ulf-77723··on What would a serious AI product look like?
Agree with a lot of the points mentioned, especially the mental parts should be baked into those products
ulf-77723··on Founding a company in Germany: €9600, 152 days and I still can't send an invoice
Actually only half of the 25k is needed to start the GmbH
ulf-77723··on The Joy of Folding Bikes
There are also E-Bike Folding bikes, though the mentioned Brompton is very expensive when buying with a motor. A Carbon Folding Bike with motor under 15kg is really worth considering
ulf-77723··on AI-assisted cognition endangers human development?
I love this! Especially the part about greenland. For quite some time the dashes were a good indicator of a text was written by AI - but now the best option is to write more human like by doing it a little less polished but weird - at least the message is being transported
ulf-77723··on Eight years of wanting, three months of building with AI
Same for me. What I liked about the article was the emphasis on the mental model. Staying up late using the a lot machine is not helping me to remember the model better
ulf-77723··on Ghostty – Terminal Emulator
Why the hate against web developers?
ulf-77723··on FreeBSD doesn't have Wi-Fi driver for my old MacBook, so AI built one for me
Software is still eating the world, now even faster. I wonder how soon we will adapt to this new situation where software is vibe coded for anything and make use of this software without caution as expressed in the article.

For most people the main difference will be: Will it run and solve my problem? Soon we will see malware being put into vibe coded software - who will wants to check every commit for write-only software?

ulf-77723··on Maine’s ‘Lobster Lady’ who fished for nearly a century dies aged 105
The article states that a raising amount of people in the US still work, albeit their age and it feels a little strange to me. Ginny, probably got so old because she was working and had a purpose every day. Being 100 and still capable of working is a blessing
ulf-77723··on Dead Internet Theory
Trying to figure out if human or bot seems to be a fun game for a lot of people. I was being accused on Reddit for being a bot (of course I’m not) and English is not my mother tongue - yet people see what they want to see.

Maybe the future will be dystopian and talking to a bot to achieve a given task will be a skill? When we reach the point that people actually hate bots, maybe that will be a turning point?

ulf-77723··on We put Claude Code in Rollercoaster Tycoon
This is brilliant SEO work, I doubt that they loose money with it. With 40h and some additional for the landingpage it might be an expensive link bait, but definitely worth it. Kudos!

If not for SEO, it’s building quite a good reputation for this company, they got a lot of open positions.

I’m a big fan of transport tycoon, used to play it for hours as a kid and with Open Transport Tycoon it also might have been a good choice, but maybe not B2C?

ulf-77723··on Show HN: I made a down detector for down detector
Nice! Who doesn’t like a good recursion? Fingers crossed that the down detector for down detector won’t be down, when down detector might be down
ulf-77723··on [dead]
Is healthcare a business model or human right? How can AI be used in medical care?
ulf-77723··on Kohler launches smart toilet camera
With Withings there are also some french men trying to do the same for pee with U-Scan, there is even a subscription model tied to it
ulf-77723··on Kohler launches smart toilet camera
Shit just got real
ulf-77723··on Walmart Fires VP in Tech for Taking Daily Kickbacks Starting from $30K
Not knowing how the game works: What is legal in the US regarding kickbacks? Is it ok to get someone tickets for a gameday? To get invited to a party or taking a holiday? Pure cash seems a little odd to me - this must have been found in some company booking accounts, I guess
ulf-77723··on Electric bikes might just be the healthiest thing to ever happen to teenagers
I moved to the black forest, germany. Rather hilly - but you see as many e-bikes as bio-bikes when being in the woods. Teens use their bikes to drive to school and e-bikes are definitely slowly taking over. When kids live 20-30km away from school I can relate, but not for a short commute. On the other side, they want to use their e-bike as a sport utility in their free time, so they don’t have 2 separate bikes.
ulf-77723··on Sleep all comes down to the mitochondria
Would also be interested in a routine that makes sense.

People use habit stacking or habit chaining to get it into their routines - helps me tremendously to make new things a daily habit.

