uggedal··on Critical crypto bug leaves Linux, hundreds of apps open to eavesdropping
How many of its programs link to gnutls though? And if I'm not misunderstandig only client software is vulnerable to the cited attack.
uggedal··on Broken by design: systemd
> You must also reboot to upgrade sysvinit.

The whole point of the article is that you don't need to upgrade sysvinit or another minimal /sbin/init like those found in the BSDs.

uggedal··on The best todo list app for any developer
No, it will not.
uggedal··on The descent to C
It's far from obselete: http://sta.li/faq
uggedal··on Netflix uses FreeBSD 9.0
Yes, it's restored: http://www.freebsd.org/news/2012-compromise.html
uggedal··on Moving from Ubuntu to Debian
The problem with Debian Testing is the relatively long freeze periods before a release. Wheezy was frozen for over 10 months.
uggedal··on Shell Scripts vs. Ansible
I use Ansible to manage my laptop: https://github.com/uggedal/playbooks/
uggedal··on 177 Days of GitHub
I'm currently on day 211 mysef[1]. About 50 of those days were contributions made from my Nexus 4 (Connectbot, tmux, vim) while traveling without a laptop.

uggedal··on The $80 web development workstation
Switching to the proprietary Broadcom driver fixed all connection issues for me: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/broadcom-wl-dkms/
uggedal··on Salt: Like Puppet, Except It Doesn’t Suck
I used Puppet for a few years (and created a few modules for it https://github.com/puppetmodules). I switched to Salt a year ago. My main motivation were its simplicity (YAML+jinja), lower memory consumption, easier source code both to read and contribute to, and its support for both push and pull based architectures.

If you want to get a feel for how salt looks like when managing some servers and laptops you can take a look at my states: https://github.com/uggedal/states

uggedal··on Learn C
I "learned" C by writing a smal runit/daemontools replacement. Most of the work was learning the features I needed from libc: http://uggedal.github.io/going/going.c.html
uggedal··on Why I left Heroku, and notes on my new AWS setup
My salt states are public[1] and include among other things setup for nginx/redis/postgresql/uwsgi which powers a few Django and Flask sites.

uggedal··on Introducing the Europe Region, Now Available in Public Beta
Just 4.5 years after EC2 was available in Ireland...: http://aws.amazon.com/releasenotes/DevPay/1924
uggedal··on Github turns five
A contribution to https://github.com/defunkt/mofo got me #71 on January 27, 2008 (https://api.github.com/users/uggedal).
uggedal··on Why Use Nginx?
"mpm-itk allows you to run each of your vhost under a separate uid and gid—in short, the scripts and configuration files for one vhost no longer have to be readable for all the other vhosts"

uggedal··on Poll: Best RSS reader
I migrated to https://feedhq.org - its highly readable on both desktop and mobile and its open source: https://github.com/feedhq/feedhq
uggedal··on Puppet or Chef?
I migrated all my machines to salt 6 months ago after using Puppet for a few years. It's been pretty painless but I would check out Ansible also before commmiting to a Salt transition.
uggedal··on Puppet or Chef?
Salt can be used both in a pull or push fashion.
uggedal··on Vim as you IDE
Sounds similar to my setup: Arch Linux, monsterwm, dwb, urxvt, zsh, tmux, vim. All managed with salt[1] and keeping dotfiles in git[2].

uggedal··on Fish: Finally, a command line shell for the 90s
zsh has a plugin for fish-style syntax highlighting: https://github.com/zsh-users/zsh-syntax-highlighting
uggedal··on Batsd: 37 Signals' Ruby Statsd implementation persisting to Redis
Those interested in lower memory consumption and efficiency should take a look at https://github.com/armon/statsite another statsd "clone". Originally a Python implementation statsite is now rewritten in C.
uggedal··on My first C program: simple process supervisor like daemontools/runit in 359 LoC
That was embarrasing. Should be fixed now: https://github.com/uggedal/going/commit/15a83397076ffbebe585...
uggedal··on Wil Wheaton: Yo Hollywood, Let Me Download Ubuntu
Woulden't bittorrent be beneficial in NZ for popular torrents since not everybody needs to download the entire content through the Southern Cross Cable but instead could download some from local NZ peers?
uggedal··on Dotfiles.github.com - A guide to dotfiles on GitHub
I just track ~/ directly and add appropriate .gitignore entries to those files which are ephemeral or not part of my local configuration:

https://github.com/uggedal/dotfiles/blob/master/.gitignore

uggedal··on Web Analytics Illegal in UK after 26 May? Crazy
You can get user-based statistics without cookies with:

    (new Image()).src="http://your.tld/track.png?ua=" + encodeURIComponent(navigator.userAgent);
and then parse your logs.

Update: this is just an example, as ars notes the user agent is sent as a HTTP header. But screen resolution etc is not.

uggedal··on Exploit Linux Machines Through Fun Challenges
Linux 2.6.12 an up implements address space randomization (randomly varies the location of the stack over a 8MB range) which could explain what you're seeing.
uggedal··on How Not To Sort By Average Rating
I implemented this algorithm by using likes/views in stead of positive/negative votes on http://mediaqueri.es/popular/ and have been quite happy with the results.
uggedal··on Poll: What's Your Favorite Programming Language?
The only modern and novel alternative is http://saltstack.org
uggedal··on How Reddit ranking algorithms work
For reference, the mathematical notation of the hot algorithm is from my master thesis[1].
