the same passion for computers as todays kids are extremely valuable. But they are also very rare.
ulrich··on Reddit: IAmA grad student who has tried nearly every "study"/"smart" drug
I am surprised by the amount of redditors that know all pros and cons of those drugs. The first time I even heard about it was when my sister started using ritalin. It helped her becoming a medium performer in school instead of beeing on the low end and also increased her social abilities.

What do you think is the percentage of academics using cognitive enhancers or similar stuff?

ulrich··on Why Subversion is better than Git
This is something I don't fully understand. How does it make merging more easy? I tried mercurial some time ago and it gave me conflicts for very easy merges. While I like it very much as a local version control for myself this merging was really bad. Now its not unlikely that I made a mistake somehow. But why should merging be more easy with git/Mercurial than with SVN?
ulrich··on Ask HN: Propaganda for creative salary manipulation?
It is the other way round, at least in Germany. During your interview you will always be asked how much you got at your last job. Then there is a magical cap at say 20% above the last salary (depends on how much they want you of course).

So it is very important to have a good salary at the beginning, because it will always be a reference point.

ulrich··on Why you love your job
True, money might not be the thing that makes you happy but it shows how your work is valued by the company.