But this depends on how often red light therapy might be actually helpful.

ulf-77723··on Beetroot juice lowers blood pressure in older people by changing oral microbiome
Not sure, probably it doesn’t - in this regard the capsules might just be snake oil if they are not good in any other way
ulf-77723··on Beetroot juice lowers blood pressure by changing oral microbiome: study
Some time ago I read the book Complete Guide to Sports Nutrition by Anita Bean, which does also emphasize on not using antibacterial mouthwash since it removes the beneficial bacteria in the mouth which convert nitrate to nitrite.

I‘m drinking beetroot juice since 3 years now and asked myself if beetroot capsules might be an alternative.

ulf-77723··on Code and Trust: Vibrators to Pacemakers
Great article! I think it always depends which kind of code is being used in different industries. Anything related to your life will need to be guarded by humans. Critical infrastructure, medical devices.

If I think about anything which might not directly impact human life, AI Code is ok for me.

The point where the majority will start to trust the generated code like we trust our E-Mail Spam Filter it may be difficult. „The machine will probably do the right thing, no need to interact.“

ulf-77723··on I used o3 to profile myself from my saved Pocket links
Tell me what you read and I tell you who you are. Even though it might be surprising in which detail the model might give a feedback, it‘s not so hard to do this as a human, or is it?

From my perspective the most interesting thing might be the blind spots or unexpected results. The unknown knows which brings new aha effects

ulf-77723··on Biomolecular shifts occur in our 40s and 60s (2024)
When I look into my biohacker bubble, the answer might be: enough sleep, regular workout routine with HIIT, healthy whole foods, no alcohol, socializing
ulf-77723··on Cannabis scientists are trying to find a predictable, reliable product (2020)
Insects and Microorganisms are indeed wanted from my perspective - I grow in living soil and cherish any form of live. There are studies about certain fungi in the soil which lead to peach aroma and flowery terpenes. This plant is plenty of tastes: gasy and fruity, herbful. When you get a Banana Punch it feels like a fruit ensemble and the sweetest fruits just like grapes do need terroir
ulf-77723··on Writing Toy Software Is a Joy
While the list includes tools which are at the most basic level - how many actually have built their own editor? - I do agree with the author. It teaches you skills, which are great for any software project.

Every time I learn a new language or concept, I try to apply the principle of achieving a basic task with it.

When the meteor framework came out, I created a bullshit bingo in multiplayer mode. People could create their own bingo cards or use predefined bingo cards with business bullshit terms. Anybody worked in a big corp and had a boring meeting? The multiplayer bingo for the win ;) It was never made public, just a proof of work and to get a grasp on how to use the framework, but had a few chuckles

ulf-77723··on ChatGPT can accurately estimate Body Fat Percentage from photos
Dexa is expensive, you can get a modern smart scale for 50€, the cheapest accurate method would be the Caliper tongs.

What can it be good for? Video surveillance with metadata enrichment? Profiling? Losing body fat takes time. A smart mirror that displays body fat?

ulf-77723··on Australian who ordered radioactive materials walks away from court
Most interesting for Australia and generally society is the fact that a judge has to associate the behavior of collecting different materials from the periodic table with mental health issues in order to not ridicule the current laws.
ulf-77723··on Bad Smart Watch Authentication
What‘s wrong with Connect from your perspective? My only concern with it is that it’s slow
ulf-77723··on Thank HN: My bootstrapped startup got acquired today
Congrats!

What have been your highest highs and lowest lows during this journey?

When Google discontinued their A/B Testing tool - was it surprising for you?

How has the CRO landscape changed out of your perspective in the last 15 years? 1st party tracking, serverside testing, etc.

ulf-77723··on Five ways to reduce variance in A/B testing
Worked at an A/B Test SaaS company as a solutions engineer and to my knowledge every vendor is capable of delivering solutions for those problems.

Some advertise with those things, but the big ones take it for granted. Usually before a test will be developed the project manager will assist in mentioning critical questions about the test setup

ulf-77723··on Be a thermostat, not a thermometer (2023)
When I read the article, I assumed that it was written by a guy first - when I saved it to my favorites I noticed that Lara is a woman.

I do work most of my time in my home office, yet I do spend also some time in virtual meetings. The things Lara describes are even more important if you are not present in person, from my point of view. Harder to sense some of those feelings and emotions if you are not in the same room, but possible.
