Scaramouch, Scaramouch, will you do the Fandango

ulf-77723··on So you think you know box shadows?
Really great work, especially the music synced animation - could as well also be projected in an electro club

You mean a slower life is a longer life?
ulf-77723··on The first 10k games at bgammon.org, an open source online backgammon service
I love the game, created a german niche website about backgammon with steady traffic since years. Always happy to see new solutions.

How do you cover the server costs, without ads?

ulf-77723··on The danger of the mediocre success when testing startup hypotheses (2023)
I worked in a SaaS company selling an A/B Testing app where I saw a lot of tests and their outcomes from different clients.

Of course there are the low hanging fruits, which scored the clear success. Most of the tests although were not a clear success, but just a slightly better conversion rate.

Multiple tests applied after each other slowly increased the overall value. If taken the advice not to implement the changes of the small success, the overall amount would not have changed.

+1 for release. Strava Sync would be great - but keep it simple

ulf-77723··on I also hacked my car
Interesting read! I got a Toyota bus and the infotainment system sucks. As someone else wrote here, Bluetooth support is deadly slow and as soon as you stop the car the system will also shut down. It’s like someone created this system without considering real life scenarios, like being on a phone call, listening to a podcast or just listening to music.

But since you can also interact with the car, like turning on and off drive assistant systems, I would not dare to hack my car. How about insurance, when there is an accident?

ulf-77723··on Reverse-Engineering a Scoreboard Display
Not sure if there are a lot of different producers in europe, but I know that it’s not much easier to use the boards in german gyms. Have seen a couple of them so far. The interesting thing happening here is that the boards stay in place but they get new interfaces to use them with smartphone apps.
ulf-77723··on Satellites Are Becoming the New Cellphone Towers
Interesting Read! How will this change influence companies like American Tower? How fast will they need to adapt? 5 years, 10 years, 20 years?
ulf-77723··on I need to grow away from these roots
I was also fascinated by the idea and thought to myself to build something similar.

I already got LEDs, except the wire and tubes. My LEDs are already in tubes (one can choose on Aliexpress).

I would take an esp32 and run WLED on it. LedFX also works with it, to illuminate according to sound. Not that fancy like addressing each pixel with your own rules, but nice enough to watch it for a while.

Without the pi but with the esp32 it’s about 70€ for the parts.

Nice write up! Kudos to the author for being so humble about his journey - quite something achieved from my perspective.
ulf-77723··on Making my own bed sensor
Great project! Until now I do not have anything connected to my bed, I can't sleep with something attached to my wrist, so no sleep data. Tracking the sleep would be really great, but the current solutions seem not right to me.

I would welcome a system, which may be used as a pod sensor, like the mentioned EightSleep or Withings, both not visible. But I want to set when something is radioing around my bed. Just like on my smartphone, where the flight mode is activated, I would like to set the device so that the data is only synchronized via WLAN or Bluetooth when I am no longer lying in bed.

ulf-77723··on Fritzbox: AVM is threatened with a sales ban due to violations of Huawei patents
AVM recently announced that the business might be sold by the founders. This law suit somehow seems to me that the price for the company should be influenced artificially.

On the other hand China just saw protectionism by the US happening and now they are shifting gears. How long will it take until sanctions by the US will be useless?

ulf-77723··on BrainGPT turns thoughts into text
Exactly. Dangerous technology. Reminds me of dystopian sci-fi like inception or minority report.

First thing that came to my mind was an airport check. “Oh, you want to enter this country? Just use this device for a few minutes, please”

How about courts and testimony?

This tech will be used against you faster than you will recognize. Later on one will ask, why people let it happen.

Like the idea and approach of meetups.

I had a personal blog back in the days, started out with selfhtml and went from there. Somewhere on the journey WordPress came out and I transitioned to it. About 2 years ago I started a personal blog about rowing, since I bought a rowing machine. The blog is written in German, yet often people autotranslate it with Google to match their language, since rowing seems to be a worldwide niche topic. You may find it here: https://harder-better-faster-stronger.de
