uglygoblin··on The Animal Is Tired
I wish Robin Hobb all the years she desires and thank her deeply for gifting us with her stories so this animal could retreat to them when it needed a vacation from reality.
uglygoblin··on Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup
This is one of those games I play intensely for a few weeks every year before forcing myself to stop. It has so much depth and is so addicting. The spectator mode on the web version is fun and I learn a lot watching other players.
uglygoblin··on Your entitled behavior has no place in this project or its issue tracker
The title should be updated with the fact that this is from 2018.
uglygoblin··on Crazy New Ideas
You are making it all about money but things like reputation, legacy, and ego can easily be "skin in the game".
uglygoblin··on Please fix the AWS free tier before somebody gets hurt
AWS was charging me 0.50¢ a month for over a year for an account that was tied to a Google Suite email address for a failed startup I was part of.

I couldn't recover access to the account. They couldn't figure how to give me access. They wouldn't just remove my credit card from the account.

One month the charge became $10 so I called my bank and had them block AWS charges. It seemed the only way to deal with the fear that someday that would creep up and up.

uglygoblin··on List of apps people pay for but have low rating
Robots.txt can accomplish the same thing which means they periodically grab a single text file from you.
uglygoblin··on Avoiding Leetcode Anxiety
"I still understand how it works" is memory. Maybe you have an amazing memory but imagine 15 years later.
uglygoblin··on Poll: Which homepage should the logo on the blog lead to?
This is a small pet peeve of mine. I believe if your core business is not the content of your blog you should make it very easy to get back to your main product dashboard/homepage.
uglygoblin··on “They introduce kernel bugs on purpose”
If the researchers desired outcome is more vigilance during patches and contributions I guess they might achieve that outcome?
uglygoblin··on Italian ‘king of absentees’ allegedly skipped work for 15 years
Maybe he was very productive in other endeavors, personally or societally and it was a net gain :) or maybe hundreds of patients over 15 years had undesirable results at the hospital that would of been better had his salary gone to somebody who showed up?

UBI sounds pretty good in these situations.

uglygoblin··on You Are Not ‘Behind’ (2016)
You've put into words what I haven't been able to, thanks for this take. I totally agree we are generally just dealing with another flavor of the same behavior.
uglygoblin··on Terraform 0.15 General Availability
I started using Terraform on our project in early 2019 which was version 0.11.13. The upgrade to 0.12.x seemed non-trivial so I put it off... now 2 years later and we're at 0.15.x.

Looks like I need to clear my schedule in a upcoming sprint to get this done so the pain doesn't get even worse :)

uglygoblin··on 1980: MUD
My first experience with an online service was Prodigy sometime around 1995 or 1996 and one of the first things I stumbled across was the MUD Gemstone 3.

It blew my mind that hundreds of people were all existing in a shared world. I directly attribute my love of computers and software development career to MUD's.

Also, Gemstone is still running: https://www.play.net/gs4/

uglygoblin··on Highest rates of teen bullying are between friends and friends-of-friends: study
I had similar experiences in high school where I was bullied constantly but the only way I knew to deal with it was by fighting back aggressively (verbally and physically). It sometimes stopped them from bullying me more directly but usually ended with me getting in trouble and being labeled crazy.

This led to counselors and people telling me I had anger/emotional issues and I should just ignore the bullies. There's wisdom in ignoring haters and self-coping mechanisms but as a teenager in a forced social system it's not a great answer. This was the 90's.

I hope society/adults have better responses now but I doubt it.

uglygoblin··on How to Write Readable Code
I've had the exact same experience.
uglygoblin··on William Blake's Four-Fold Imagination (2020)
One of my favorite concept albums is Ulver's "Themes from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell": https://youtu.be/PlrW9SUCINo
uglygoblin··on The Serverless Revolution Has Stalled
This is precisely what I do when I write code destined to be an AWS Lambda Function. It really feels like the only sane way to do it. It also makes it easy to mock the incoming request/event for integration tests.
uglygoblin··on DikuMUD 3 Is Released
Ditto! Digging through Diku and the derivative Smaug codebase was my gateway to programming and I am forever thankful that such software existed and was available for a young teenager to dive into.
uglygoblin··on The world needs more search engines
I'm all for more search engines but I'm not a fan of the brand name Cliqz. I instantly think of the bogus/low quality search results on a parked webpage.
uglygoblin··on The Horror of Microsoft Teams
I'm not necessarily a fan of Teams but there's an unofficial Linux client that I use almost daily. It has some issues but mostly works.

uglygoblin··on Dwarf Fortress is coming to Steam with graphics
Another Roguelike game called ADOM that has been around since the 90's was brought to Steam with upgraded assets and sounds a couple years back.
